Abstract

A pipe coupling 11 comprises a pipe member which in use is fast or integral with a pipe, the pipe member having an external flange 13 and an end spigot 14 extending from the flange. A socket member 15 is provided with an end face for abutting the flange, and with a bore 17 extending from the end face for receiving the spigot. The pipe coupling is also provided with an elastomeric annular seal 22 at an intersection of the flange and the spigot, and releasable clamp means for clamping the flange to the end face, eg threaded pipe nut 16. The end face of the socket member has an annular rib (23, fig 2) which in use is pressed into contact with the flange by the releasable clamp means.

Description

Pipe Couplins The invention relates to pipe couplings. It is known to provide a pipe coupling of the kind in which an external flange and an end spigot is carried on or integral with a pipe. A known coupling includes a socket member having a bore to receive the spigot and an end face to abut the flange, a nut being used to clamp the flange to the end face. An elastomeric annular seal is provided at an intersection of the flange and the spigot to seal against the socket member.
A problem such a pipe coupling when used in critical situations such as in automotive fuel systems, is that there may be a very small evaporative permeation past the seal and it is an object of the present invention to reduce this.
According to the present invention there is provided a pipe coupling comprising a pipe member which in use is fast with or integral with a pipe, the pipe member having an external flange and an end spigot extending from the flange, a socket member having an end face for abutting the flange, a bore extending from the end face for receiving the spigot, an elastomeric annular seal at an intersection of the flange and the spigot to seal a leak path extending between the spigot and the bore and between the flange and the end face and releasable clamp means for clamping the flange to the end face, wherein the end face has an annular rib which is in use pressed into contact with the flange by the releasable clamp means and provides a further seal in said leak path.
Preferably, a flared mouth is provided at the intersection of the bore and the end face.
The releasable clamp means may comprise a nut in screw threaded engagement with the socket member.
The invention will now be described by way if example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: Fig. l is a cross-section through a pipe coupling assembly according to the invention assembled onto the end of a pipe; and Fig. 2 is an enlargement of the area encircled in Fig. 1.
A pipe coupling 11 is provided for a rigid metal pipe 12 and includes a pipe member comprising an external flange 13 and an end spigot 14 formed integrally with the pipe, e. g. by swaging. The coupling 11 also includes a socket member 15 screw threaded to receive a pipe nut 16 and which may be formed as part of a component such as a fuel pump or fuel filter. A bore 17 in the socket member 15 has an enlarged end portion 18 to receive the end spigot 14 and this has a flared mouth 19 at an intersection of the bore with an end face 21 of the socket member.
An elastomeric annular seal or 0-ring 22 is provided at an intersection of the flange 13 and the spigot 14 to seal against the flared mouth 19 and prevent leakage along a leak path extending between the spigot 14 and the bore 17 and between the flange 13 and the socket member end face 21.
As so far described, the pipe coupling is known, being sometimes known as a Saginaw coupling or connection. To further prevent leakage past the 0-ring 22, particularly evaporative losses in automotive fuel systems which may be otherwise undetected, the present invention provides an annular rib 23 on the end face 21 of the socket member 15. When the pipe nut 16 is tightened, it acts as releasable clamp means to press the annular rib 23 into contact with the flange, thereby providing a further seal in is in the same leak path as the 0-ring 22. This helps prevent evaporative losses from the connection. Indeed, if the 0-ring 22 is lost or damaged, the annular rib 23 provides a seal in its own right which may be sufficient for the purpose.
It will be appreciated that other forms of coupling components may be used.
For example, an externally threaded nut may be used in conjunction with an internally threaded socket member. The socket member may be of metal or an appropriate engineering plastics.
Instead of a flange and spigot formed integrally with the metal pipe, a separate pipe member may be formed with a flange and spigot and fixed to the pipe by swaging, brazing or by other known methods. Such a flange member may be used on a pipe made of plastics material or materials.
