Abstract

The system comprises a cap 1 for sealing the tank, the cap incorporating a movement sensor 2 for detecting turning of the cap. Upon detecting such movement a radio transmitter 3 is switched on to transmit a signal to a receiver 4 to actuate an alarm 5. Additionally, vibrations of the tank itself may be sensed. The tank may be a free standing storage tank or a fuel tank on a vehicle.

Description

A TANK PROTECTION SYSTEM This invention relates to a remote monitoring system for the protection of free standing storage tanks, or tanks fitted to wheeled vehicles, in order to detect and prevent the unlawful theft of their contents or interference in any way whatsoever to obtain unauthorised access.
Many transport companies experience theft of fuel overnight from parked vehicles and from their fuel storage tanks causing financial loss and delay in the departure of goods or vehicles from a depot. In some cases vehicles are left stranded until fresh fuel can be obtained. Consequently the good-will and reputation of the affecte companies also suffer as a direct result of such unlawful activity. In circumstances where there is no manned security even security lighting is no deterrent to these predators. Without security personnel calling at regular intervals, or someone responding to a burglar alarm (if triggered), it is conceivable that an entire fuel storage system could be drained without detection of its miscreants.
In order to gain speedy access, the thieves have to open or turn the fuel tank sealing caps in order to extract the contents. Each individual task will occur many times if several tanks are being drained.
By making use of this knowledge and by detecting fuel cap movement for example, it is possible to monitor a tank at all times of the day and night. Any activity involving interference with a fuel tank could be detected and used to indicate an alarm condition, unbeknown to thieves, and the appropriate authority alerted to the situation.
According to the present invention, there is provided a simple means for detecting fuel cap movement on a storage tank system.
Movement sensors together with a battery operated miniature radio transmitter are enclosed into a small housing and encapsulated in or fitted to the inside or outside of the fuel tank cap. When the cap is in its normal position on the tank the position sensors are in the OFF position. When the cap is turned in order to get at the fuel, the sensors detect this movement and switch ON power to the radio transmitter causing a signal to be transmitted to a radio receiver some distance away which when received, enables the appropriate action to be taken.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing where; Fig 1 shows a block diagram of the system.
Referring to Fig 1, the turning of the cap (1) by the thief is detected by the sensor (2) which switches ON a radio transmitter (3) this sends a signal to a radio receiver (4) which then triggers an alarm (5). This may either send the information via a direct telephone link to a Control Centre or via an automatic telephone dialling system. It may additionally switch on a CCTV camera and time lapsed video recorder for identification purposes.
Where necessary an alternative embodiment of the invention might involve the sensitivity of the device being adjusted to detect vibrations caused by interference with the body of a fuel tank or other similar storage vessel even though the sealing cap itself is not directly violated. The detection of these movements could be used as an alarm trigger in a modified version of the device described above.
