Abstract
A wishbone suspension arrangement has the wishbone 14 connected to the chassis 10 by means of two outer mounting points 18, 20 and one intermediate mounting point 22. The effect of the intermediate mounting point is to define a centre about which compliant movement of the arm relative to the chassis 10 can take place. <IMAGE>
Description
A VEHICLE WHEEL SUSPENSION ARRANGEMENT
This invention relates to a vehicle wheel suspension arrangement in which a wishbone arm is used to connect a vehicle wheel to the vehicle body.
Wishbone arm suspensions are well known and widely used.
The points of connection of the wishbone arm, particularly to the vehicle body, are typically provided with compliant bushes to afford some degree of relative movement between the arm and the body.
According to the present invention, there is provided a vehicle wheel suspension arrangement which includes a wishbone arm connected at one end to the vehicle body and at the other end to the wheel, wherein the wishbone is connected to the vehicle body at three points.
The three points preferably all lie on or close to a common axis which extends through all three points. However the intermediate point may be slightly offset from a line joining the centres of the two outer points.
The two outer points are preferably provided with compliant bushes, and the intermediate point may be provided with a compliant bush or may be formed by a ball joint.
Where the mounting points are provided by compliant bushes, the axes of the bushes may lie in the plane of the wishbone arm or generally at right angles to this plane. The orientation of the axes of the bushes is not limited to any particular position, and the invention is not limited to any particular combination of orientations. In one particular embodiment however, the outer bush axes both have a common orientation, and the intermediate bush has an axis at right angles to the axes of the outer bushes.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a plan view of a vehicle wheel suspension arrangement in accordance with the invention.
The drawing shows a sub-frame 10 of a vehicle body, a wheel 12 and a wishbone arm 14. The arm 14 is also referred to as a track control arm.
The wheel 12, which is shown schematically, is connected to the outer end of the arm 14 so that the effective mounting point is the point indicated at 16 in the Figure. In practice the outer end of the arm 14 will be connected to a wheel knuckle or hub and the wheel itself will be then mounted on the knuckle or hub.
The inner end of the arm 14 is connected to the sub-frame lo at two outer mounting points designated 18, 20 and at one intermediate mounting point designated 22. The outer mounting points are formed by compliant bushes 24 which are fitted in the arm 14 and are held to the sub-frame by bolts 28-which pass through welded brackets 26. The bolts 28 extend in a generally vertical direction.
At the intermediate mounting point 22, a horizontal compliant bush 30 is fitted in the arm 14 and is-mounted on a horizontal bolt 32 between two mounting brackets 34, 36.
In use, the compliance of the bushes (ie the degree to which they can yield and their inherent resistance to yielding) is set to give specific characteristics. However there is at times a compromise between the softness of the bushes and the distance to which they should. be allowed to yield, and the provision of the intermediate mounting point can affect the extent to which movement can take place, by providing a centre of rotation about which the compliant movement can occur.
The axes of the bushes 24, 30 can be as shown with the two outer bushes being vertical and the intermediate bush horizontal. Alternatively all the bushes could be horizontal, they could all be vertical or there could be any combination of these arrangements. Furthermore the intermediate mounting point does not need to have compliance and could therefore be formed by a ball joint which would simply provide a fixed centre of rotation.
The drawing also shows an arc 38 which illustrates the direction of "compliant" movement of the outer end of the arm.
This suspension can be used on front or rear wheels, on driven or undriven wheels and on steered or unsteered wheels.
It is an advantage of the arrangement described here that both lateral and longitudinal compliance and direction can be accurately controlled.
