Abstract

A material for controlling plant growth, by selective absorption of light in the 700 to 800 nm waveband whilst maintaining high transmission of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) (wavelength 400 nm to 700 nm approximately) comprises a carrier incorporating a phthalocyanine derivative represented by the general formula I below wherein the substituents R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 may be respectively the same or different groups selected from hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, halogeno, or other functional groups which do not adversely affect the stability or selective absorption performance of the material, and M is a metal atom selected from Mg, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Mn. Furthermore, heat build up in greenhouses is controllable by use of a film which inhibits transmission of light in the near to infra red region but permits a high transmission of PAR and comprises a laminate wherein at least one layer is a polymeric film which contains a dispersion of gas bubbles having a size predominantly in the range of 50 ~ m to 500 ~ m as determined by microscopic examination in the plane of the film.

Claims (20)

Claims
1. A material for controlling plant growth, by selective absorption of light in the 700 to 800 nm waveband whilst maintaining high transmission of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) (wavelength 400 nm to 700 nm approximately) comprising a carrier incorporating a phthalocyanine derivative represented by the general formula I below
wherein the substituents R1, R2, R3, R4 may be respectively the same or different groups selected from hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, halogeno, or other functional groups which do not adversely affect the stability or selective absorption performance of the material, and M is a metal atom selected from Mg, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Mn.
2. A material according to claim 1 wherein R1 = R4 and R2 = R3.
3. A material according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the alkyl substituents are selected from C1-C12 straight, branched or alicyclic groups and the aryl groups are optionally substituted by groups which do not adversely affect the stability or performance of the glazing/shading material.
4. A material according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the alkoxy substituents are C1-C6 alkoxy groups.
5. A material according to any one of claims 1 to 3 comprising a compound (II) of the formula I where R1 = R4 = OBun, R2 = R3 = C1, and M = Cu.
6. A method of preparation of a compound (II) of the formula I where R1 = R4 = OBun, R2 = R3 = Cl, and M = Cu, wherein the method comprises the following steps,

7. A material according to any one of the preceding claims 1 to 5 wherein the carrier is a plastics film formed from polymers selected from ethylene polymers, copolymers of ethylene and vinyl acetate, polystyrene, cellulose esters, amino resins, polyurethanes and polyamides.
8. A material according to claim 7 wherein the forming step is one of solution casting or melt processing.
9. A polymeric greenhouse cladding material, coating or film comprising a compound obtainable according to the method of claim 6 and exhibiting strong absorbance selectively in the 700 nm to 800 nm region.

A film for controlling heat build up in a greenhouse by reducing transmission of light in the near to infra red region whilst exhibiting a high transmission of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) (wavelength 400 nm to 700 nm approximately) and comprising a laminate wherein at least one layer is a polymeric film which contains a dispersion of gas bubbles having a size predominantly in the range of 50 ym to 500 ym as determined by microscopic examination in the plane of the film.
11. A film according to claim 10 comprising at least three layers wherein the outer surface layers are formed from an extruded plastics material and at least one layer in between contains a dispersion of gas bubbles.
12. A film according to claim 10 or 11 wherein gas bubbles are dispersed within the outer layers of the laminate to the same or a lesser degree than the layer in between.

A film according to any one of claims 10 to 12 wherein gas bubble dispersion is achieved (a) by incorporating air into the film production process or (b) by incorporating a chemical gassing agent into the components used to form the film or at an appropriate point during manufacture of the film whereby the said gassing agent reacts or decomposes to produce a gas which is inert with respect to the film e.g. N2 or C02 during the production of the film and whilst the film is still in a flowable condition, the resultant bubbles being confined within the film by entrapment as the film stabilises to its final usable form.
14. A film according to any one of claims 10 to 13 wherein the thickness of the film is in the range of from 100 ym to 300 ym.
15 A film according to any one of claims 10 to 13 wherein the thickness of the film is in the region of about 200 ym.
16. A film according to any one of claims 10 to 13 wherein the layer containing gas bubbles has a thickness of from 40 to 50 ym.
17. A film according to any one of claims 10 to 16 comprising a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate.
18. A film according to any one of claims 10 to 17 additionally comprising a phthalocyanine derivative of the general formula I defined hereinbefore.
19. A material for controlling plant growth, by selectively inhibiting the transmission of selected wavelengths in the region of from 700 nm to 800 nm of the electromagnetic spectrum whilst maintaining a PAR transmission of about 80% or higher, substantially as hereinbefore described.
20. A glazing or cladding material for inhibiting the build up of heat in a greenhouse whilst maintaining a PAR transmission of about 70% or higher substantially as hereinbefore described.
