Abstract

A camera type electronic language translation system has a camera lens (111), a user interface (121), a charged coupling diode (11), a digital signal processing unit (13), a temporary image storage area (14), a main system control unit (12), a screen display control unit (15), a display screen (151), a character/alphabet recognition unit (16), and a language translation unit (17). Sound output, and/or image compression (for storage), may also be provided.

Description

TITLE:CAMERA TYPE ELECTRONIC TRANSLATION SYSTEM BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The invention relates to an electronic translation system. More particularly, the invention relates to a camera type electronic translation system.

A conventional electronic translation machine is connected to a keyboard. The user should keyboard the alphabets and the characters into the electronic translation machine. If the user is not familiar with a foreign language, the user may not be able to keyboard the foreign alphabets and characters into the electronic translation machine. The user may not recognize the foreign alphabets and characters, either. Furthermore, the keyboard may not provide foreign alphabet keys nor foreign character keys.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION An object of the invention is to provide a camera type electronic translation system which can photograph alphabets and characters into the electronic translation system so that the user need not keyboard the alphabets and the characters.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a block diagram illustrating a camera type electronic translation system of a first preferred embodiment in accordance with the <RTI>invntion;</RTI> FIG. 2 is a block diagram illustrating a camera type electronic translation system of a second preferred embodiment in accordance with the invention; FIG. 3 is a block diagram illustrating a camera type electronic translation system of a third preferred embodiment in accordance with the invention; FIG. 4 is a block diagram illustrating a camera type electronic translation system of a fourth preferred embodiment in accordance with the invention.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION Referring to FIG. 1, a first camera type electronic translation system 1 comprises a camera lens 111, a user interface 121, a charged coupling diode 11, a digital signal processing unit 13, a temporary image storage area 14, a main system control unit 12, a screen display control unit 15, a display screen 151, a character/alphabet recognition unit 16, and a language translation unit 17.

The user interface 121 contains a plurality of control buttons. The charged coupling diode 11 is a photoelectronic sensor which produces a photosensitive image.

The digital signal processing unit 13 transforms the photosensitive image into a digital signal. The temporary image storage area 14 stores the digital signal temporarily. The main system control unit 12 fetches data from the user interface 121 and responds to a setting information of the user interface 121. The screen display control unit 15 is controlled by the main system control unit 12 to transform the digital signal into a screen output signal on the display screen 151. The display screen 151 is controlled by the screen display control unit 15 to display the screen output signal. The character/alphabet recognition unit 16 receives a control signal from the main system control unit 12 and fetches the digital signal from the temporary image storage area 14 to recognize characters/alphabets. The language translation unit 17 receives the characters/alphabets and translates the characters/alphabets into another language from a database in the language translation unit 17. The translated characters/alphabets are stored in the temporary image storage area 14.

A translation process has the following steps: Step 1: Photograph with the camera lens 111 to produce a photosensitive image in the charged coupling diode 11.

Step 2: Digitize the photosensitive image into a digital signal via the digital signal processing unit 13 and store the digital signal in the temporary image storage area 14.

Step 3: Display a picture on the display screen 151 while the screen display control unit 15 is controlled by the main system control unit 12.

Step 4: The character/alphabet recognition unit 16 receives a control signal from the main system control unit 12 and fetches the digital signal from the temporary image storage area 14 to recognize characters/ alphabets. The language translation unit 17 receives the characters/alphabets and translates the characters/ alphabets into another language from a database in the language translation unit 17.

Step 5: The translated characters/alphabets are displayed on the display screen 151 after the screen display control unit 15 fetches the translated characters/alphabets from the temporary image storage area 14.

Referring to FIG. 2, a second camera type electronic translation system la comprises a camera lens <RTI>lila,</RTI> a user interface 121a, a charged coupling diode <RTI>Ila,</RTI> a digital signal processing unit 13a, a temporary image storage area 14a, a main system control unit 12a, a screen display control unit 15a, a display screen 151a, a character/alphabet recognition unit 16a, and a language translation unit 17a. The user interface 121a contains a plurality of control buttons. The electronic coupling element <RTI>11a</RTI> is a photoelectronic sensor which produces a photosensitive image. The digital signal processing unit 13a transforms the photosensitive image into a digital signal. The temporary image storage area 14a stores the digital signal temporarily. The main system control unit 12a fetches data from the user interface 121a and responds to a setting information of the user interface 121a. The screen display control unit 15a is controlled by the main system control unit 12a to transform the digital signal into a screen output signal on the display screen 151a. The display screen 151a is controlled by the screen display control unit 15a to display the screen output signal. The character/alphabet recognition unit 16a receives a control signal from the main system control unit 12a and fetches the digital signal from the temporary image storage area 14a to recognize characters/alphabets. The language translation unit 17a receives the characters/alphabets and translates the characters/alphabets into another language from a database in the language translation unit 17a. The translated characters/alphabets are stored in the temporary image storage area 14a. A compression unit 22a is controlled by the user interface 121a to compress the photosensitive image. A data storage unit 23a stores the compressed photosensitive image. A decompression unit 21a fetches the compressed photosensitive image from the data storage unit 23a to decompress the compressed photosensitive image on the display screen <RTI>151a.</RTI>

