Abstract

A control unit 6 senses movement of the load-shifting mechanism, eg the carrying forks 3 of a forklift truck 1 upwardly or downwardly on a support mast 2. When such movement occurs the control unit operates an audible or visual warning device eg in the form of a lamp unit 7 which acts as a warning to persons nearby that the carrying forks (and any load mounted thereon) are moving. The warning device may also be applied to skip lorries and tipper trucks. <IMAGE>

Description

Improvements relating to Vehicle Warning Devices The unloading or movement of loads carried by such vehicles as forklift trucks, skip lorries and tip-up trucks can create conditions of some danger to persons working around the vehicles. It is often the case that such vehicles may be operated to raise or lower a load by an operator who is unable to see beyond the load so that someone else could be struck by the load or part of the operating mechanism.
According to the present invention-there is provided a warning device for a vehicle which incorporates a load shifting mechanism, the warning device comprising an audible or visual alarm unit carried on a mounting for attachment to the vehicle, a control unit for operating the alarm unit and a control cable from the control unit for connection to the shifting mechanism to enable operation of the shifting mechanism to be detected by the control unit to trigger operation of the alarm unit.
When such a warning device is used on a vehicle of the type mentioned above, operation of the shifting mechanism will set off the alarm unit so that anyone in the vicinity of the equipment will be given a warning to stand clear.
The alarm unit can be arranged to emit an audible intermittent warning signal upon operation. Advantageously, such an alarm unit may be arranged to produce one or other of two distinct warning signals, dependent upon the direction of movement of the shifting mechanism. For instance, instance, it may be important for someone working around the equipment to know whether a load is being lifted or lowered (such as on a forklift truck). Alternatively or additionally the alarm unit could be arranged to produce a flashing, revolving or steady light upon operation. In such an arrangement the light could be housed within a lamp having two separate sections provided with direction indicators, one only of the sections being lit as dependent upon the direction of movement of the shifting mechanism.
Again, this could be used to indicate, for example, that the load is being either lifted or lowered.
The mounting could be in the form of a clip-on device or a fixing bracket or a magnetic mounting. In certain instances it may be feasible to make the mounting in the form of a stable base which can rest upon the load which is to be raised. Another possibility would be a suction pad for attachment to part of the equipment. The mounting could be formed at the end of a support arm leading to the alarm unit. This would enable an alarm device such as a flashing light to be more readily visible. The alarm unit could be flexibly attached to the end of the support arm of the unit so that it could move to some extent, if it hits an obstruction, without breaking the device.
The invention may be performed in various ways and a preferred embodiment will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrates a-forklift truck to which a warning device of this invention has been attached.
The forklift truck shown in the drawing comprises a control cab 1 provided with a support mast 2 on which is mounted the carrying forks 3 which can be raised up and down the mast 2. If a large load is carried by the forks then the operator within the cab 1 may have a very obstructed view and might not be aware of other persons working close to the forks. Consequently, when the forks are raised or lowered some injury could be caused.
In order to provide a warning to others that the forks have started to move, a warning device of this invention is mounted on the mast of the forklift truck. In this particular arrangement a mounting arm 4 is attached by clips 5 onto the top of the mast 2. At the far end of the mounting arm 4 there is a control unit 6 from which projects a lamp unit 7. A cable 8 runs from the control unit 6 down to the forks 3, the cable being attached at that end to a device which will register movement of the forks in either the upward or downward direction. When the control unit 6 senses such movement it will cause a flashing light 9A or 9B to be operated thus indicating whether the forks are being raised or lowered. The lamp portions 9A and 9B could carry indicator arrows 10. Alternatively, the lamp unit 7 could be replaced by an audible warning device such as a bleeper or siren. If desired, the audible warning could be of two types depending again on whether the forks are being raised or lowered. There are many known ways in which the movement of the forks relative to the mast 2 could be registered in order to be able to provide a suitable signal for the control unit 6.
Whilst the mounting arm 4 carrying the lamp unit 7 is shown extending horizontally from the mast 2 it will be appreciated that it could also be mounted to extend vertically. Furthermore, there could be a flexible connection of the arm 4 either to the mounting clips 5 or the lamp unit 7 to allow for a degree of movement if the projecting arm should hit an obstruction. Methods other than a mounting arm for mounting the lamp unit (or audible warning device) relative to the forklift truck may be employed.
It will be appreciated that such a warning device could equally be used on a skip lorry (such as to give a warning of the raising or lowering of a skip relative to the lorry) or on a tip-up truck (so as to give a warning, particularly, of when the tipping mechanism is operated to off-load materials carried by the truck).
