Abstract

A safety/security barrier includes doors, (2, Figure 2) and an adjuster or ramp 1, which may be fitted to the edge of the platform in railway stations. The doors of the safety/security barrier open and close simultaneously with the train doors. The ramp fitted inside the safety/security barrier doors has one edge level with the platform and has the opposite edge level with the floor of the train 1 and is extendable and retractable in use. Preferably the barrier has communication, direction information and may store emergency equipment. <IMAGE>

Description

SAFETY/SECURITY BARRIER This invention relates to a safety/security barrier which may be erected on the edge of the railway platform nearest the area where the train arrives and departs.
Platforms on some recently erected stations are designed so that passengers on the platform cannot be in contact with moving trains or with the rails carrying electric current. Easy access for passengers with wheeled vehicles is possible as the train floor and the platform is on the same level.
On older style rail stations passengers on the platforms are exposed to the risk of injuries arising from accidental contact with moving trains or with the rail carrying the electric current. Access to the train is restricted as the train floor and the platform are on different levels. In some stations there is a wide space between the platform and the train. This is dangerous for passengers entering the train. The unprotected rails are also a possible target for vandals.
An object of this invention is to provide a safety/security barrier which protects the passengers on the platform from touching a moving train or an electric rail track and to provide easy access for passengers with wheeled vehicles.
Accordingly, this invention provides a safety/security barrier including doors, the means of opening and closing the doors simultaneously with the train doors, if appropriate, and an adjuster which reduces the distance between the train and the platform and which extends to the level of the train, the means of extending and retracting the adjuster.
The safety/security barrier may be made of steel and glass or other suitable material.
The edge of the adjuster nearest the train may be fitted with rubber or with other suitable material.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE 1 shows a view of the train and the safety/security barrier fitted with an adjuster.
FIGURE 2 shows a front view of the safety/security barrier.
Figure 1 shows the safety/security barrier fitted to the edge of the platform next to the train with an adjuster fitted inside the doors of the safety/security barrier at platform level 1. The adjuster extends towards the train. The edge nearest the train to be on the same level as the train floor. The adjuster may be fixed permanently or be fitted to operate automatically so that it extends towards the train before the doors open and then retracts after the doors close.
Figure 2 shows the safety/security barrier fitted with doors and windows which register with the doors and windows of the train 2.
Ventillation facilities are fitted over the safety/security barrier or at other suitable positions 3. An electronic information strip facilitating changing information to be fitted along the top of the safety/security barrier 4. Video viewing devices fitted at an angle and spaced throughout the length of the safety/security barrier 5. Safety/security barrier supports fitted with equipment for making announcements to passengers 6 Facilities for transmitting information as appropriate 7. Facilities for storage of emergency equipment where required 8.
Crowd control barriers to be fitted on the platform at suitable positions 9. Colour coded directional strips, illuminated or otherwise, corresponding to the colour code used for particular lines to be fitted if appropriate on the platform and throughout the station 10. The barrier supports or other background parts to be painted in the same colour as the colour code appropriate to the particular line served by the platform on which the safety barrier is installed 11. Video security cameras to be fitted in appropriate positions on the platform to monitor the functioning of the safety and the train.
