Abstract

Apparatus 1 comprises a base 2, a bed 3 on which a user lies, and a set of cranks 8, 13 to be turned by the feet and hands. Both cranks are associated with a toothed drive wheel and are connected by a toothed drive belt. If the user has a disability of the upper limbs only the foot crank 8 need be used, and vice versa if the user has a disability of the lower limbs. Alternatively, both cranks can be used or a motor may be attached to the device to turn the cranks. The whole apparatus, including the bed 3, may be tilted as shown in figure 5. This is achieved by turning adjuster 6. Second adjuster 12 may be used to lengthen or shorten the distance between the cranks 8, 13. Saddle 17 may be used to help support the user when the bed 3 is in the inclined position. A dynamo may be attached by bracket 10, and used to power a radio.

Description

HAND OR FOOT PEDALLED EXERCISER This invention relates to an exerciser in which the upper or lower body or a combination of both can power the exerciser by means of two sets of crank and pedal assemblies connected by a drive belt.
This exerciser is designed for the use of partial or severely disabled users.
It would also be of benefit to injury rehabilitation.
The following is the main muscle groups which are exercised :- UPPER BODY Biceps Triceps Deltoids Pectoralis Major Most of the hand and forearm muscles.
LOWER BODY Gluteus Maximus Quadriceps Hamstrings Gastrocnemius Most of the foot muscles.
The joints of the wrist, elbow, shoulder, ankle, knee and hip mre also exercised.
Without exercise or movement of muscle and joints, deterioration of muscle and bone mass occurs causing health problems.
With some modifications this exerciser can be adapted to an individuals personal disablement injury needs, and able bodied people as well.
The drive wheels can be changed to give differant gear ratios between the hand and foot crank assemblies.
A belt tensioner takes up any slack in the drive belt.
The pedals on the leg cranks can slide up or dovm the cranks to increase or decrease the radius of rotation of the legs.
A pole with an attached triangular strap fasilitates getting on and off the exerciser.
This exerciser can be inclined to add to the flexibility of use.
For the severly disabled an electric motor having a drive wheel can power the whole exerciser, by means of an extra drive wheel on the leg crank shaft.
A second drive belt connects the two drive wheels together.
Reversing the above the electric motor can be replaced by a dynamo which for example would power a radio, thus adding to the users motivation.
Leg stirrups can be attached to the leg pedals if there is a problem with the legs bowing out from the hip joint.
Straps can similarly be used on the hand pedals to help them grip.
It can be made using either metal, plastic material or wood in a suitable combination to give it a user friendly operation and appearance.
HAND OR FOOT PEDALLED EXERCISER A preferred embodiment of the invention is now described, with reference to the accompanying drawing which are not to scale in which: Figure I shows a side elevation of the whole exerciser.
Figure 2 is a drawing of the cross section of the leg crank assembly.
Figure 3 shows the details of the drive belt tensioner.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the leg pedal and crank.
Figure 5 a sketch of the whole exerciser in an inclined position with a person using it.
As shown in figure I a bench I. has an extended base rail 2. to stabilize the exerciser when used in the inclined mode.
A padded bed 3. which has a roll neck support 4. is pivoted at 5.
Turning adjuster 6. inclines bed 3. A vertical column 7. has attached to its top the leg pedal crank assembly 8. to raise or lower column 7. adjuster 9. is turned. A universal bracket 10. enables an electric motor or dynamo to be attached to the exerciser.
A horizontal arm II. pretrudes from column 7. adjuster I2. when turned lengthens or shortens arm II. The hand pedal crank assembly I3. is attached to the end of arm II.
The belt tension device I4. is also fixed to arm II.
I5. is the toothed drive belt connecting the two sets of crank assemblies 8. and I3.
I6. is the pole carrying the triangular strap to assist in the use of the exerciser. A detachable sandle I7. with its horizontal adjustment pillar is used primarily when the exerciser is inclined.
As shown in figure 2. The bearing housing I8. carries the crank shaft I9. with the two leg cranks 20. attached. Two drive wheels 2I. are drawn the dotted one represents the position of the additional drive wheel if an electrical motor or dynamo is connected to the exerciser.
The left crank can be removed for changing of wheels for differant gear ratios.
The hand crank assembly is the same, but having no accomodation for an extra drive wheel.
As shown in figure 3. The toothed drive belt passes over the tensioner tooth wheel 22.
Turning adjuster 23. moves the adjuster arm 24. up or down.
The correct adjustment is obtained by spring 25. being extended by the pivoted arm 26. so as to approximately keep arm 26. central of the upper groove in 24.
As shown in figure 4. The side elevation ot the leg crank 20. is shown.
The groove enables the pedals to be slid up or down to differant fixed positions.
The side elevation of the leg pedals 27. are shown in the closed and in open positions 28.
The foot strap channels are shown 29. The stirrup 30. can be adjusted to the width of the leg or removed from the pedal 27.
As shown in figure 5. A sketch of the exerciser in use in the inclined position.
