Abstract

The waste water outlet comprises a conduit 18 which can extend along one of the sides of a shower tray 10 and a water collecting duct 19 projecting laterally from the conduit. The water collecting duct has an elongate slot 20 extending in a direction parallel or substantially parallel to the longitudinal extent of the conduit and communicating with the interior of the conduit. The water collecting duct is adapted to fit in a recess formed in a raised edge of the shower tray with the lowermost edge of the slot flush or substantially flush with the water collecting surface of the shower tray so that, in use, water collecting on the shower tray is discharged through the water collecting duct and thence the conduit of the waste water outlet. There is also disclosed a trap 17 (see Figure 5) comprising a chamber having an inlet and an outlet, a partition wall extending across the chamber between the inlet and the outlet, the partition wall extending from the top of the chamber to a position spaced above the bottom of the chamber, the lowermost edge of the partition wall being spaced below the inlet and the outlet.

Description

WASTE WATER OUTLET AND TRAP FOR A LOW LEVEL SHOWER TRAY This invention relates to a waste water outlet and a trap for a low level shower tray.
Special low level shower trays are produced enabling a handicapped person to take a shower while sitting in a wheelchair. Such shower trays are generally provided with a ramp enabling the person within the wheelchair to be wheeled from floor level up to the raised level of the surface of the shower tray on which the wheelchair stands during showering. Furthermore, such a shower tray has a slightly raised edge to prevent spillage of water from the shower tray during showering. The low level nature of these shower trays makes it difficult to fit conventional waste water outlets and traps because of the limited space available.
According to a first aspect of this invention there is provided a waste water outlet for a low level shower tray, comprising a conduit which can extend along one of the sides of the shower tray and a water collecting duct projecting laterally from the conduit, the water collecting duct having an elongate slot extending in a direction parallel or substantially parallel to the longitudinal extent of the conduit and communicating with the interior of the conduit, the water collecting duct being adapted to fit in a recess formed in a raised edge of the shower tray with the lowermost edge of the slot flush or substantially flush with the water collecting surface of the shower tray so that, in use, water collecting on the shower tray is discharged through the water collecting duct and thence the conduit of the waste water outlet.
Preferably, the water collecting duct is of trapezoidal external cross-section with its upper and lower sides parallel and its other two sides converging in a downwards direction for fitting in a recess of complementary shape in the raised edge of the shower tray.
Preferably, the elongate slot in the water collecting duct has a plurality of dividers (typically extending vertically from top to bottom of the slot) to prevent bars of soap entering the conduit.
Preferably, the conduit is a right cylindrical pipe open at both ends, one end being connectible to a waste water pipe and the other end being closed by a cap or plug which is removable for cleaning purposes.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a low level shower tray in combination with a waste water outlet according to the first aspect of the invention, the shower tray having a raised edge with a recess of complementary shape to the water collecting duct of the waste water outlet.
According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided a trap comprising a chamber having an inlet and an outlet, a partition wall extending across the chamber between the inlet and the outlet, the partition wall extending from the top of the chamber to a position spaced above the bottom of the chamber, the lowermost edge of the partition wall being spaced below the inlet and the outlet.
Preferably, the chamber has a removable lid for cleaning purposes.
Preferably, the chamber has a horizontal cross-sectional area substantially greater than the cross-sectional area of either the inlet or the outlet.
Preferably, the inlet and outlet are of tubular form extending in opposite or substantially opposite directions from the chamber.
A trap according to the second aspect of the invention can be connected downstream of the waste water outlet according to the first aspect of the invention.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic, partly exploded, view of a low level shower tray having a waste water outlet according to the first aspect of the invention and a trap according to the third aspect of the invention.
Figure 2 is a side view of one embodiment of a waste water outlet according to the first aspect of the invention, Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along line III - III of Figure 2, Figure 4 is a plan view of one embodiment of a trap according to the third aspect of the invention with the lid removed, and Figure 5 is a sectional view taken along line V - V of Figure 4.
Referring firstly to Figure 1 of the drawings, there is shown therein a low level shower tray 10 having a water collecting surface 11 and a raised edge 12. The height of the raised edge above the floor surface is typically about 70 mm.
The water collecting surface 11 is gently inclined downwards in two directions towards a recess 13 in the raised edge 12.
A ramp 14 is provided at one end of the shower tray so that access to the shower tray can be gained by a wheelchair. The ramp 14 may be integral with the shower tray or may be removable.
Figure 1 also shows a waste water outlet 15 connected by an elbow 16 to a trap 17 which is connected in turn to a waste water pipe 8.
The waste water outlet 15 is best shown in Figures 2 and 3. The waste water outlet 15 comprises a conduit in the form of a right cylindrical pipe 18 and a water collecting duct 19 projecting laterally from the pipe 18. The water collecting duct 19 has a trapezoidal external cross-section with its upper and lower sides 19a and l9b parallel and its other two sides 19e and 19d converging in a downwards direction.
The duct 19 has an elongate slot 20 extending parallel to the longitudinal extent of the pipe 16, which slot communicates with the interior of the pipe 18.
The recess 13 in the raised edge 12 of the shower tray 10 is of complementary shape to the water collecting duct 19 and receives the duct 19 as a close fit with the lowermost edge of the slot 20 flush with the water collecting surface 11 of the shower tray 10. The recess 13, therefore, extends below the water collecting surface 11 and a seal may be provided between the duct 19 and the walls of the recess 13. The duct 19 is secured to the shower tray 10 by screws (not shown) which pass through screw holes in the duct 19.
The slot 20 may have a plurality of dividers 21 extending from top to bottom of the slot to prevent bars of soap or similar objects from entering the pipe 18.
One end of the pipe 18 is connected to the trap 17 by the elbow 16. The other end of the pipe 18 is closed by a cup or plug which can be removed so that the pipe 18 can be cleaned as necessary.
The trap 17 is best shown in Figures 3 and 4. The trap 17 comprises a chamber 30, an inlet pipe 31 and an outlet pipe 32. The chamber 30 has a right cylindrical upstanding wall 33, a circular base 34 and a removable circular lid 35.
The inlet pipe 31 and outlet pipe 32 are connected to the wall 33 so as to diametrically oppose one another. A partition wall 36 extends across the chamber 30 midway between the inlet pipe 31 and the outlet pipe 32. The partition wall 36 extends from the top of the chamber 30 to a position spaced above the bottom of the chamber but below the inlet pipe 31 and the outlet pipe 32 and typically about 20 mm below the inlet pipe 31 and the outlet pipe 32. The horizontal cross-sectional area of the chamber 30 is substantially greater than the cross-sectional area of either the inlet or outlet pipes 31, 32 and this, together with the feature that the partition wall 36 extends well below the inlet and outlet pipes, ensures a substantial weight of water in the trap above the lowermost edge of the partition wall. This should ensure that suction created by water flowing through other interconnected pipes in the building will not break the trap and allow smells to pass upstream to the waste water outlet 15.
The lid 35 is screwed or bolted to the chamber 30 so that the lid can be removed to clean out the trap 17.
