Abstract

A detent 2 retains a spring-loaded plunger 3 provided with a point 6. A balloon 7 is seated on a pressure plate 8 which is in turn mounted on air bellows 9 coupled to a sounder 10. The device can be mounted on the back of a door with the detent 2 coupled to a remote operating position. Release of the detent 2 allows the spring 4 to drive the plunger 3 into the balloon 7 causing a sound like a gunshot to be produced. The plunger then engages the pressure plate 8 causing the bellows 9 to be compressed and drive air through the sounder 10, causing a high pitched scream. <IMAGE>

Description

SECURITY DEVICE TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a security device which is intended to deter a potential thief in an attempted robbery.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention proposes a security device which can be triggered in the event of an attempted robbery to emit a bang and a scream, either in that order or reverse order.
In a shop or similar premises, the device may be installed on a door, or adjacent to a doorway. The device may be arranged to be operated remotely, e.g.
by a cashier or supervisor. Thus, should a potential robber enter the shop, the device can be operated to emit a bang like a gunshot and a scream-like sound behind the thief. In most cases this has the effect of startling the thief so that he will turn and run from the premises without proceeding further with the robbery.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The following description and the accompanying drawings referred to therein are included by way of non-limiting example in order to illustrate how the invention may be put into practice. In the drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional view of a security device of the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The illustrated device has a housing 1 having a mechanically or electrically released detent 2. The detent 2 retains a plunger 3 which is axially biassed by a compression spring 4 or other suitable means.
After passing through a guide 5, the leading end of the plunger 3 is provided with a point 6 which is poised over a balloon 7. The balloon is seated on a pressure plate 8 which is in turn mounted above air bellows 9.
A sounder 10 is coupled to one end of the bellows 9 such that air from the bellows can be forced through a reed or similar device in the sounder 10 and pass out of the housing 1.
In the example of shop premises, the device can bemounted on the back of a door with the detent 2 operably coupled to a convenient operating position, e.g. under the counter or adjacent to a till. Should a potential robber enter the premises, the detent 2 can be released by one of the staff, allowing the spring 4 to urge the plunger 3 rapidly towards the balloon 7.
The tip 6 thus punctured the balloon causing a sound like a gunshot to be produced. Upon further downward movement under the action of the spring 4, the plunger 3 engages the pressure plate 8 causing the bellows 9 to be compressed. Air is thus emitted through the sounder 10, causing a high pitched noise simulating the scream of a human female.
This will invariably startle the thief so that he will turn and flee the premises and the attempted robbery will thus be foiled.

Claims (10)

1. A security device which can be triggered in the event of an attempted robbery to emit a bang and a scream, either in that order or reverse order.
2. A device according to Claim 1, which includes an inflated balloon and means for bursting the balloon to produce the bang.
3. A device according to Claim 2, which includes a spring-loaded plunger for bursting the balloon.
4. A device according to any preceding claim, which includes a set of bellows arranged to drive air through a sounder to produce the scream.
5. A device according to Claim 4, in which the bellows are driven by a spring-loaded plunger.
6. A device according to any preceding claim, in which the scream is produced by a sounder which includes an air-driven reed.
7. A device according to Claim 3 or 6, in which the spring-loaded plunger is normally held against spring-loading by a remotely-operated detent.
8. A device according to any preceding claim, which is installed on a door, or adjacent to a doorway.
9. A device according to any preceding claim, in combination with means for operating the device from a remote location.
10. A security device substantially as described with reference to the drawings.
