Abstract

A filter suitable for application to an electric cable 1 comprises at least one magnetic material element 3 arranged to magnetically couple with signals travelling in the cable 1 such that it induces a series impedance to said signals and at least one electrically conductive element 4 arranged to electrostatically couple with signals in the cable 1 such that an impedance is formed between the signals and earth. The conductive element 4 may be a tape, mesh or conductively coated fabric wound round a split clamp-on ferrite core 3. Alternatively the conductive element may be separate from the magnetic element and pressed into close proximity with the cable 1 by spring means, plastic foam and /or clamped by a metal trough and lid arrangement. The magnetic element 3 may include a winding linked to an electrical impedance arrangement. The filter provides a wide-band radio-frequency attenuation in cables without cutting or gaining access to the cable ends.
