Abstract

A up-and-over door is counterbalanced at either side by tension spring 3 acting on the door via cable 4. Travelling pulley 15 is attached to the spring, and is (guided in the vertical track which guides a door-mounted roller, thus maintaining a desired orientation of the cord and pulley.

Description

APPARATUS FOR OPERATING A CLOSURE The invention relates to apparatus for operating a closure, particularly a closure such as a door for a garage, which is of the kind which lifts and tilts, being a so-called"up-and-over"door.

In such doors, there is apparatus or a mechanism which generally operates on a counter balance principe to control movement during an opening and closing cycle.

During such cycles, either opening or closing, the door panel can tilt or skew in relation to its main plane, thereby often leading to jamming which in the extreme can mean that the door cannot be used.

It is accordingly an object of the invention to seek to mitigate these disadvantages.

According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided apparatus for operating a closure, comprising biassing means by which the closure is counterbalanced, means adapted to connect the biassing means and the closure, and a device for maintaining a desired orientation of the connecting means during an opening and closing cycle of the closure.

The connecting means may comprise a cable and the device may comprise a displaceable pulley for the cable and guide means for the pulley during an opening and closing cycle. This is a relatively simple yet effective construction which nevertheless can provide the desired orientation.

The guide means may comprise a guide track means and a follower means adapted to guide this pulley during displacement thereof. This again provides a relatively simple construction, particularly when the guide track means and follower means may comprise plastics material. This provides for low friction with relative cheapness of construction and longevity in service.

Suitably, the guide track means may be fixed and the follower means may be slidable in relation thereto. This provides for effective movement in a single plane with no lateral movement thereby providing for and maintaining the desired orientation.

The apparatus may comprise a cartridge, adapted for mounting on a side of a closure. This enables the apparatus to be put up for sale as a set of parts, or in kit form, with a closure such as a door panel so that assembly can be effected in situ.

There may be means to prevent movement of the closure in use in a direction transverse to the plane thereof. This construction seeks to prevent unlawful or undesired tampering with the closure by release of one part of the apparatus from another, so preventing forcing of the door to one side, for undesired access.

Suitably, the means to prevent such movement may comprise a bifurcated bracket adapted to receive a spindle of a roller of the apparatus. Thus the spindle may be protected and retained in a track therefor.

According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a set of parts for assembly to provide a closure, comprising a panel adapted to function as a closure and two of the apparatus as hereinbefore defined adapted respectively to be mounted one at each side of the panel.

According to a third aspect of the invention there is provided a closure, whenever assemble from a set of parts as hereinbefore defined.

The closure may comprise an up-and-over door, particularly for a garage.

Apparatus embodying the invention is hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Fig. 1 is an elevational view of apparatus according to the invention, as viewed from its position in use mounted on the side of a closure in the form of a panel such as an up-and-over door panel ; Fig. 2 is an elevational view in the direction of arrow"II"in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the apparatus, taken in the direction of arrow"III"of Fig. 2. Referring to the drawings, there is shown apparatus 1 for operating a closure, particularly an up-and-over garage door 2 kind of closure, comprising biassing means 3 in the form of an extension spring, means in the form of an elongate flexible yet inextensive member such as a cable 4 to connect (indirectly) the biassing means 3 and the closure 2, and a device 5 for maintaining a desired orientation of the connecting means 4 during an opening and closing cycle of the closure 2.

The apparatus 1 comprises a cartridge or assembly 6, and in use there will be two such cartridges 6 put up for sale in a pack of fittings, normally with the panel 2 such as a wooden door panel which in use is an up-and-over door, usually for a construction such as a garage. Each cartridge or assembly 6 is in the form of a guide track 7 which in use is a vertical guide track, being mounted on one side edge of the panel 2 by being fixed thereto by drilling through holes therein into the door panel at desired predetermined positions and fixing thereto as by screws 8.

