Abstract

A wireless communications link for a portable computer 1 , comprises a first communicator 3, operating in accordance with a relatively low bandwidth GSM based mobile radio telephone system such as DCS 1800 or PCS 1900, to provide a first digital communications channel 3a, a second communicator 2, operating in accordance with the higher bandwidth Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB) system, based on the Eureka-147 standard, to provide a second digital communications channel 2a, and a data processor unit 15, arranged to operate in combination with the first and the second communicators, which transmits the portable computer's data requests to the internet via the first communications channel 3a and receives internet data via the second communications channel 2a, thereby providing the portable computer with a low bit rate channel for communicating its limited instructions to an internet supplier and a high bit rate channel for downloading large data files from the supplier.
