Abstract

A masking agent is incorporated into both the active ingredients contained in the capsule, and into the gel matrix of the capsule shell, which is typically composed of gelatin, glycerine, or glycerol mono-stearate. The masking agent is orange oil. This 'dual masking' technique improves taste and acceptability during and after swallowing, when a rebound aftertaste may normally occur. It is applicable a wide range of preparations which contain strong tasting ingredients, such as fish oil, or garlic oil/powder, thereby eliminating the need for a deodorising process.

Description

2349817 (Novel Procedure To Mask The Characteristic Aftertaste Of
Ingredients In Soft Or Hard Gel Capsule Form) The invention relates to a novel method of preventing or - minimising the aftertaste associated with certain nutritional supplements, such as cod liver oil and omega-3 fish oil preparations. Such ingredients are well known for their unpleasant odour and often presented in gelatin capsule form for patient convenience.
The product uses a novel procedure to incorporate a masking agent into both the oily (or non-oily) contents of the capsule, and critically into the actual gel matrix of the soft or hard shell delivery system. This dual masking process improves taste and acceptability during swallowing, reducesrebound aftertaste and prevents perceptible odour when opening the bottle or storage container.
The shell to which the agent may be added is typically composed of gelatin and in the case of soft gel shells, glycerine and glycerol mono- stearate. The agent ma'Y,,consist of a synthetic composition flavour, or a concentrated natural extract, for example that of orange oil. The form added to the contents of the capsule may be identical or similar to the masking agent in the gel matrix, depending on the nature of the active ingredients.
The dual technique is applicable to a wide range of ingredients and supplements, including garlic oil or powder. Existing production of odourless forms of garlic may have the -negative effect of removing some of the beneficial active agent. Rather than a deodorising process, the product invention allows for the whole active material to be included, without the usual disadvantage of undesirable aftertaste.
