Abstract

A liquid detergent composition which is of good cleaning power and which has good lathering performance comprises at least one alkyl sulphate having an alkyl group of 8 - 22 carbon atoms which provides more than 50% of anionic surfactant present in the composition, an amine oxide having at least one alkyl group of 8 - 22 carbon atoms in an amount less than the total amount of alkyl sulphate, and water. Additional surfactants may be betaines, alcohol ethoxylates or alkyl polyglycosides.

Description

DETERGENT FORMULATION The present invention relates to a detergent formulation intended particularly but not exclusively as a so-called 'washing-up' liquid for use in washing crockery, cutlery, pans and other domestic utensils which have been used in the preparation and/or consumption of food and which have deposits of food, grease, burnt residues etc.
f Purchasers of 'washing-up' liquids generally regard two particular properties as being of importance. One is that a relatively small quantity of the liquid will suffice for washing a particular number of utensils. In other words, the purchasers like to feel that the liquid is economical to use. The other property is that the liquid generates a relatively large volume of suds (i.e. the liquid has a good lathering characteristics) since it is generally assumed that such suds contribute to the efficiency of the liquid.
According to the present invention there is provided a liquid detergent composition which comprises at least one alkyl sulphate having an alkyl group of 8-22 carbon atoms which provides more than 50% of anionic surfactant present in the composition, an amine oxide having at least one alkyl group of 8-22 carbon atoms in an amount less than the total amount of alkyl sulphate, and water.
The invention has been based on our finding that the combined use of the alkyl sulphate and amine oxide surprisingly gives a composition of improved cleaning and lathering performance as compared to prior art compositions containing the same or higher amounts of detergent active material. Furthermore, the improved performance of compositions in accordance with the invention may be achieved without the use of LABS (linear alkyl benzene sulphonic acid - usually present in a detergent formulation as the sodium salt) with its allegedly poor biodegradability) or diethanolamides (which are associated with nitrosamines).
The composition of the invention includes at least one C8-22 alkyl sulphate. The total amount of alkyl sulphate present in the composition is at least 50% of the total amount of anionic surfactant present in the composition. The total amount of alkyl sulphate may, for example, be at least 70% (more preferably at least 90%) by weight of the anionic surfactant present. The alkyl sulphate may be the sole anionic surfactant present.
Generally the amount of alkyl sulphate will be at least 20%, of the total amount of surfactant present. More preferably the amount of alkyl sulphate is at least 30%, e.g. at least 40%, on the same basis.
Generally the amount of alkyl sulphate will not exceed 60% by weight of the total surfactant present.
Most preferably the alkyl group of the alkyl sulphate has 8-16 carbon atoms.
A preferred alkyl sulphate is one based on the alkyl chain length distribution found in coconut oil. It is however possible to use alkyl sulphates derived from other natural products, in which case the chain length distribution of the alkyl group will correspond to that in the natural product from which the alkyl groups are derived.
It is, of course, also possible that the alkyl sulphate is produced synthetically.
Detergent compositions in accordance with the invention may include an alkyl sulphate (or mixture thereof) as the sole surfactant.
Alternatively additional surfactants may be incorporated.
Compositions in accordance with the invention will generally contain not more than a total of 80% by weight of detergent active material, more usually less than 50%, and typically less than 40% on the same basis. Good cleaning and lathering performance can be obtained with less than 30% by weight detergent active, e.g. in the range 25-30%.
Examples of additional surfactants which may be included are amphoteric, non-ionic and/or anionic surfactants other than alkyl sulphates, although as indicated above LABS and diethanolamides will generally not be used.
Examples of amphoteric surfactants which may be included may be mentioned betaines which are either of the formula (I) or (II)
In the above formula, R1 and R2 may be the same or different C14 alkyl groups whereas R3 is an alkyl group having 8-22 carbon atoms, e.g. derived from coconut oil.
The amount of betaine (if present) will generally be less than half the amount of alkyl sulphate in the composition.
Examples of non-ionic surfactants which may be used include alcohol ethoxylates (preferably linear alcohol ethoxylates) in which the alkyl group has 8-22 carbon atoms, e.g. 12-15 carbon atoms and in which the degree of ethoxylation is 5-15 (e.g. 7-10). The ethoxylate, if present, will generally be used in an amount of 60%-90% that of the alkyl sulphate. Further examples of non-ionic surfactants include alkyl polyglycosides, amounts of which will (for reasons of economy) generally be less than 10% of that of the alkyl sulphate.
The alkyl amine oxide which is present in the composition of the invention preferably has one C8-22 alkyl group and two C14 alkyl groups. Most preferably the latter alkyl groups are methyl groups.
referred amine oxides are therefore (long chain) alkyl dimethyl amine oxides. The long chain alkyl group may, for example, have 8-16 carbon atoms and be derived from coconut.
The amount of amine oxide present in the composition is less than the amount of alkyl sulphate. Generally the amount of amine oxide will be less than half that of the alkyl sulphate, e.g. less than a third.
The formulation of the invention may also include a hydrotrope, a suitable example of which is sodium xylene sulphonate. The amount of hydrotrope will generally be less than half that of the alkyl sulphate, more usually less than a third.
The invention will be illustrated by the following non-limiting Example.
Example A detergent composition was formulated by blending the following components in the amounts indicated: Component % by weight Sodium Alkyl (Cl2~l4) Sulphate 11.80 Linear Alcohol (Cl2~l5) Ethoxylate 8.60 Cocoamidopropyl Betaine 3.75 Sodium Xylene Sulphonate 2.60 Alkyl (Cl2~l4) Dimethyl Amine Oxide 2.40 Alkyl(C12-14) Polyglycoside 0.95 Preservative, dye, perfume minor addition Water qs to 100 The above formulation was compared for its effectiveness in washing plates and its foaming (lathering) properties with a prior art formulation of the following composition.

