Abstract

A cleaning device for gutterings comprises a blade (10) shaped to the section of the guttering to be cleaned and an arm (11) which is pivotally connected to the blade. The arm has a socket (12) to receive a handle and the blade defines a forwardly facing scraping edge (15) along its shaped edge and along a remaining edge, a lip (16) which acts to retain accumulated debris in front of the blade. <IMAGE>

Description

CLEANING DEVICES This invention relates to a cleaning device for use when cleaning accumulated dirt from gutterings and has for its object to provide such a device in a simple and convenient form.
According to the invention a cleaning device for the purpose specified comprises a scraping element having a shape corresponding to the crosssectional shape of the guttering to be cleaned, a support arm which at one end is pivotally connected to the scraping element and a handle or socket member mounted on the opposite end of the arm.
An example of a cleaning device in accordance with the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is an end elevation of the device, and Figure 2 is a side elevation.
As shown in the drawings the device comprises a scraping element in the form of a blade generally indicated at 10 which is formed from metal. The blade 10 has a shape corresponding to the cross-section of the guttering which is to be cleaned. The device also includes a support arm 11 which at one end is pivotally attached to the blade 10 and at its other end is secured to a socket member 12. Conveniently the socket member 12 is of hexagonal shape and the support arm 11 is of square section, the two components being butt welded together at or adjacent one end of the socket member 12. The socket member is provided with a stepped or tapered bore to receive a wooden or like elongated handle and it may be provided with a side aperture to receive a securing screw.
It will be understood that the socket member and arm could be formed in one piece as a die casting and in this case the socket member can have any convenient shape and the arm any convenient section.
The pivot axis of the pivotal connection 13 between the blade 10 and the arm 11 extends at right angles to the arm and to the plane of the blade and coincides with the centre line of the blade. The arm therefore extends in a plane parallel to the plane of the blade. Moreover, the axis is located as near as possible to the lower edge of the blade.
Conveniently the pivot axis is defined by a screw threaded bolt which extends through an aperture in the blade and the support arm. A self locking nut is engaged with the bolt and spring washers are located between the nut and the arm and between the head of the bolt and the blade respectively. A plain washer is interposed between the arm and the blade. It will be understood however that other fastening devices may be used such as a rivet.
In operation, the blade 11 is inserted into the guttering and the device is positioned so that the blade adopts a position transverse to the length of the guttering. This in most cases will require the support arm 11 to be pivoted relative to the blade so that the arm can extend through the gap between the edge of the roof covering and the front upper edge of the guttering. The device is then moved along the guttering and accumulated dirt in the guttering will be drawn along the guttering in front of the blade. If the user is positioned at some point intermediate the ends of the guttering the dirt can be drawn towards that point from one side and then the blade withdrawn and reinserted to draw the dirt to that point from the other side. Thus depending upon the length of the handle a considerable length of guttering can be cleaned without the user having to move from the point or change the direction of attachment of the handle.
The blade 11 which is shown in the drawing is for cleaning a guttering of curved section and therefore the lower edge of the blade has a curved profile. Moreover, the curved edge of the blade defines a lip 14 which extends forwardly of the plane of the blade in the direction of intended movement of the cleaning device and also outwardly so as to define a scraping edge 15. The edge 15 and the inclination of the lip acts to facilitate the removal of hardened deposits in the guttering. The upper edge of the blade defines a forwardly extending lip 16 which acts to contain the dirt in front of the blade as it is moved along the guttering.
The scraping element 10 may be replaced by a brush which has a profile such that the bristles engage the inner surface of the guttering to displace accumulated dirt. The brush as with the blade illustrated, will be pivotally connected to the support arm. In addition, the socket member 12 and the support arm may be secured together so that the axis of the socket member extends in a plane generally parallel to the plane of the blade.

Claims (6)

1. A cleaning device for use when cleaning accumulated dirt from gutterings, the device comprising a scraping element having a shape corresponding to the cross-sectional shape of the guttering to be cleaned, a support arm which at one end is pivotally connected to the scraping element and a handle or handle retaining member to which a handle can be coupled, mounted on the opposite end of the arm.
2. A cleaning device according to Claim 1 in which the scraping element is in the form of a metal blade and the pivotal connection between the arm and the blade is close to the edge of the blade which in use engages the guttering, the pivot axis extending normal to the plane of the blade, and the arm extending in a plane parallel to the plane of the blade.
3. A cleaning device according to Claim 2 in which the handle retaining member comprises a socket member having a bore of nonuniform diameter.
4. A cleaning device according to Claim 2 in which said edge is provided with a lip which extends forwardly of the plane of the blade in the direction of intended movement thereof, the lip also extending outwardly of the blade to form a scraping edge.
5. A cleaning device according to Claim 4 in which a further edge of the blade is provided with a forwardly extending lip.
6. A cleaning device according to Claim 2 in which the pivotal connection is defined by a screw threaded bolt which extends through apertures in the blade and arm, the bolt being engaged by a nut, a plain washer being interposed between the arm and the blade and at least one spring washer being held in compression upon tightening the nut on the bolt
