Abstract
A pressure fluid cylinder housing 1 for the hydraulic actuation of a vehicle clutch or brake is attached to a splashboard wall 4 serving as a mounting plate by a bayonet-type fastening. An aperture 6 in the splashboard 4 has regular cut-outs 16 into which socket-forming projections on a flange 17 of the housing locate. As the housing is partly rotated bayonet regions at the margins of the cut-outs enter the sockets. Resilient hook shaped holding elements 8 extending from the flange press against the splashboard on the opposite side to the socket-forming projection to exert a first holding force on part rotation of the housing onto the splashboard. A second holding force is superimposed on this first holding force by an annular elastomeric resilient biasing member 9 between the flange 17 and the splashboard 4. Thus the housing can be mounted and dismounted without tools, and forces in either axial direction can be exerted on the cylinder.
Description

PRE:SSU E FLUID CYLINDER AND ITS 'JEANS FOR FASTENING IN A VElIICLE The invention relates in general to a pressure fluid cylinder housing for the hydraulic actuation of a clutch or a brake of a vehicle and more particularly to a fastening arrangement or means for securing the housing. The cylinder housing contains a piston which can be actuated by a plunger. The fastening means enables the housing to be fastened to a splashboard of the vehicle or to a corresponding preassembly module allowing the housing to be mounted and dismounted substantially without tools. A quick acting device known from the German Patent Application DE 197 10 631.5 serves for assembling a pressure fluid cylinder on a housing wall. This fastening device enables the cylinder to be assembled on the housing wall without the aid of tools.
The fastening device primarily consists of a fastening nose and catch spring with a catch nose and a stop shoulder. At least one aperture in the housing wall has contours into which the fastening nose and the catch springs with the catch nose can be inserted. One advantage of this quick acting closure is in the simple sealability of the spaces on either side of the housing wall. The simple assembly by inserting the pressure fluid cylinder in the axial direction and optionally partly rotating the cylinder into the assembly position and the securing of the quick acting closure by supporting the catch springs by suitable securing means is generally quite advantageous.
A pressure fluid cylinder fastener is also known from US patent 4,488,701. The cylinder is here fastened to a splashboard of a vehicle by a simple pushing and turning operation. For this purpose the splashboard is provided with a through-aperture
through which the pressure means cylinder can be inserted until a flange around a cylinder strikes against the splashboard. The through-aperture has four bayonet cut-outs in symmetrical arrangement, through which bayonet sockets suitably arranged on the external diameter of the pressure means cylinder can be pushed, these bayonet sockets also being arranged symmetrically peripherally and at a specific distance in front of the flange.
Before assembly of the cylinder a seal made of elastomer is pulled on up to just before the flange, in other words to a point between the flange and the bayonet sockets. The thickness of the seal reduces as the bayonet fixing is established and a holding force is produced for fastening the pressure means cylinder. When a pedal is actuated the force is diverted to a plunger of the pressure fluid cylinder and from there via the bayonet socket to the splashboard. The seal is therefore not affected by the actuating force.
A hydraulic facility with a spring element as energy store for introducing and recovering energy during actuation of the pressure means cylinder by the pedal is characterized by high forces on the plunger to move a piston in the cylinder housing, to initiate the hydraulic operation of the clutch via a disengaging mechanism. The force may not always extend in the direction of the movement of the pedal but also counter thereto.
A reversal of force direction of this type takes place in particular when the spring element of the energy store as a top dead centre spring has passed its dead centre and transmits its energy back into the movement of the pedal. It has been found that it is not sufficient to intercept forces acting in the direction from the pedal to the plunger via the bayonet socket on the splashboard, but to also divert tensile forces on the plunger as pressure forces onto the splashboard by suitable
measures at the side of the splashboard remote from the bayonet sockets. It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an improved fastening arrangement for mounting a pressure fluid cylinder housing in such a way that it is possible in the event of a reversal of the force direction owing to the use of top dead centre springs acting as energy stores to ensure a stable securement of the housing.