Similarly the lathering performance was judged by a standard "flash foam" test giving the height of the lather produced under standard conditions. The results were as follows: Plates Washed Flash Foam (mm) Invention 21 130 Prior Art 19 95 It can be seen from the above results that the composition of the invention gave better plate wash performance. Not only was the performance better, but it was achieved using less total amounts of surfactant (27% in the composition of the invention as compared to 37% in the prior art formulation).
It will also be appreciated from the table that the composition of the invention gave excellent performance on flash foam and foam stability.

Claims (16)

1. A liquid detergent composition which comprises at least one alkyl sulphate having an alkyl group of 8-22 carbon atoms which provides more than 50% of anionic surfactant present in the composition, an amine oxide having at least one alkyl group of 8-22 carbon atoms in an amount less than the total amount of alkyl sulphate, and water.
2. A composition as claimed in claim 1 containing a total of less than 40% by weight of detergent active material.
3. A composition as claimed in claim 2 comprising 25%-30% by weight of detergent active material.
4. A composition as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the total amount of alkyl sulphate is at least 70% by weight of the total anionic surfactant present.
5. A composition as claimed in claim 4 wherein the total amount of alkyl sulphate is at least 90% by weight of the total anionic surfactant present.
6. A composition as claimed in claim 5 wherein the alkyl sulphate is substantially the only anionic surfactant present.
7. A composition as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the alkyl sulphate is at least 20% by weight of the total weight of detergent active material.
8. A composition as claimed in claim 7 wherein the alkyl sulphate is at least 30% by weight of the total weight of detergent active material.
9. A composition as claimed in claim 8 wherein the alkyl sulphate at at least 40% by weight of the total weight of detergent active material.
10. A composition as claimed in claim 7 wherein the amount of alkyl sulphate does not exceed 60% by weight of thZ total detergent active material.
11. A composition as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 10 wherein the alkyl sulphate has an alkyl chain length! distribution based on that found in coconut oil.
12. A composition as claimed in any only of claims 1 to 11 additionally comprising amphoteric, non-ioni and/or other anionic surfactants.
13. A composition as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 12 wherein the alkyl amine oxide has one C6~22 alkyl group and two C14 alkyl groups.
14. A composition as claimed in claim 13 wherein the long chain alkyl group has 8-16 carbon atoms.
15. A composition as claimed in any one oi claims 1 to 14 wherein the amount of amine oxide is less than half thlat of the alkyl sulphate.
16. A composition as claimed in claim 15 wherein the amount of amine oxide is less than a third that of the alkyl sulphate.
