Description

2339384 I=ro-vements relating to IQQth Brushes This invention relates

generally to tooth brushes, and more specifically to a tooth brush incorporating a toothpaste delivery means.

According to the invention, there is provided a tooth brush having a bristle head at one end and a handle portion incorporating a toothpaste reservoir at the end of the handle remote from the bristle head, and a passageway in the handle interconnecting the reservoir with the bristle head, the arrangement being such that a charge of toothpaste can be delivered to the bristle head under user control.

While the reservoir could be constituted by a squeezable container, preferably a piston and drive means therefor is provided.

Preferably, the handle is formed in two separate parts, one carrying the bristle head at one end and the other constituting the toothpaste reservoir, which replaceably secures to the first part at the end thereof remote from the bristle head.

The means by which the two parts of the handle interconnect is preferably a screw fl=d.

Preferably, at the end of the passageway exiting to the bristle head, a one way valve, for example a spring loaded one way valve, is incorporated, whereby toothpaste is delivered to the bristle head only when pressure is applied to the paste within the reservoir. A finger operable valve could be provided instead of an automatic one way valve.

A preferred toothpaste delivery means is a piston in the reservoir drivable towards the bristle head by a screwthreaded rod coupled to a rotatable control knob at the end of the reservoir remote from the bristle head. If desired, a miniature slideway on the interior wall of the reservoir may hold the piston against rotation to ensure that it is longitudinally driven towards the bristle head when the control knob is rotated. The control knob may have an associated click/stop device to prevent inadvertent rotation of the knob.

While the tooth brush may be designed for home use with a high volume reservoir, the primary use envisaged for the brush is during travel, typically with a reservoir having a toothpaste capacity for say 7 to 14 days in typical brush usage. A rigid reservoir with paste delivery means is desirable for travel usage, but the option of a squeezable reservoir is possible for home usage.

At least for travel usage, the tooth brush is preferably provided with a slide-on or screw-on cover for enclosing at least the bristle portion of the handle. In one embodiment, the cover is internally threaded to mate with an external thread on the end of the reservoir more adjacent to the bristle head so that a substantially cylindrical tooth brush unit is formed which, by means of an external clip, e.g. on the cover, is adapted to secure to a jacket pocket or the like.

While the tooth brush may be designed to be thrown away after the toothpaste content has been used up, as mentioned previously, a preferred brush has a two part handle of which the reservoir is replaceable, whereby a spent reservoir can be detached and a full reservoir fitted in its place.

The invention therefore also extends to a tooth brush having means for attachment of a toothpaste reservoir from which paste can in use be delivered to the bristle head, and also to a toothpaste reservoir having means enabling its attachment to the said toothbrush.

The tooth brush in accordance with the invention is fin-ther described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Figure 1 shows a tooth brush unit in exploded view; and Figure 2 shows the closed tooth brush unit.

Referring to Figure 1, the illustrated tooth brush has a bristle head 10 at one end of a handle 12 which includes a toothpaste reservoir 14 which, by means of screwthreads 16, 18, replaceably attaches to the end of handle portion 20 carrying the bristle head.

The reservoir 14 comprises a substantially rigid toothpaste container within which a piston element 22 is longitudinally drivable by a screwthreaded rod 24 rotatable by a control knob 26 associated with a click/stop device 28.

The reservoir 14, when the control knob 26 is rotated, delivers the paste to the bristle head 10 via a passageway 29 in the handle portion 20 and a spring loaded one way valve 30.

The tooth brush unit shown in Figure 2, marked with typical dimensions, is completed by a cover 32 which screwthreadedly attaches, by means of screwthreads 24, 36, to the end of the reservoir 14 nearer the bristle head 10, forming a generally cylindrical unit securable to a jacket pocket by means of clip 38 on the cover.

The illustrated tooth brush is especially intended for use when travelling, the reservoir having a capacity of 7 to 14 days paste in typical usage.

Modifications possible for home use include the option of a squeezable reservoir having up to 3 months paste capacity in typical usage, and omission of the cover.

The illustrated tooth brush is designed for replacement of the reservoir when the paste is used up, but a disposable tooth brush in which the reservoir is not replaceable also falls within the ambit of the invention.
