Abstract

A replaceable tapered anode is characterised in that the diameter at the connection to the vessel is of sufficient thickness/diameter that whilst preferentially corroding to the cylinder/vessel the integrity of the support is always maintained.

Description

TAPERED SACRIFICIAL ANODE This invention relates to: a. A replaceable tapered sacrificial anode.
b. A replaceable tapered sacrificial anode which can be condition monitored.
Sacrificial anodes are widely used particularly in hot water storage cylinder/vessels in both domestic and industrial situations.
Sacrificial anodes predominantly comprise of an aluminium rod of equal cross sectional area bent into a circular ring1 the ring being supported by a single rod of the same cross sectional area which is attached to the base of the cylinder/vessel at a single point.
The present anode arrangement quite often shortens the life of the cylinders/vessels rather than prolonging their life.
The reason for this is that the supporting member corrodes at a greater rate than the anode in consequence the unsupported anode falls into the base of the cylinder/vessel. When lying in the base of the cylinder/vessel the anode develops several points of contact which create an electrolytic action thus promoting accelerated corrosion of both the anode and the cylinder/vessel.
This process can be interpreted as anodic, galvanic or pitting corrosion.
The invention provides preferential deterioration to the anode to protect the vessel. However the anode being of a tapered section with the widest part being sited at the connection to the cylinder/vessel ensures that it does not become detached from the main structure thus providing the essential protection to the cylinder/vessel in which it is sited.
The invention also provides a simple method of testing the level of deterioration of the anode/rod whilst in situ. This will in turn provide a good indication as to the condition of the cylinder/vessel being protected.
Continuous condition monitoring could be easily applied if necessary.
Fig 1. Shows an indirect hot water cylinder with a conventional anode.

Shows an indirect hot water cylinder with a tapered sacrificial anode.
Item 1 = Cold feed connection Item 2 = Secondary hot water flow connection Item 3 = Hot water heating coil Item 4 = Primary flow connection item 5 = Primary Return connection Item 6 = Tapered sacrificial anode inside vessel or cylinder Item 7 = Electrical isolator between test wire and vessel wall Item 8 = Electrical test connection Item 9 = Electrical isolator between test wire and vessel wall Item 10 = Electrical test connection To determine the level of deterioration of the anode a low voltage electrical supply is applied between terminals 8 & 9, if electrical continuity is proven then that section of the anode has not deteriorated.
If continuity is not proven between terminals 8 & 9 then that section of the anode will have deteriorated.
A further test can be carried out by applying an electrical continuity test between terminals 8 & the cylinder/vessel, if electrical continuity is proven then that section of the anode has not deteriorated.
If electrical continuity is not proven then that section of the anode has deteriorated and the anode must be replaced.
