Abstract

A flip top cigarette packet has a separately formed storage compartment for matches. When packaged, cigarettes are contained in a compartment and a box of matches G in a separate compartment formed by a bottom panel 4, front panel 5, a back panel and two side panels 6L and 6R. To gain access to the matches, panels X and Y are removed along lines of weakness formed by perforated lines. The igniting surface for the matches can be positioned on any of the faces of the carton; preferably, the packaged match box has the igniting surface adhered to its outer sleeve and access to this is gained via a cut out window on the back panel. Alternatively, the match box may be accommodated within the flip top lid B. <IMAGE>

Description

CIGARETTE CARTON The invention relates to a cigarette carton with a flip top lid and more particularly to a cigarette carton constructed in such a way that a box of matches is integrally housed in a cigarette carton, thereby providing the user of the cigarettes not only with a means to store the cigarettes but also with a means to light the cigarettes in the same carton.
Flip top cartons are commonly used as packaging for cigarettes. Known cartons comprise two parts, one part being the carton box and the other part being an insert which acts to retain the flip top lid when it is closed. Both elements form a box with only one storage compartment for cigarettes.
An advantage of the present invention is the ease of manufacturing an integral carton for both cigarette and matches by utilising a flip top carton to form two separate storage compartments, one for cigarettes and one for a box of matches.
Two embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of the carton blank of the first embodiment, Figure 2 is a perspective view of the erect carton of figure 1, Figure 3 is a perspective view of the erect carton of figure 1 with the flip top lid open and the tear off panels removed exposing the compartment for the match box with the drawer of the match box open, Figure 4 -is an exploded perspective view of the carton of figure 1 showing the packaged contents, Figure 5 is a plan view of the carton blank of the second embodiment, Figure 6 is a perspective view of the erect carton of figure 5.
The cigarette carton with a separate storage compartment for a box of matches of the first embodiment comprises a plurality of carton panels to form the carton box. Figure 3 shows a perspective view of the invention. The carton A is mainly divided into a flip top cap B a cigarette chamber C to accommodate a number of cigarettes enveloped in a wrapper D, an insert E to retain the flip top lid when closed, a storage compartment F for a box of matches G containing a sliding drawer H containing a number of matches.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the present invention, illustrating that a cigarette carton may be integrally formed or manufactured with a storage compartment for cigarettes, a storage compartment for a box of matches and flip top cap in a single pattern according to the present invention. For the first embodiment of the invention a detailed explanation of the cap is omitted, since the construction thereof is well known and relatively simple as observed from the Figures.
A back panel 1 extends from the flip top cap by a fold line 1TF and has a predetermined height 1 LF and a predetermined width 1 BF, where the height and width are established considering the number and length of the cigarettes to be contained. At both sides of the back panel 1 a pair of sides 2L and 2R extend outward. The side panels are each folded along fold lines 1 LF and 1 RF at a right angle relative to the back panel 1. A pair of bottom reinforcing panels 3L and 3R extend from the lower part of each of the side panels 2L and 2R, with the bottom reinforcing panels being separated from the side panels 2L and 2R by fold lines 2LF and 2RF respectively and not otherwise connected to the back panel 1. The bottom reinforcing panels are folded to form right angles with respect to the side panels 2L and 2R.Depending on the packaging methods adopted, the reinforcing panels 3L and 3R can be omitted.
The bottom panel 4, which extends from the lower part of the back panel 1, is folded along line 1 BF to form a right angle with respect to the back panel 1.
The front panel 5, which extends from the lower part of the bottom panel 4, is folded along a fold line 5TF to a right angle relative to the bottom panel 4.
A pair of front side panels 6L and 6R extend from both sides of the front panel 5, separated from the front panel by fold lines 5LF and 5RF. The front side panels 6L and 6R are each folded along fold lines 5LF and 5RF respectively, to form a right angle with respect to the front panel 5 and then secured to the corresponding panels 2L and 2R.
Cut lines 1 LC and 1 RC on the back panel 1 enable the cap B to be opened more readily along the fold line 1 TF.
With the carton packaged as shown in Figure 2, the two small tear off panels X and Y conceal the packaged match box stored in compartment F. To gain access to the matches the panels X and Y are removed along the lines of weakness formed by perforated lines X1 & X2 and Y1 & Y2 respectively. The igniting friction surface for the matches can be positioned on any of the faces of the carton, preferably, the packaged match box has the igniting surface adhered to its outer sleeve G, this been the conventional form and access to this is gained via the cut out window 1 A on the back panel 1.
The second embodiment is a flip top cigarette carton, which houses a match box within the confines of the panels forming the flip top cap. For the second embodiment of the invention a detailed explanation of the formation of the cigarette storage compartment will not be described as it can be observed from the Figures. The same reference numerals/ letters will be used where applicable.
The back panel 8 of the flip top cap B extends from panel 1 and is separated by a fold line 1TF. At both sides of panel 8 a pair of side panels 9L and 9R extend outward. The side panels 9L and 9R are folded along fold lines 8LF and 8RF at a right angle relative to the back panel 8. A pair of top reinforcing panels 10L and 1 OR extend from the upper part of each of the side panels 9L and 9R, with the top reinforcing panels separated from the side panels by fold lines 10LF and 10RF and not otherwise connected to panel 8. The top reinforcing panels are folded to form right angles with respect to the side panels 9L and 9R. Depending on the packaging methods adopted, the reinforcing panels 1 OL and 1 OR can be omitted.
The reinforcing panel 14 is folded over along the fold line 12TF to join the front panel 12 of the flip top lid. The top panel 11, which extends from the upper part of the back panel 8, is folded along line 8TF to form a right angle with respect to the back panel 8. The front panel 12, of the cap which extends from the upper part of the top panel 11, is folded along a fold line 1 1TF to a right angle relative to the top panel 11.
A pair of front side panels 13L and 13R extend from both sides of the front panel 12, separated from the front panel 12 by fold lines 12LF and 12RF. The front side panels 1 3L and 1 3R are each folded along fold lines 1 2LF and 1 2RF respectively, to form a right angle with respect to the front panel 12 and then secured to the corresponding panels 9L and 9R.
To again access to the matches the same procedures are followed as outlined in the first embodiment, however, access to the igniting friction surface on the match box is gained via the cut out window 8A on the back panel 8 of the flip top lid.
