Abstract
A mobile training rig comprises a wheeled rear chassis (10) releasably connected to a front chassis (14) which carries either a simulated aircraft or helicopter fuselage. The rear chassis typically carries supplies of fuel for creating fire conditions at the fuselage. The front chassis (14) typically has support jacks (15). Each chassis (10, 14) has a tow bar (17, 18). <IMAGE>
Description
Mobile Fire Fighting Training Rig
This invention relates to a Mobile Fire Fighting Training Rig for the smaller airfield.
Fire Fighting Training Rigs are quite common at training schools and larger airfields. They generally tend to be large heavy single units, bolted to concrete pads. These rigs are expensive to build, and being fixtures are only of use at that particular location on the airfield or training school. They are very good for training purposes, but do not fully reflect the different locations of possible aircraft crash sites on the particular airfield, or the wide variety of fire fighting equipment available to deal with the incident at different categories of airfield. In some cases the smaller airfields have little or no training equipment and have to make do with bonfires or burning tyres and as a result their personnel may have to be sent away to a larger airfield or training school.
Nowadays with the increasing use of the smaller airfields by both private planes and helicopters it would seem more beneficial to bring the rig to the airfield. It could then be set up at various sites around the airfield as agreed between the Fire Officer and the Airfield Manager. This would add more realism to the training at the airfield and response times could be noted.
According to the present invention there is provided a Mobile
Fire Fighting Training Rig, comprising a wheeled rear chassis with towbar. Two different types of front chassis are provided.
Number One is a multi-purpose unit simulating an aircraft.
Number Two is a multi-purpose unit simulating a helicopter. A means of releasably securing the rear chassis to the front chassis. A means of setting the front chassis to the desired height, angle or level. A means of transmitting fuel under pressure from the fuel tank to the rig. A means of having several different fire scenarios on the rig or any combination.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1: shows in front elevation the aeroplane rig complete.
Figure 2: shows in front elevation the separation of front and
rear chassis.
Figure 3: shows in front elevation the aeroplane rig set up on
sloping ground and ready for training to commence.
Figure 4: shows in front elevation the helicopter simulated
front chassis set up with the helicopter in the
upright position.
Figure 5: shows in front elevation the helicopter simulated
front chassis set up with the helicopter rotated
longitudinally through ninety degrees.
Referring to the drawings the Mobile Fire Fighting Training Rig comprises a wheeled rear chassis 10 complete with its own fuel supply tank 11 air bottles 12 controls and fuel line 19. This rear chassis is releasably secured to either of the two types of front chassis 14 provided by bolts clips or similar means (not shown). Number One is a multi-purpose unit simulating an aircraft: fuselage, wing, wing flap, engine, undercarriage and firewall, as illustrated in Figure 2. Number Two is a multipurpose unit simulating a helicopter: fuselage 21, engine, fuel tank and firewall with the ability to be rotated longitudinally through ninety degrees from the vertical, as illustrated in
Figure 4 and 5. Four heavy duty jacks 15 are provided three on the front chassis and one on the rear chassis. Four extending legs 16 are provided on the front chassis and a towbar 17.An extending towbar 18 is provided on the rear chassis with locking pins. On the helicopter front chassis Figure 4 and 5 the helicopter fuselage 21 is releasably secured to the main front chassis 14 by bolts, clips or other means. The fuselage is capable of being rotated longitudinally through ninety degrees and secured at various angles with clips, bolts or other means.
On the front of both types of chassis a take off manifold complete with control taps is provided to enable single or multiple fire scenarios to be used for training.
In order to set the rig up on site the front of the rig is raised by means of the front screw jack 15 and the towing vehicle (tractor, lorry) is unhitched. The rear jack 15 is screwed down and the means of securing the two chassis is released. The towing vehicle is then hitched onto the extended rear towbar 18 and the jack is screwed up. The rear chassis is then towed upwind to a safe distance.
The front chassis rig 14 is then set to the required height, slope or level by means of all three screw jacks 15. The adjustable legs 16 are then extended and fixed. The jacks are screwed up far enough to release the weight of the rig onto the legs. If the helicopter rig is used the setting up procedure is exactly the same, as the rear chassis is common to both rigs and therefore interchangeable. Figure 4 shows the rig set up with the helicopter fuselage 21 in the upright position. The securing method is then released and the fuselage rotated physically to the ninety degree position as illustrated in
Figure 5. The fuel line 19 is connected to the manifold 20 and the controls are set at the manifold to give whichever fire scenario is required for training. The rig is then ready to be set on fire.
To reassemble the rig the above steps are carried out in reverse sequence.
