Abstract

A dual-purpose bag comprises front and rear reinforced padded panels 12, 28 joined to another along a fold line at the base of the bag and releasable closure means 24, 26 extending along the two side edges of the panels. The closure means, such as zip fasteners, serve to form a bag closed on three sides and having a mouth defined by the upper edges of the front and the rear panels 12, 28. A closure flap joined along a fold line to the upper edge of the rear panel 28 can be releasably fastened to the front 12 panel to cover the mouth of the bag. A pair of straps 20, 22 extend from the lateral ends of the closure flap or from the sides of the back panel 28 to the two sides of the front panel 12 to hold the padded panels at angle to one another when the closure means are opened, so that the bag may be used as a seat with the padded panels acting respectively as a seat cushion and a back support. <IMAGE>

Description

DUAL-PURPOSE BAG The present invention relates to a dual-purpose bag.
According to the present invention, there is provided a dual-purpose bag comprising front and rear reinforced padded panels joined to another along a fold line at the base of the bag, releasable closure means extending along the two side edges of the panel, the closure means serving to form a bag closed on three sides and having a mouth defined by the upper edges of the front and the rear panel, a closure flap joined along a fold line to the upper edge of the rear panel and releasably fastened to the front panel to cover the mouth of the bag, and a pair of straps extending from the lateral ends of the closure flap or from the sides of the back panel to the two sides of the front panel to hold the padded panels at angle to one another when the closure means are opened, whereby the bag may be used as a seat with the padded panels acting respectively as a seat cushion and a back support.
Preferably, the closure means are constituted by zip fasteners to allow the bag to be converted rapidly from a carrier to a seat.
Conveniently, the straps are adjustable in length to allow the angle of the back support to be adjusted.
Advantageously, the cover flap may be folded when the bag is used as a seat to overlie the rear surface of the rear panel to give added strength and improved back support.
The padding of the front and rear panels is provided for comfort while the reinforcing of the panels serves to provide improved body support and to prevent the seat from wrapping itself around the occupant.
The invention will now be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a front view of a dual-purpose bag of the invention, Figure 2 shows a perspective view of the bag of Figure 1 in an open position, and Figure 3 shows a side view of the bag of Figure 1 when opened to act as a seat.
The bag 10 in the drawings comprises a front panel 12 and a back panel 28 connected to one another by a fold line at the lower edges and having zip fasteners 24 and 24 along their side edges. A closure flap 18 is provided at the top of the back panel 28 which can close the mouth of the bag, as shown in Figure 1. A Velcro RTM fastener may be provided to close the flap 18 over the mouth of the bag.
To allow the bag to be carried in this condition, a shoulder strap 16 of adjustable length is fitted to the side edges of the back panel 28 and two further straps 20 and 22, described in more detail below, can be used a carrying handles.
When the zip fasteners 24 and 26 are opened, the bag can be used as a seat, in the manner shown in Figure 3. Here, the user sits on the front panel 12 and the back panel 28 acts as a back rest, the two panels being held at an angle to one another by the adjustable straps 20 and 22. The straps 20 and 22, which include releasable buckles 30a and 30b, are connected to the edges of the closure flap 18. When the bag is used as a seat, the closure flap 18 is folded back to reinforce the upper edge of the back panel that acts as a back rest.
The front and back panels 12 and 28 are both foam padded for comfort and they are reinforced for rigidity by rods retained in pockets 14 sown into the panels. The pockets 14 and reinforcement rods of the front panel extend parallel to and adjacent the side edges of the panel whereas the corresponding pockets in the back panel are preferably inclined so as to be closer to one another at the bottom that at the top of the back rest.
