Abstract

A low pressure steam generator, for a steam iron or garment press, comprises a tubular container 10 with heated walls. Water is sprayed in fine droplets onto the walls and issues as steam out of an outlet 12. The container is heated electrically by element 11, or by solid fuel or in a furnace (Fig 3). The supply to inlet 13 has manual valve, pressure relief valve, filter and water softener. Outlet 12 has a valve controlled by a pressure responsive switch.

Description

STEAM GENERATORS The invention relates to steam generators.

The invention relates more particularly to steam generators for use in processing and treating materials and fabrics and not for use in creating driving power.

The invention is therefore concerned with providing steam at zero pressure or at least fairly low pressure. Steam at low pressure is already used and provided in association with clothes pressing irons and fabric shape forming apparatus, for example. Steam is normally generated by exposing a reservoir of water to heat so that the water boils and gives off steam via some outlet of the reservoir that communicates with atmosphere. It is also known, but normally for producing a supply of hot water, to run a volume of water rapidly through a length of externally heated coils. In these examples above there is always a requirement for a significant quantity of hot water to be used and stored at any time which requires very sound containment to avoid any sudden uncontrolled free distribution and possible danger to surrounding users of appliances.

It is an object of the invention to overcome or at least reduce this problem.

According to the invention there is provided a steam generator comprising a container having an out let for steam and having at least one wall arranged to be heated and maintained at a comparatively high temperature, a container water inlet for receiving a supply of water which is arranged to spray water onto the heated surface in a fine spray.

The at least one wall may be arranged to be electrically heated.

The steam generator may include a manually operable water valve in communication with the water inlet.

Where the container is fully enclosed, an automatic pressure controlled outlet for the steam may be provided.

A pressure sensitive water control valve at the water inlet which controls flow of water into the generator may also be provided.

Steam generators according to the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying schematic drawings in which : Figure 1 is a sectional view of a generator; Figure 2 is a sectional view of another generator; Figure 3 is a sectional view of a further generator: Figure 4 is a line view of yet a further generator; Figure 5 is a line view of another generator; and Figures 6a, 6b and 6c show line views of applications for embodiments of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, in Figure 1 the generator comprises a relatively thick tubular metallic container 10 with a surrounding electric heating element 11 and a steam outlet 12. In use, water is supplied to the inside of the container via a nozzle 13 which forms the incoming water into a fine spray. Spray droplets are converted immediately into steam as they touch or come into close contact with the heated walls of the container. Steam flows out of the outlet 12 for use in various appliances as required.

In Figure 2, a container 14 comprises an open ended tube and the open end provides a simple outlet for steam produced by heated walls of the container. The steam generator in Figure 3 is similar to the container in Figure 1 except walls of the container are arranged to be heated by solid fuel or by placing the container between walls of a small furnace as shown.

In Figure 4. a water supply for the steam generator is provided from a water reservoir <RTI>16</RTI> supplied with compressed air by an air line 17. An automatic pressure relief valve 18 is used to maintain the water pressure at a spray head 19 at some required predetermined pressure.

A manual valve 20 allows the generator to be turned ON and OFF.

In Figure 5, a container 21 of the generator is provided with a steam outlet valve 22 that is opened automatically when the steam pressure in the container 21 reaches a predetermined, albeit relatively low, pressure. The valve 22 is controlled by a pressure sensitive switch 23. Water inlet pressure is also controlled by a pressure sensitive switch 24 and the pressure is set, in relation to the steam pressure, so that once the steam generator has reached a normal operating conditions a constant flow of steam outlets from the container 21 automatically.

In Figures 6a, 6b and 6c some typical and suitable applications are shown for steam generators of the invention. Figure 6a shows a steam iron, Figure 6b shows a buck press, and Figure 6c shows a pocket pressing machine. In all cases, the steam is provided at low pressure, and therefore a generally safe pressure and no significant quantities of very hot water need to be stored or used. The compartments themselves of the generators are designed to operate safely even when no water is flowing into them and typically are externally insulated in practice to prevent any possible contact with heated exposed surfaces by users of the appliances. As it has been mentioned already, steam is generated only when water is supplied to the containers and the water supply can be manually and/or automatically controlled. Normally, the quantity or flow of outlet steam is simply controlled by the amount of the flow of water into the container. For better control, an automatic pressure outlet valve and usually an automatic water inlet valve is used, as shown in Figure 5 for example.

It is preferably to filter and soften the water before it flows into the containers, so as to reduce or prevent corrosion or scaling of the inside surfaces of the containers.

Claims (6)

1. A steam generator comprising a container having an outlet for steam and having at least one wall arranged to be heated and maintained at a comparatively high temperature, a container water inlet for receiving a supply of water which is arranged to spray water onto the heated surface in a fine spray.
2. A steam generator according to claim 1, in which the at least one wall is arranged to be electrically heated.
3. A steam generator according to claim 1 or 2, including a manually operable water valve in communication with the water inlet.
4. A steam generator according to any one of claims 1 to 3, in which the container is fully enclosed and has an automatic pressure controlled outlet for the steam.
5. A steam generator according to claim 4, including a pressure sensitive water control valve at the water inlet which controls flow of water into the generator.
6. A steam generator according to any one of claims 1 to 5, including an inlet water filter and water softener.