The guide tracks 7 are each held in correct position relative to the door panel by top, in use, brackets known as transit brackets 9, and lock brackets 10, known as positive lock brackets, in the region of roller spindles 11 which are housed in housings 12 which run in the vertical track 7. The housings 12 are each attached to a cable 4 which extends over a fixed pulley 13 in a link arm wall bracket 14 fixed to a frame for the door panel, to the extension spring 3. The cable in each cartridge 6 is looped under, as viewed, a displaceable pulley 15 which is connected to the extension spring 3 by a spring plug 16. The lower (as viewed) end of the extension spring 3 is held captive on the vertical guide track by a hook arrangement 17. When each cartridge 6 is offered up to an edge of the door 2 and is in the correct position and held in place by the screws 8, the link arm wall brackets 14 are secured to the frame in which the door sits, as by screwing.

There is at the top of the guide track a guide section 18 and runner 19 which together define the means 5 for maintaining orientation of the door 2 in an opening and closing cycle. The guide section 18 is a channel section fixed in the vertical guide 7 and the runner 19 forms the follower means which slides relative thereto, both being of plastics material to obviate friction as much as possible.

In operation, the door panel 2 is counterbalanced by the extension spring 3 which, when the door 2 is closed, puts the cable 4 under tension. When the door 2 is first opened, the extension spring 3 contracts, thereby pulling the cable 4 and engaging that cable with the displaceable pulley 15. On continued opening movement, the pulley 15 is guided vertically with respect to the guide track 7, by the means 5, the follower 19 being a close-sliding fit in the track 18 as shown in Fig. 1, so that there is no lateral movement or"yaw"of the door, which is thus maintained in the desired orientation during an opening and closing cycle. In one end, or open, position as shown in Fig. 1, the pulley 15 itself enters the track 18 for an additional positive engagement.

The positive lock bracket 10 comprises a bifurcated bracket in which projecting parts of the spindle 11 are received. The brackets 10 are open upwardly and limbs thereof project in a direction towards the top as viewed and on either side of the spindle 11 so as to prevent access thereto. Thus when the door 2 is closed and locked the positive lock bracket 10 prevents access to the spindle 11 and thereby prevents the panel 2 from being forced to one side which would if possible release the spindle from the track which would not be desirable as unlawful access to a structure closed by the door could be gained.

It will be understood that the apparatus 1 described herein with reference to the drawings is relatively easy to install, is reliable, has a smooth action, provides security and can be fitted to a relatively slim door, for example one having a 50mm wide frame.

Claims (14)

  1. CLAIMS 1. Apparatus for operating a closure, comprising biassing means by which the closure is counterbalanced, means adapted to connect the biassing means and the closure, and a device for maintaining a desired orientation of the connecting means during an opening and closing cycle of the closure.
  2. 2. Apparatus according to Claim 1, the connecting means comprising a cable and the device comprising a displaceable pulley for the cable and a guide means for the pulley during an opening and closing cycle.
  3. 3. Apparatus according to Claim 2, the guide means comprising a guide track means and a follower means adapted to guide the pulley during displacement thereof.
  4. 4. Apparatus according to Claim 3, the guide track means and the follower means comprising plastics material.
  5. 5. Apparatus according to Claim 3 or Claim 4, the guide track means and the follower means being relatively slidable.
  6. 6. Apparatus according to Claim 5, the guide track means being fixed and the follower means being slidable in relation thereto.
  7. 7. Apparatus according to any preceding claim, comprising a cartridge, adapted for mounting on a side of a closure.
  8. 8. Apparatus according to any preceding claim, comprising means to prevent movement of the closure-in use in a direction transverse to the plane thereof.
  9. 9. Apparatus according to Claim 8, the means to prevent movement comprising a bifurcated bracket adapted to receive a spindle of a roller of the apparatus.
  10. 10. Apparatus according to Claim 9, the bifurcated bracket comprising means to retain the spindle in a locked position of the closure.
  11. 11. Apparatus for operating a closure, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
  12. 12. A set of parts for assembly to provide a closure, comprising a panel adapted to function as a closure and two of the apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims adapted respectively to be mounted one at each side of the panel.
  13. 13. A closure, whenever assembled from a set of parts according to Claim 12.
  14. 14. A closure according to Claim 13, comprising an up-and-over door.
