Description

2340018 GENERAL PLWOSE RAY-ING TOOL.
This invention relates to a rake with a hinged head. A rake is a well known and widely used tool consisting of a pole or handle with a rigid comb like crossbar. A rake is used for gathering straw, hay, leaves, debris and smoothing soil and gravel. The action of using a standard rake is as follows: firstly the rake is lifted, thrown forward, lowered to the ground, then pulled back- The necessary actions of lifting and throwing the standard rake forward make raking a tiring process, particularly for the elderly or infirm. The standard rake with its fixed comb-like crossbar cannot be pushed forward without considerable effort and will frequently catch and be impeded by the ground.
According to the present invention there is provided a hinged head to the rake so that when the rake is pushed forward the rake head collapses, allowing the rake to glide smoothly over ground without the need for lifting. When the rake is pulled back the rake head retums to its original upright position so that the chosen material can be raked efficiently and effectively -in the normal way. The invention enables a much larger rake head to be employed than on conventional rakes as weight is less of a problem as the hinged rake does not require lifting off the ground in use. When raking debris from a lawn the hinged rake slides smoothly over the grass resulting in less damage to the lawn. Similarly when raking amongst plants the hinged rake will glide over low growing plants without causing damage.
The fact that the present invention does not need to be lifted, means as it can be operMed- with greater ease and even with one hand making it a great asset to the elderly and infirm. The size and shape of the hinged rake can vary, small for borders I or much larger for gravel drives so that a lot more ground can be covered at a single stroke. The hinged rake may be constructed from metal, plastic, wood or using a combination of materials.
The invention will now be described in. greater detail by way of example with reference to the drawings in which Figures I and 2 show perspective views of one form of the invention and Figures 3 and- 4 show side elevations of one form of the invention. Figures I And 3 show the rake in its collapsed state on the forward pushed stroke and Figures 2 and 4 show the rake in its upright state on the backward pulled stroke.
A pole or handle is attached to the stem portion (5) which is itself attached to the combed section of the rake (1) by means of a hinge (4). The figures depict the hinge held together by a nut or spring washer but other suitable means may be employed. A spring (3) may be provided to aid the return of the combed section (1) to an upright position. Other means may be used in addition to or instead of the spring (3) to bring the combed section (1) to an upright position, and include a piston, plunger, a spring device attached to the hinge bolt itself, or an elastomeric material. A guard (2) is also depicted and is useful to hinder or stop debris from fouling the hinged mechanism.
A means could also be provided on the lunged rake head to ensure that the combed section (1) is at the correct angle to the ground when the rake head is in the upright position.

Claims (7)

1. A rake with a hinged head such that the combed section collapses on the forward stroke of the raking process and returns to the upright position when pulled back under the normal action of raking enabling the rake head to keep in contact with the ground at all times during raking.
2. A rake with a hinged head as claimed in Claim I having a device or means to aid the return the combed section of the head to an upright position.
3. A rake with a hinged head as claimed in Chain 2 where the device or means to return the combed section of the head to an upright position is a spring, piston, plunger or an elastomeric material.
4. A rake with a hinged head as claimed in Claims 1-3 having a guard to prevent debris from fouling the hinge mechanism.
5. A rake with a hinged head as claimed in Claims 1-4 that is constructed from metal, plastic, wood or a combination of materials..
6. A rake with a hinged head as claimed in Claim 1-5 connected to a pole or handle.
7. A rake with a hinged head as claimed in Claim 6 where the pole or handle is constructed from metal, plastic, wood or a combination of materials.
