Abstract
234,782. Passmore, A. A. May 27, 1924, [Convention date]. Teaching arithmetic. -A device for teaching arithmetic consists of a tray a, Fig. 1, or a frame e, Fig. 6, divided into equal spaces by vertical lines which are numbered consecutively, and a number of movable blocks c made to varying lengths to the same scale to fit in the tray or slide in the frame. The blocks c are numbered in accordance with their length, and, as shown in Fig. 1, may be used to demonstrate the combinations of numbers which add up to 10, or to illustrate the factors of 10. To effect the same for numbers less than 10, a rectangular mask may cover up the 10, 9, or other column on the tray a, or a mask m, shaped as shown in Fig. 8, may be used to demonstrate the combinations of numbers which add up to 7, or to any other number less than 10. The frame e, Fig. 6, is formed at the front with a shelf g at the back of which is a groove in which the blocks c slide. This frame can be used for teaching addition, subtraction, or for teaching the factors of numbers up to 144. For subtraction, a stop k is set to the required number, and a block c corresponding to the number to be subtracted is moved against the left edge of the stop. By reading from the left edge of the block c, the answer is obtained. The stop k is held in position by a clip l, or by a pin engaging in one of a series of holes in the groove in which the slides c move. Blind persons, teaching.-The number blocks may be provided with Braille characters.