According to the invention there is provided a fastening arrangement for detachably securing a pressure fluid cylinder housing to a mounting plate; the arrangement comprising an aperture with cut-outs in the mounting plate, a flange on the housing, said flange having at least one projection forming a bayonet socket of a bayonet fitting for receiving a complementary bayonet region of the mounting plate at a margin of one of the cut-outs as the housing is located in the aperture and partly rotated and at least one hook-like holding element on the flange which engages on the mounting plate to co-operate with the bayonet fitting.
The arrangement of the peripheral flange on the cylinder housing in the plane of the bayonet fixing and on which the holding element or elements are arranged, is helpful. The holding elements, owing to their hook-like formation and their limited width, have an inherent elasticity and in the installed state of the cylinder housing produce a specific first holding force to fasten the housing to the mounting plate or splashboard in cooperation with the bayonet sockets. The holding elements are best arranged on the side of the splashboard remote from the plunger.
As it could be necessary for the pressure fluid cylinder housing under discussion to be used in vehicles with low actuating forces of the pedal on the plunger and vice versa, and also in vehicles with high actuating forces of the pedal on the plunger and vice versa, it is expedient to arrange a biasing member which is annular in design and substantially has the shape of the flange between the flange with the holding elements and the splashboard. This biasing element may consist of an elastic material with spring properties, for example of elastomer, and in the installed state is fixed with biasing between the flange and the splashboard once the bayonet fixing has been established and latched. In this manner a second additional holding force is superimposed on the first holding force created by the holding elements so a permanent fit of the cylinder housing is ensured even in the event of a force reversal.
In certain cases, for example in high ambient temperatures, it has proved advantageous to design the biasing member as an ondular washer to assist the first holding force of the counter-
holding elements by the second holding force which remains constant over the entire service life.
The invention may be understood more readily, and various other aspects and features of the invention may become apparent, from consideration of the following description.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a part-sectional plan view of a pressure cylinder housing fastened to a splashboard of a vehicle with a fastening arrangement constructed in accordance with the invention and Figure 2 is a perspective view of the housing, the splashboard and the fastening arrangement shown in Figure 1.
As shown in the drawings, a hydraulic pressure fluid facility for actuating a clutch of a vehicle is composed of a pressure cylinder housing 1 containing a piston 2 (not directly shown) and a plunger 3 for the actuation thereof. The plunger 3 can be mechanically actuated with the aid of a foot pedal in the vehicle, so forces are transmitted to the cylinder housing 1 and these are diverted to a mounting plate in the form of a splashboard 4 or an equivalent component of a preassembled module when the housing 1 is installed.
A bayonet-type fastening arrangement is provided to fix the housing 1 detachably to the splashboard 4. The fastening arrangement comprises an aperture 16 in the splashboard 4 with a number of bayonet cut-outs 16 symmetrically spaced around the aperture 6. The cylinder housing 1 is provided with a flange 17 having several lug-like projections defining bayonet sockets 5 with lead-in guide bevels 7. As is known, these projections can be introduced through the cut-outs 16 and the housing 1 partly rotated to bring regions of the splashboard 4 at the margins of the cut-outs 16 into the sockets. The flange 17 is also equipped with one or more hook-like holding elements 8 which engage on the opposite side of the splashboard 4 when the housing 1 is latched to mate the bayonet fixings 5, 6.
Preferably the elements 8 are resilient and they are also shaped
to accommodate a supplementary annular biasing member 9 which locates between the flange 17 and the splashboard 4.
The biasing member 9 is preferably a resilient material such as for example of elastomer.
The holding elements 8 provide a primary resilient holding force. The advantage of using the biasing member 9 is that a second holding force is superimposed on a first holding force created by the holding elements 8 and a permanent yet detachable fixing of the housing 1 is ensured even in the event of a reversal of the forces acting on the housing 1.
