Abstract

The air freshener plugs into a motor vehicle cigarette lighter via plug section 5 of holder 1. Holder 1 holds a block 2 of deodorising or scented material adjacent to heating element 4. Material evaporated from the block is emitted through vents 3, which may be adjustable in size using vented slide 9. A fuse 8 may be provided. When exhausted the air freshening material 2 is replaced by a fresh refill. An on/off indicator in the form of a LED indicator may be provided.

Description

2352973 AIR FRESHENER UNIT This invention relates to air freshener units
and in particular to air freshener units suitable for use in motor vehicles.
It is known to provide an air freshener for a motor vehicle which comprises a block of fragrance containing material which is adhered to a 5 piece of card.
Typically, the card is suspended from a windscreen mirror and the fragrance evaporates over the course of time to freshen air within the vehicle.
Such devices suffer from a number of disadvantages. They are only able to discharge fragrance at a very slow rate so that they may have a reasonably long life. They require air to be able to circulate around them in order to carry off any fragrance they discharge and this means that the devices must be hung up.
This presents an appearance which is not appreciated by many people.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an air freshener unit for a motor vehicle in which these disadvantages are alleviated.
According to the present invention, there is provided an air freshener unit comprising a vented holder for a piece of material consisting of, containing, or impregnated with a volatile deodorising or scented material, and which comprises a heating element and a plug portion adapted for insertion into a cigarette lighter socket of a motor vehicle for energising said heating element.
2 Such a unit can sit neatly in the vehicle at the cigarette lighter socket, which is usually provided low down within the vehicle cabin. A temporary high rate of discharge of fragrance or deodoriser can be achieved by powering the heating element.
In preferred embodiments of the invention a fuse is provided protecting the heating element.
Preferably the vents of said holder are adjustable in size and/or closable. This enables a further control of the rate of discharge of the volatile material from the air freshener unit.
The unit preferably includes an on/off indicator which may for example take the form of an LED indicator which is illuminated when the device is energised.
The unit is preferably supplied with at least one block of air freshening material, and replacement or re-fill blocks of air freshener may be 15 supplied separately.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a partial section through an air freshener unit, and Figure 2 is a perspective view of such a unit.
In the drawings, the air freshener unit comprises a bolder 1 containing a block 2 of deodorising or scented material. The holder 1 has vents 3 formed in an upper surface whereby material evaporating from the block 2 can escape to atmosphere and beneath that block 2 there is a heating element 4.
3 A lower portion 5 of the holder is constituted as a plug which is adapted for insertion into a cigarette lighter socket of a motor vehicle.
Contacts 6,7 are provided for energising the heating element 4 and current to the heating element passes via a fuse 8. Contact 7 is constituted as a 5 spring which retains the plug 5 in the lighter socket.
In order to control the rate at which material can evaporate from the deodorising block 2 a vented slide 9 is provided within the holder 1. This slide 9 contains vents 10 which can be bought into register with the vents 3 in the holder or in to register with gaps between the vents 3 in the holder or to any intermediary position. In this way the vents 3 may be fully open, fully closed, or partly open.
The holder is suitably moulded from plastics material. It may be formed in as many discrete parts as are convenient, and these may be bonded together as desired, for example by welding.

Claims (7)

  1. An air freshener unit comprising a vented holder for a piece of material consisting of, containing, or impregnated with a volatile deodorising or scented material, and which comprises a heating element and a plug portion adapted for insertion into a cigarette lighter socket of a motor vehicle for energising said heating element.
  2. 2. An air freshener unit according to claim 1, wherein a fuse is provided protecting the heating element.
  3. 3. An air freshener unit according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the vents 10 of said holder are adjustable in size and/or closable.
  4. 4. An air freshener unit according to any preceding claim, wherein the unit includes an on/off indicator.
  5. 5. An air freshener unit according to claim 4, wherein the on/off indicator takes the form of an LED indicator which is illuminated when 15 the device is energised
  6. 6. An air freshener unit according to any preceding claim, wherein the unit is supplied with at least one block of air freshening material.
  7. 7. An air freshener unit according to any preceding claim, and substantially as herein described.
