Abstract

A kit for applying zinc chloride flux to a joint to be soldered the kit comprising: (i) a first container containing material eg zinc chloride flux, to be applied by a brush (not shown in figure) and (ii) a second container comprising a lid (7) bearing a brush (5) and a body (1) into which the brush may be received, the container being sealed by the lid (7) so as to prevent escape of flux, when brush has been used in conjunction with flux. <IMAGE>

Description

FLUX BRUSH This invention relates to a brush with a container. More especially but not exclusively the invention relates to a brush with a container for use with flux.

Killed spirits which is to say zinc dissolved in hydrochloric acid is often used as a soldering flux where the joint may be washed after soldering. Killed spirits are extremely corrosive and thus if applied with a brush which is then replaced uncovered in a tool kit much equipment may be damaged. Many plumbers apply killed spirits with a finger which is dangerous, and painful if the finger is cut, or on a piece of rag which is discarded after use. Unfortunately the rag may not be to hand and no convenient place of disposal may be available.

The invention seeks to reduce these problems.

According to the invention there is provided a kit of parts comprising: i a first container containing material to be applied by brush ii a brush having a half fastener iii a second container having a half fastener complementary to the half fastener of the brush and adapted to receive the brush.

An embodiment of the invention will be described by reference to the accompanying figure which is an exploded view of a second container. The body 1 of the container is conveniently cylindrical and may be made of a plastics material such as nylon or of other materials not significantly attacked by the flux. One end 2 of the body is provided with a half fastener. In the embodiment shown the half fastener is a male thread. Angular or ovoid cross sections may be preferred since they reduce the likelihood of the container rolling off an inclined surface.

The other end 3 of the body may be permanently sealed or may be sealed with a cap 4. In some embodiments of the invention an extension of the body may be provided with a half-fastener complementary to the half fastener of the first container. This enables the lid of the first container to be mounted on the second container reducing the likelihood of loss of the lid.

The device of the invention is provided with a brush 5 having resilient bristles resistant to the flux. The brush may be moulded to stem 6 which carries on its end remote from the brush lid 7. Lid 7 is provided with a half fastener 8 complementary to the half fastener of the body. Other fasteners are usable for example the container end could be provided with a female thread and the lid with a male thread. In another embodiment the lid is driven into the open mouth of the tube. A resilient cap may be forced, in another embodiment, over a lip on the container body.

Preferably the brush and stem take up much, for example at least 75% of the volume of the container. The second container does not contain a significant supply of flux and may therefore be kept as small as possible consistent with ease of handling.

In use the lid 7 is removed complete with brush and inserted into a container of flux (not shown). In some embodiments each container is provided with the same half fastener. This allows the flux container lid to be secured to the first container to prevent it being lost.

Flux can then be painted on the joint which is then soldered. After use the brush and lid are replaced.

In the event that the brush of the body becomes clogged or dirty the apparatus may be dismantled for easy cleaning.

Those skilled will have little difficulty in devising other modifications or analogous uses. In particular other workman's requisites such as knotting can be stored in the container.

CLAIMS:
1. A kit of parts comprising: i a first container containing material to be applied by brush ii a brush having a half fastener iii a second container having a half fastener complementary to the half fastener of the brush and adapted to receive the brush.
2. A kit as claimed in claim 1 wherein in situ the brush occupies at least 50% of the volume of the second container.
3. A kit as claimed in claim I or claim 2 wherein the second container has two half fasteners each complementary to the half fasteners of the brush and the lid of the first container.
4. A kit as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the second container is of angular or ovoid cross section.
5. A kit as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the second container is cylindrical.