Referring to FIG. 3, a third camera type electronic translation system <RTI>1b</RTI> comprises a camera lens <RTI>lllb,</RTI> a user interface 121b, a charged coupling diode <RTI>llb,</RTI> a digital signal processing unit 13b, a temporary image storage area 14b, a main system control unit 12b, a screen display control unit 15b, a display screen 151b, a character/alphabet recognition unit 16b, a language translation unit 17b, a sound synthetic unit <RTI>18b,</RTI> a voice control unit l9b, and a loudspeaker 191b. The user interface 121b contains a plurality of control buttons.

The charged coupling diode lib is a photoelectronic sensor which produces a photosensitive image. The digital signal processing unit 13b transforms the photosensitive image into a digital signal. The temporary image storage area 14b stores the digital signal temporarily. The main system control unit 12b fetches data from the user interface 121b and responds to a setting information of the user interface 121b. The screen display control unit 15b is controlled by the main system control unit 12b to transform the digital signal into a screen output signal on the display screen 151b. The display screen 151b is controlled by the screen display control unit 15b to display the screen output signal. The character/alphabet recognition unit 16b receives a control signal from the main system control unit 12b and fetches the digital signal from the temporary image storage area 14b to recognize characters/alphabets. The language translation unit 17b receives the characters/alphabets and translates the characters/alphabets into another language from a database in the language translation unit 17b. The translated characters/alphabets are stored in the temporary image storage area 14b. The sound synthetic unit 18b has a software to produce a sound signal. The voice control unit 19b receives the sound signal, amplifies the sound signal and outputs the sound signal into the loudspeaker l91b. The loudspeaker 191b is controlled by the voice control unit 19b to output the sound signal.

A translation process has the following steps: Step 1: Photograph with the camera lens lllb to produce a photosensitive image in the charged coupling diode llb.

Step 2: Digitize the photosensitive image into a digital signal via the digital signal processing unit 13b and store the digital signal in the temporary image storage area 14b.

Step 3: Display a picture on the display screen 151b while the screen display control unit 15b is controlled by the main system control unit 12b.

Step 4: The character/alphabet recognition unit 16b receives a control signal from the main system control unit 12b and fetches the digital signal from the temporary image storage area 14b to recognize characters/ alphabets. The language translation unit 17b receives the characters/alphabets and translates the characters/ alphabets into another language from a database in the language translation unit 17b. The sound synthetic unit 18b has a software to produce a sound signal. The voice control unit 19b receives the sound signal, amplifies the sound signal and outputs the sound signal into the loudspeaker 191b.

Step 5: The translated characters/alphabets are displayed on the display screen 151b after the screen display control unit 15b fetches the translated characters/alphabets from the temporary image storage area 14b.

Referring to FIG. 4, a fourth camera type electronic translation system Ic comprises a camera lens <RTI>lllc,</RTI> a user interface 121c, a charged coupling diode llc, a digital signal processing unit 13c, a temporary image storage area 14c, a main system control unit 12c, a screen display control unit 15c, a display screen 151c, a character/alphabet recognition unit 16c, a language translation unit 17c, a sound synthetic unit 18c, a voice control unit 19c, and a loudspeaker l91c. The user interface 121c contains a plurality of control buttons.

The charged coupling diode llc is a photoelectronic sensor which produces a photosensitive image. The digital signal processing unit 13c transforms the photosensitive image into a digital signal. The temporary image storage area 14c stores the digital signal temporarily. The main system control unit 12c fetches data from the user interface 121c and responds to a setting information of the user interface 121c. The screen display control unit 15c is controlled by the main system control unit 12c to transform the digital signal into a screen output signal on the display screen 151c. The display screen 151c is controlled by the screen display control unit 15c to display the screen output signal. The character/alphabet recognition unit 16c receives a control signal from the main system control unit 12c and fetches the digital signal from the temporary image storage area 14c to recognize characters/alphabets. The language translation unit 17c receives the characters/alphabets and translates the characters/alphabets into another language from a database in the language translation unit 17c. The translated characters/alphabets are stored in the temporary image storage area 14c. The sound synthetic unit 18c has a software to produce a sound signal. The voice control unit <RTI>l9c</RTI> receives the sound signal, amplifies the sound signal and outputs the sound signal into the loudspeaker l91c. The loudspeaker 191c is controlled by the voice control unit 19c to output the sound signal. A compression unit 22c is controlled by the user interface 121c to compress the photosensitive image. A data storage unit 23c stores the compressed photosensitive image. A decompression unit <RTI>21c</RTI> fetches the compressed photosensitive image from the data storage unit 23c to decompress the compressed photosensitive image on the display screen 151c.

