Abstract

A clip-on anti-dazzle visor for use on a vehicle such as an automobile, comprises transparent anti-glare acrylic sheets which are attached to a conventional sun visor. The main sheet 10 of which projects a variable depth below the bottom edge of the opaque sun visor, giving a section of transparent anti-glare sheet which provides protection from direct sunshine whilst still allowing vision of the road ahead. A secondary sheet 12 is secured to the side of the main sheet by a pivot screw 20 and locking wing nut 14. This secondary sheet can be swung down at night to give a shield against the glare of oncoming vehicle headlights. The spring clips 22 form an easy attachment and detachment device and enable the anti-dazzle visor to fit on to various length sun visors thus permitting transfer to other vehicles.

Description

MT-1AZZLE VISOR This invention refers to an Anti-Dazzle Visor of dual versatility. It functions as a shield to the eyes of an automobile driver from the dazzling beams of the headlights of an on-coming vehicle at night, and also gives protection to a driver against the sun's direct rays by day.
It could also be used on tractors; trailers; buses; vans; recreational vehicles; boats and aircraft.
Night-time, during the hours of darkness, the driver faces a hazard in the form of glare from on-coming traffic headlights, which may momentarily blind a driver and passenger alike: Especially with the high intensity halogen headlamps now in use. Drivers often drive with their bright lights on that project the beams of light straight ahead rather than downward. This is especially hazardous for drivers on two-way traffic roads and unlit roads.
Day-time: every driver has had on occasion to use the automobile sun visor, particularly early in the morning, and late in the afternoon when the sun lies low in the horizon and shines directly in the drivers eyes.
To effectively block the sun's light and glare the conventional sun visor must be tilted downward at such an angle that the drivers vision of the road ahead is very limited and the sun may still shine into the drivers eyes.
During morning and evening rush hours in metropolitan areas the flow of traffic is impeded if commuter traffic is heading east in the morning and west in the evening; that drivers are half blinded by the sun, in fact perceptively slows rush hour traffic on sunny days.
The Anti-Dazzle Visor contrives to overcome these problems. The Anti Dazzle Visor consists essentially of two sections of transparent, polarized acrylic sheets with anti-glare properties. A main sheet clips on to the lower edge of existing sun visors. A section of sheet extends below the bottom edge of the opaque sun visor that will filter the sun's rays thus shielding the drivers eyes from blinding sunlight; whilst still allowing vision of the road ahead.
The principal feature of the Anti-Dazzle Visor is the secondary sheet of acrylic. This sheet being attached to a lower side of the main sheet by a swivel joint. It is free to swing downward when required to an OFFSET position and clamped secure by a locking wing nut.
In this state it interposes a shield of polarised anti-glare acrylic in line with the drivers sight and the high intensity beams of light from the headlights of approaching vehicles to eliminate most of the glare, thus allowing the driver a clearer view of his driving lane, in this manner making for safer driving.
Passengers sitting alongside the driver may also benefit from the use of the Anti-Dazzle Visor, by providing them with protection against solar rays and the glare from on-coming vehicle headlights at night.
When motoring and the sunshine streams through the drivers side window the Anti-Dazzle Visor gives added protection against the glare when the sun visor is swung over on its pivot joint to the side window.
Materials used to make up the Anti-Dazzle Visor may be various, such as a transparent sheet of acrylic - Flexiglass with solar tint; or else acrylic sheet with multiglare tinted and polarised. Materials wit the facility of automatically changing depth of tint according to the brightness of ambient light; varying transparency under different driving conditions.
The Anti-Dazzle Visor can be manufactured inexpensively - made entirely of plastic - is lightweight. Due to its construction it can easily be attached and detached by virtue of sprung clips. These clips are made long to enable an adjustment in the depth of sheet available below tyre sun visor for the benefit of drivers of short stature. If required the Anti-Dazzle Visor can be transferred to other vehicles, will adapt to most lengths of existing sun visors.
Anti-Dazzle Visor in no way damages or impedes the use of the conventional sun visor and is easily removed if so desired, Referring to the drawings, Figure I shows the complete assembly of the Anti Dazzle Visor as used on a right hand drive vehicle. Comprising of a main sheet IO with a pair of spring clips 22 affixed to its top edge. Section A-A in Figure 2 and Figure 4 illustrate how the clips are secured to the main sheet by the rivets 23. The spring clips have long slots enabling tlìe main sheet to be adjusted to a variable depth below the bottom edge of the sun visor.
Attached to the lower right side of the main sheet is a secondary sheet I2, which is secured to the main sheet by means of a pivot screw 20; flat washer I5; serrated washer I6 and finally a wing nut 14. This secondary sheet i free to rotate on the pivot screw until locked in an OFFSET position by the wing nut. Holes 24 enable the secondary sheet to be placed either right or left side as required. Figure 3 illustrates the complete Anti Dazzle Visor as used on a left hand drive automobile.
Referring now to Figure 5, tiis demonstrates the Anti-Dazzle Visor clipped to a typical sun visor on a right hand drive automobile. The main sheet IO is shown with clips 22 fully engaged and the main sheet is in its uppermost position, still leaving a section of sheet projecting delow the bottom edge of the sun visor to give protection to the driver eyes from the glare of headlights or the sun's rays whilst still allowing vision of the road ahead.
The secondary sheet I2 is shown in parked position A when not required, and swung down to position B for use at night to give a shield against the glare of on-coming vehicle headlights and locked in position by means of wing nut I4.
Figure 6 demonstrates the Anti-Dazzle Visor clipped on to the sun visor of a left hand drive vehicle. Sheet IO in this configuration is adjusted to its lower position giving a greater expanse of sheet below the sun visor, affording additional protection against dazzle for drivers of small stature.
