Abstract
A replica floppy disc 21 is integral with a back plate 22 to which a lockable cover 24 is pivoted; the floppy disc 21 is inserted into the disc drive slot of electronic equipment 27 so as to be captivated by its internal locking mechanism, the release actuator 23 being covered by the back plate 22 and by the closed cover 24, and may be captured against release. A movement sensitive alarm 26 is provided in the cover 24, on the back plate 22 or on the floppy disc 21. A wedge 28 engages the equipment 27 to prevent removal of the device.
Description
ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT SECURITY DEVICE
This invention relates to a detachable security device for the purposes of anti-taper, anti-theft.
ELectronic equipment and it's associated components have a high resale value and therefore it's protection aginst tamper or theft is desireable, the term electronic equipment is taken to embrace the following:- Electronic notebooks laptop computers, desk top computers, electronic typewriters, personal computers stand alone computer processor units, mainframe carputers, or any other memory storage device utilising a commercially available floppy disc drive.
According to the present invention there is provided a detachable security device comprising of a replicated floppy disc integrated into a backplate a wedge integrated into a cover housing, and a locking device to secure the cover housing to the bacrplate. Thtergrated within the invention is a security alarm.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings as follows:- Figure 1 Shews a perspective illustration of the security device in the disengaged and open position.
Figure 2
Shows a side view illustration of the security decice in the closed and unattached position.
Figure 3
Shows a plan view of the security device with it's position relative to the electronic equipnent to be protected and illustrated internal location of the wedge and replicated floppy disc.
Figure 4
Shows a perspective illustration of the security device in the attached and closed position.
Figure 3 shows the floppy disc replica Fig 1.21 inserted into the floppy disc drive of the electronic equipment to be protected Figl.27 whereupon it is fully engaged in the electronic equipments 27 own internal locking mechanism, resulting in the replicated disc 21 being captivated in the normal operational position.
The above operation causes the bridged space Fig 2.30 between the floppy disc replica Fig 1.21 and the backing plate 22 to be closed.
At this stage the electronic equipment 27 and the backplate 22 are caused to be linked together by the above action and can only be separated by the electronic equipment 27 own release mechanism actuates 23.
The front cover housing Fig 1 24 is then secured to the bacaplate 22 and held in position by a locking rnechenin 25 whereupon a fixed wedge Fig 2 .28 incorporated in the front cover housing Fig 1.24 engages through the backplate 22 into a position between the disc replica 21 currently held in the engaged position and the top edge of the electronic equipments 27 own floppy disc drive as shown in Figure 3,this action prevents the overall lengih of the security device being used as leverage to force the floppy disc replica 21 from its ncnmally engaged position as shown in Figure 3.
The above operation causes the electronic equipments own floppy dise drive release mechanism actuater 23 to be held in the locked and operational position until the devices front cover housing 24 is opened as illustrated in Figure 1.
Secondary to the above operation the capture of the electronic equipments floppy disc drive release mechanism actuator 23 relative to its given position through the backplate 22 is then preferable but not essential.
Securing the front cover housing 24 of the security device arms the alarm mechanism Fig 1.26 which may be housed in either the frcnt cover housing 24,or on the backplate 22 or in or on the replicated floppy disc 21,this arming may be simultaneous or delayed.
The alarm mechanism may take the form of:~ A touch sensitive outer casing, vibration detection, sensor or sensors to indicate movement from either the horizontal or vertical plain and may have mechanical or electronic formed circuitry to give: Temporary, permanent or timed indication of tamper or theft.
The alarm 26 once triggered may in itself take the form of: An intermittent audible wamThg,A sustained audible warning,An audible warming designed to work in conduction with any other electronic equipment 27 fitted with the invention and in close proximity to the original sauce of the alarm emission,An inaudible warning sigTlalled to a remote location the tempering with or atttepted theft of the electronic equipment for example through an already established security system,or by any other means of indicating that the alarm has been activated.
when a sustained audible option is selected for the security device any continuous tamper with or real of the electronic equipment 27 to be protected will result in a continuous audible alarm which remains at all times with the electronic equipment 27.
Once activated in the sustained audible mode the only means of unauthorised removal of the security device is by large scale structual damage to the electronic equipment 27 thus negating the original purpose of the theft, that is the high resale value of the electronic equipment 27 and its associated cccponents.
