Abstract

A shelf support for attaching a shelf to a wall of a display stand is provided by a joining system. The joining system comprises a first joining element 10 for attachment to a shelf and a second joining element 20 attached to a wall and comprising a housing 23 with an opening; such that in use a part of the first joining element enters the housing and has at least one formation 17, 18 which forms an interlocking arrangement with complementary formations29, 30 on the second joining element. The first element preferably has two formations in the form of spigots which engage in complementary key-hole shaped slots in the second joining member. Both joining members may preferably made by plastics moulding from polypropylene. The display stand wall may optionally be made from cardboard sheets glued together and formed with slots into which the second joining member may be fitted and the shelf may be made by gluing folded card around a flat plate portion 11 of the first joining element.

Description

POINT OF SALE DISPLAYS Field of the Invention This invention relates to point of sale displays such as are used, for example, in supermarkets for displaying items of confectionery and other products.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved jointing system for connection of a shelf to a side wall of a display point of sale or like display unit.
Summary of the Invention According to the present invention there is provided a jointing system for connection of a shelf to a side wall of a display unit, said jointing system comprising :-
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
a) a first jointing element attached (or for attachment) to a shelf, and b) a second jointing element attached (or for attachment) to a side wall, and in which the second jointing element includes a housing which, in use, projects inwardly of the side wall and has an opening which, in use, faces forwardly, and the first jointing element has a part which, in use, enters the opening of the housing and has at least one formation which has interlocking engagement with a complementary formation of the second jointing element.
The first jointing element preferably has two formations, in the form of spigots, which engage in key-hole shaped slots in a wall of the second jointing element.
The invention also provides an improved method of assembling a point of sale display which includes the use of a jointing system as described above.
Brief Description of the Drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shelf support, Figure 2 is a side view of the shelf support, Figure 3 is a plan view of the shelf support,
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Figure 4 is a front view of the shelf support, Figure 5 is a perspective view of a shelf support unit from one side, Figure 6 is a perspective view of the shelf support unit from the other side, Figure 7 is a sectional view of the shelf support unit, Figure 8 is a view of the shelf support unit in the direction of the arrow A of Figure 7, and Figure 9 is a view of the shelf support unit in the direction of the arrow B of Figure 7.
Description of the Preferred Embodiment The shelf support 10 shown in Figures 1 to 4 is formed as a plastics moulding, typically of polypropylene, and includes a square, flat plate portion 11 and an elongated box section 12 comprising a pair of parallel main walls 13 and 14 and end walls 15 and 16. The walls 13 to 16 extend at right angles to the plane of the flat'plate portion 11 and a pair of spigots 17 and 18 project from main wall 13. The flat plate portion 11 is formed with spaced apertures 19.
The flat plate portion 10 is also provided with a pair of spaced pegs (not shown).
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
in use, a shelf of a point of display unit is formed from folded card and, at each end of the shelf, a shelf support 10 is glued in position with the flat plate portion 11 between two vertical layers of the card so that the glue used to fix the flat plate portion 11 in position passes through the spaced apertures 19 to improve the effectiveness of the bonding process. The pair of spaced pegs (not shown) located in holes made by punches incorporated in the die cutting tool for the card so that accurate positioning of the flat plate portion 11 is effected without any requirement for jigging in the assembly process, thereby achieving a substantial reduction of the assembly time. The elongated box section 11 faces rearwardly of the shelf with the axis of elongation of the box section 11 vertical.
The shelf of the display unit thus has rearwardly facing box sections 11 at each end thereof.
Turning next to Figures 5 to 9, these show a shelf support unit 20 which is formed as a plastics moulding, typically of polypropylene. It comprises a pair of co-planar flanges 21 and 22 extending outwardly from a box-shaped housing 23 which has a first opening afforded by the space between the two co-planar flanges 21 and 22. The housing 23 has two end walls 24 and 25, a first side wall 26, a second side wall 27, and a main wall 28. The first side wall 26 is a solid wall and extends for the distance from the plane of flanges 21 and 22 to the main wall 28 (as can be seen from Figure 5). The second side wall 27, on the other hand, extends for only part of the distance from the plane of flanges 21 and 22 to the main wall 28 (as can be seen from Figure 6) to provide a second opening 29 leading into the interior of the housing 23. The
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
main wall 28 is formed with a pair of key-hole shaped slots 30 and 31.
The point of sale display unit has side walls made from cardboard sheets glued together and formed with vertically extending slots at the positions at which the shelves are intended to be fitted. A pair of shelf support units 20 are provided for supporting the front of each shelf and each shelf support unit 20 is fitted in its respective slot (after assembly of the display unit apart from fitting of the shelves). Each shelf support unit 20 is slid into position so that the axis of elongation of the box-section housing 23 is vertical and the second opening 29 of each housing is facing forwardly.
To fix a shelf in position, all that is then necessary is to position the shelf at the appropriate level, with the box sections 12 of the shelf supports 10 in alignment with the second openings 29 of the housings 23, and to move the ends of the shelf rearwardly so that the box sections 12 enter the openings 29 and the spigots 17 and 18 on the first walls 13 of the shelf supports 10 enter the keyhole shaped slots 30 and 31 of the main walls 28. Resilient deformation of the plastics material is effected as the box sections 12 are pressed fully into positions and the spigots 17 and 18 enter the key-hole shaped slots 30 and 31.
The shelf supports 10 and the shelf support units 20 constitute jointing elements which are so designed as to be
compatible with the automatic line gluing machinery used to I produce the point of sale display units. Thus the shelf support units
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
20 are fitted after the automatic gluing operation and flange sizes are minimised to give maximum strength for the completed display unit.
The shelf to which the shelf supports 10 are attached has a flush front face allow complete (or substantially complete) coverage of the jointing elements in the completed display unit, thereby enhancing the appearance of the finished display unit.
Assembly of the jointing elements is effected from the front of the display unit enabling the easy utilisation of the slots in the side walls of the display unit and considerably increasing the loadcarrying ability of the shelves.