The invention is not limited to the above embodiment but various modification thereof may be made. Further, various changes in form and detail may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.

Claims (7)

I CLAIM:
1. A camera type electronic translation system comprising: a camera lens, a user interface, a charged coupling diode, a digital signal processing unit, a temporary image storage area, a main system control unit, a screen display control unit, a display screen, a character/alphabet recognition unit, and a language translation unit, the user interface containing a plurality of control buttons, the charged coupling diode being a photoelectronic sensor to produce a photosensitive image, the digital signal processing unit transforming the photosensitive image into a digital signal, the temporary image storage area storing the digital signal temporarily, the main system control unit fetching data from the user interface and responding to a setting information of the user interface, the screen display control unit controlled by the main system control unit to transform the digital signal into a screen output signal on the display screen, the display screen controlled by the screen display control unit to display the screen output signal, the character/alphabet recognition unit receiving a control signal from the main system control unit and fetching the digital signal from the temporary image storage area to recognize characters/alphabets, the language translation unit receiving the characters/alphabets and translating the characters/alphabets into another language from a database in the language translation unit, the translated characters/alphabets stored in the temporary image storage area.

A camera type electronic translation system as claimed in claim 1, wherein a compression unit is controlled by the user interface to compress the photosensitive image, a data storage unit stores the compressed photosensitive image, and a decompression unit fetches the compressed photosensitive image from the data storage unit to decompress the compressed photosensitive image on the display screen.

A camera type electronic translation system as claimed in claim 1, wherein a translation process has the following steps: Step 1: photograph with the camera lens to produce a photosensitive image in the charged coupling diode, Step 2: digitize the photosensitive image into a digital signal via the digital signal processing unit and store the digital signal in the temporary image storage area, Step 3: display a picture on the display screen while the screen display control unit is controlled by the main system control unit, Step 4: the character/alphabet recognition unit receives a control signal from the main system control unit and fetches the digital signal from the temporary image storage area to recognize characters/alphabets, the language translation unit receives the characters/ alphabets and translates the characters/alphabets into another language from a database in the language translation unit, Step 5: The translated characters/alphabets are displayed on the display screen after the screen display control unit fetches the translated characters/alphabets from the temporary image storage area.
4. A camera type electronic translation system comprising: a camera lens, a user interface, a charged coupling diode, a digital signal processing unit, a temporary image storage area, a main system control unit, a screen display control unit, a display screen, a character/alphabet recognition unit, a language translation unit, a sound synthetic unit, a voice control unit, and a loudspeaker, the user interface containing a plurality of control buttons, the charged coupling diode being a photoelectronic sensor to produce a photosensitive image, the digital signal processing unit transforming the photosensitive image into a digital signal, the temporary image storage area storing the digital signal temporarily, the main system control unit fetching data from the user interface and responding to a setting information of the user interface, the screen display control unit controlled by the main system control unit to transform the digital signal into a screen output signal on the display screen, the display screen controlled by the screen display control unit to display the screen output signal, the character/alphabet recognition unit receiving a control signal from the main system control unit and fetching the digital signal from the temporary image storage area to recognize characters/alphabets, the language translation unit receiving the characters/alphabets and translating the characters/alphabets into another language from a database in the language translation unit, the translated characters/alphabets stored in the temporary image storage area, the sound synthetic unit having a software to produce a sound signal, the voice control unit receiving the sound signal, amplifying the sound signal and outputs the sound signal into the loudspeaker, the loudspeaker controlled by the voice control unit to output the sound signal.

A camera type electronic translation system as claimed in claim 4, wherein a compression unit is controlled by the user interface to compress the photosensitive image, a data storage unit stores the compressed photosensitive image, and a decompression unit fetches the compressed photosensitive image from the data storage unit to decompress the compressed photosensitive image on the display screen.

A camera type electronic translation system as claimed in claim 4, wherein a translation process has the following steps: Step 1: photograph with the camera lens to produce a photosensitive image in the charged coupling diode, Step 2: digitize the photosensitive image into a digital signal via the digital signal processing unit and store the digital signal in the temporary image storage area, Step 3: display a picture on the display screen while the screen display control unit is controlled by the main system control unit, Step 4: the character/alphabet recognition unit receives a control signal from the main system control unit and fetches the digital signal from the temporary image storage area to recognize characters/alphabets, the language translation unit receives the characters/ alphabets and translates the characters/alphabets into another language from a database in the language translation unit, the sound synthetic unit produces a sound signal, the voice control unit receives the sound signal, amplifies the sound signal and outputs the sound signal into the loudspeaker, Step 5: The translated characters/alphabets are displayed on the display screen after the screen display control unit fetches the translated characters/alphabets from the temporary image storage area.
7. A camera type electronic translation system substantially as herein described and illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawings.
