Abstract

A device for facilitating the hanging of a picture in a pre-determined position comprises an elongate strip of a stiff, but elastic material 1, a handle 2, a hook 3 adapted to receive a picture suspension wire or cord and a hardened point 4 projecting from the strip opposite the said hook. In use, a picture is hung on the hook and held against the wall in a desired position by means of the handle. A downward force is then applied to the handle, causing the point to mark the wall in the correct position for the subsequent application of a picture hook.

Description

1 2351660 PICTURE HANGING AID The present invention relates to a device

for facilitating the hanging of pictures on walls.

Great difficulty can be experienced when seeking to hang pictures on walls, either singly or in groups. This is because the length of wire or string upon which a picture is hung is purely a matter of convenience to the picture framer or whoever else attached the suspension wire or cord to the back of the picture. The situation is made worse because of the present practice of having picture suspension wires or cords of lengths such that they are not visible when the pictures are in place.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a device for facilitating the hanging of a picture in a pre-determined position.

According to the present invention, there is provided a device for facilitating the hanging of a picture in a pre-determined position, comprising an elongated strip of a stiff, but elastic material, a handle at one end of the strip of material projecting in a plane orthogonal to the surface of the strip of material and at the other end of the strip of material and on the same side as the handle, a hook adapted to receive a picture suspension wire or cord and a hardened point projecting from the strip of material approximately opposite the said hook.

A suitable material for use in practising the invention is carbon steel.

2 The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a side view of an embodiment of the invention.

Referring to the drawing, a picture hanging aid consists of a strip 1 of stiff, but elastic material such as carbon steel, approximately an inch wide and an eighth of an inch thick which has a handle 2 projecting from one end thereof in a downward direction. At the other end of the strip 1 of material, there is a hook 3 on the same side of the strip of material 1 as the handle 2.

On the other side of the strip 1 of material, approximately opposite the hook 3 there is a hardened steel point 4.

In use, a picture hanging aid as described above of a length such that the handle 2 is above the top of a picture to be hung is chosen, and the picture is is hung upon the hook 3. The picture and hanging aid are then manoeuvred until a desired position for the picture is reached. The picture hanging aid is then held against the wall and a downward force is applied to the handle 2 of the picture hanging aid. This causes the strip 1 of stiff, but elastic material to flex and press the point 4 against the wall with sufficient force to make an indentation in the surface of the wall. The picture and picture hanging aid are then removed and either a conventional picture hook hanging pin is driven into the wall at the position of the indentation or it is used as a centre for the drilling of a hole in the wall for a screw fastening.

Alternatively, the picture can be lifted off the hook 3 of the picture hanging aid and the position of the point of contact of the point 4 marked on the wall covering.

A device for facilitating the hanging of a picture in a pre-detennined position, comprising an elongated strip of a stiff, but elastic material, a handle at one end of the strip of material projecting in a plane orthogonal to the surface of the strip of material and at the other end of the strip of material and on the same side as the handle, a hook adapted to receive a picture suspension wire or cord and a hardened point projecting from the strip of material approximately opposite the said hook.

is made of carbon steel.
