The torque limiting means includes a multi-plate coupling 24,25 associated with an adjustable nut 27 and a Belville spring 30. A protective cover 31 cooperates with a seal 33.
Description
Title: Transmission protection device
Description of Invention
The invention relates to a transmission protection device, and more particularly but not exclusively to a device which prevents transmission of excessive torque to a ground engaging drive wheel.
When a vehicle is originally designed, the transmission system is designed to cope with transmitting the torque provided by the engine originally fitted. However, it is relatively common for engines originally fitted in vehicles to be replaced with higher powered engines capable of producing higher torque. In some cases, this can lead to failure in the transmission system, for example, by stripping gears in differentials or shearing half shafts.
According to the invention there is provided a transmission protection device for a vehicle comprising means for transmitting torque from an input member to an output member wherein the transmission protection device is adapted to transmit a predetermined maximum torque and if the torque applied via the input member exceeds that predetermined maximum to transmit a proportion of that torque to the output member.
Hence the transmission protection device helps prevent the failure of any transmission components when a higher power and torque engine is fitted to a vehicle following manufacture.
Preferably the output member comprises a wheel huh and groundengaging wheel.
Preferably the means for transmitting torque comprises at least one drive member connected for rotation with the input member, at least one driven member connected for rotation with the output member and engagement means which, when the torque applied is less than the predetermined maximum, provides for rotation of the output member with the input member and when the torque applied is greater than the predetermined maximum the engagement means allows rotation of the input member relative to the output member.
The drive and driven members connected for rotation with the input and output members may comprise co-axial elements, and the engagement means may comprise friction material between the drive and driven members, and a spring means, such as a Belville spring, urging the drive and driven means together.
The properties of the spring means may be selected to provide the predetermined maximum torque.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a vehicle comprising at least one transmission protection device according to the first aspect of the invention.
Preferably a vehicle is provided which comprises a transmission protection device at each drive wheel.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 illustrates a transmission protection device according to the invention in cross section, and
FIGURE 2 illustrates the transmission protection device of Figure 1 on a larger scale.
A vehicle (not shown) comprises an axle having an axle housing 10 with an input member, in the form of a half shaft 11 therein. An output member comprises a wheel hub 12 is mounted for rotation on the axle housing 10 by means of wheel bearings 13. The output member further comprises a groundengaging wheel 14 fixed to the wheel hub 12 by means of wheel nuts 15, the wheel 14 bearing a tyre 16.
Drive is transmitted from the half shaft 11 to the wheel huh 12 and thus to the wheel 14 via a transmission protection device 17. The transmission protection device 17 comprises a casing 18 fixed to the wheel hub 12 by means of bolts 19. Thus the casing 18 rotates with the wheel hub 12. The transmission device 17 further comprises a core 20 connected to the half shaft 11 by means of splines 21 and retained in position by means of a cap 22 located over the end of the half shaft 11, and a bolt 23 retaining the cap in position. The transmission protection device 17 further comprises drive members in the form of a first set of friction discs 24 connected for rotation with the casing 18, and driven members in the form of a second set of friction discs 25 connected for rotation with the core 20.The first and second sets of friction discs 24,25, are co-axial and are interleaved with each other. On the outer side of the first and second set of friction discs 24,25, is an annular disc 26 which is retained in position by a tensioning nut 27 which is located on a screw thread 28 on the core 20. On the inner side of the first and second sets of friction discs 24,25, a spring means in the form of a Belville spring 30 is located between the core 20 and an annular plate 29 adjacent to the sets of discs 24,25. The Belville spring 30 urges the first and second sets of friction discs 24,25, together to preload the transmission protection device 17 such that drive is transmitted from the half shaft 11 to the wheel hub 12 and thus to the wheel 14.
The transmission protection device further comprises a protective cover 31 which is a screw fit into the outer end of the casing 18 on screw thread 32. The cover 31 includes an annular seal 33 which seals to the casing 18.
The properties of the Belville spring 28 are selected such that, in normal use, all the torque applied via the half shaft 11 is transmitted to the wheel 14 via the wheel hub 12. However, if the torque applied exceeds a predetermined maximum, the transmission protection device 17 slips, permitting relative rotation between the half shaft 11 and wheel huh 12 and thus only transmitting a proportion of the torque applied.
The predetermined maximum torque at which the transmission protection device 17 slips, is determined by the properties of the Belville spring 30 and by the tensioning applied via the tensioning nut 27.
Alternative embodiments of transmission protection devices according to the invention may be constructed incorporating spring means in the form of two or more Belville springs or any other appropriate form. In addition, although the transmission protection device 17 described above takes the form of a multidisc friction unit, alternative forms of transmission protection device according to the invention may be constructed.
Although the transmission protection device 17 described above is permanently engaged, embodiments may also be constructed which are adapted to be disengaged to provide for free wheeling hubs if required.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description the following claims or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, or a class or group of substances or compositions, as appropriate, may, separately, or in any combination of such features, he utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.
