Abstract
Display apparatus for an image comprises a magnetically receptive metal base member (1) providing a support surface for a plurality of display panels (2). A plurality of locating elements (4, 8) provided on the support surface of the base member act to divide the support surface into a plurality of identical polygonal zones (6) and each display panel is adapted to cover one of the polygonal zones and to be located in place by one or more of the locating elements. Each display panel has an image-bearing upper surface and the edges of the display panels abut one another to provide a continuous display surface. A magnetic strip is provided on each display panel (2) for holding the panel against the base member (1). The locating elements 4 may be circular studs raised from the base member 1, engaging with recesses in the display panels 2. The base member 1 may be rectangular, and the polygonal zones 6 square. Flanges 8 around the edge of base member 1 may form locating elements 4.
Description
DISPLAY APPARATUS The invention relates to display apparatus which can be mounted in a generally vertical plane for the display of an image such as an advertising image.
The invention provides display apparatus comprising: a magnetically receptive metal base member providing a support surface for a plurality of display panels; a plurality of locating elements provided on the support surface of the base member acting to divide the support surface into a plurality of identical polygonal zones; a plurality of identical display panels each adapted to lie on the support surface of the base member to cover one of the polygonal zones and to be located in place by one or more of the locating elements; each display panel having a plain image-bearing upper surface and the edges of the display panels abutting one another to provide a continuous display surface; and magnetic means provided on each display panel for holding the panel against the base member.
Embodiments of the invention are described below, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure I is a front view of the base member of the display apparatus;
Figure 2 is a rear view of a display panel;
Figure 3 is an enlarged view of the display apparatus showing a locating element and the comers of three display panels; and
Figure 4 is a cross-section through part of the display apparatus.
The display apparatus described below is intended to be mounted in a generally vertical plane for the display of an image such as an advertising image.
The apparatus consists of a base member I and a plurality of display panels 2. The base member 1 is made of a magnetically receptive metal such as steel and provides a flat support surface 3 for the display panels. A plurality of locating elements in the form of circular studs 4 are provided on the flat surface of the base member and act to divide the flat surface into a plurality of identical polygonal zones. In the case shown, the base member is rectangular and is divided into nine identical square zones 6.
The display panels 2 correspond in shape and size to the zones 6 and are each adapted to lie on the flat surface 3 to cover one of zones 6. The panels 2 are formed with a quarter-circular recess 7 in their rear surfaces at each comer. The recesses are shaped and sized to accommodate the studs so that the studs locate the panels on the base member. In the embodiment shown, further locating elements are provided by upstanding flanges 8 extending at least partly along each of the four outer edges of the base member. In another embodiment (not shown) the flanges 8 are omitted and additional semi-circular studs on the edges of the base member at the points where two display panels meet. Additional studs can also be provided at points midway between the comers of the display panels and the panel shown in Figure 2 is provided with additional recesses 10 to accommodate such additional studs. The panels are made of relatively lightweight material such as Foamex.
The upper surfaces of the panels 2 provide plain image-bearing surfaces and the edges of the panels abut one another to provide a continuous display surface.
With reference to Figure 4, it can be seen that the thickness of the panels 2 and the depth of the recesses 7 are such that the rear surfaces of the panels are spaced from the flat support surface 3 of the base member. This serves two purposes. Firstly, it provides a space for magnetic means such as a flat magnetic strip 11 which is attached to the back of each panel. The magnetic strips 11 service to hold the panels against the base member; secondly, it provides a space for the heads of fixing screws 12 which pass through holes 14 in the base member and service to mount it to a vertical surface (not shown).
Claims (6)
- CLAIMS 1. Display apparatus comprising: a magnetically receptive metal base member providing a support surface for a plurality of display panels; a plurality of locating elements provided on the support surface of the base member acting to divide the support surface into a plurality of identical polygonal zones; a plurality of identical display panels each adapted to lie on the support surface of the base member to cover one of the polygonal zones and to be located in place by one or more of the locating elements; each display panel having a plain image-bearing upper surface and the edges of the display panels abutting one another to provide a continuous display surface ; and magnetic means provided on each display panel for holding the panel against the base member.
- 2. A display apparatus according to Claim 1, wherein at least some of the locating elements are in the form of studs raised up on the flat surface of the base member and wherein the lower surfaces of the display panels are formed with recesses shaped and sized to accommodate the studs.
- 3. A display apparatus according to Claim 2, wherein the studs are circular.
- 4. A display apparatus according to any preceding claim, wherein the base member isrectangular and the locating elements act to divide the flat surface into a plurality of identical square zones.
- 5. A display apparatus according to Claim 4, wherein the locating elements include upstanding flanges extending at least partly along each edge of the base member.
- 6. Display apparatus substantially as described herein, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
