Abstract

A device which is adjustable so that it may be used to measure accurately the width or thickness of a cavity wall or any other two mutually parallel surfaces comprises a detachable sliding measurement finger (3), a reference surface (7) and a locking screw. The device, by repositioning the measuring finger (3), in the orthogonally arranged guiding slots (16) also enables such measurements to continue around corners in the wall or other surfaces. <IMAGE>

Description

CAVITY GAUGE INSTRUMENT This invention relates to an adjustable instrument for the accurate measurement of 2 surfaces or planes relative to each other.
The requirement for accurate positioning and/or measuring the relative position of 2 surfaces and/or planes has long existed in many forms of engineering, and, in, particular for the construction of cavity walls in the building industry.
Accordingly the present invention provides a readily adjustable hand-held instrument comprising, basically, a handle with adjustable indication fingers which may be adjusted to specific measurements by reference to the in-built measurement scale.
A specific application of the invention will be described below by way of reference to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1. illustrates the complete assembled instrument.
Figure 2. illustrates the component parts.
Referring to the drawing, the instrument comprises a basic handle (1), including levelling bubble vials (2) with a completely detachable sliding measurement finger (3), including measurement scale (4). The measurement finger may be fitted into the handle section in either of 2 guiding slots (5,6) which are mutually at 90". As the handle section principal reference surface (7) is fitted against the known reference surface or plane, the measurement finger is adjusted to the locking screw (8) thereby providing a reference surface for positioning the second surface or plane relative to the original.

Claims (3)

1. A readily adjustable device for accurate measurement of 2 surfaces as planes relative to each other.
2. Measurement of separation of surfaces or planes by reference to in-built measurement scales, or by adjustment of instrument to a known separation for exact replication or duplication elsewhere.
3. Measurements may be made in 2 planes at mutual right angles in order to facilitate continuation of the required separation around corners.
