Abstract
The ladder is fixed to a structure and in the closed or fold away position with lockable catchment mechanism applied, the apparatus cannot be used as a ladder, the rungs being concealed within the side pieces. In the open position with the lockable catchment mechanism released, the apparatus may be used as a conventional ladder. <IMAGE>
Description
COLLAPSABLE FOLDAWAY LADDER
This invention relates to a collapsable foldaway ladder.
Ladders are well-known pieces of portable apparatus which comprise two long parallel members connected by several parallel rungs or steps fixed to them at right angles, for climbing up or down.
Ladders can however be time consuming to place in position and take down. When not in use and if left in situ can take up valuable space, cause unnecessary obstruction and allow easy access to anybody wishing to use them.
According to the present invention there is provided a collapsable foldaway ladder comprising two long parallel members or side pieces connected by a series of parallel rungs. Means for securing one of the side pieces to a wall or other suitable structure is provided. Both the side pieces and the rungs being adapted as to allow a connection of the rungs to the side pieces, the spacing together with the connection thereof, allowing the apparatus the movement necessary so that it may be opened out or folded away. A lockable catchment mechanism is provided to releasably hold the apparatus closed in the foldaway position.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows in perspective the apparatus in the closed or foldaway position.
Figure 2 illustrates the apparatus partially opened.
Figure 3 shows the apparatus in the fully opened position.
Referring to the drawing the apparatus comprises two long side pieces 7,5 in the form of 'U' shaped channel in cross section and a series of rungs, 9, connected or linked to and within the side pieces. A lockable catchment mechanism is provided (not shown) to releasably hold the two side pieces together when the apparatus is in the closed or foldaway position as illustrated in Figure 1. In this position the rungs being consealed within the side pieces.
The apparatus is shown secured and correctly in position by the side piece 5 to a suitable structure using the means provided, (not shown).
In order to open the apparatus so that it may be used as a ladder, the lockable catchment mechanism holding the two side pieces together is released thereby allowing the side piece 7 (that which is not fastened to a wall or other structure) to drop downward and outward, piveting around the connection made by the rungs until coming to rest at ground level indicated by a thick black wavy line.
In order to close the apparatus it is necessary to lift the side piece 7 until it comes together with the side piece 5 and apply the lockable catchment mechanism.
Note:
The catchment mechanism may be placed in any convenient position along the length of the apparatus.
Claims (5)
1 A collapsable foldaway ladder comprising two long parallel members or side pieces connected by a series of parallel rungs. A lockable catchment mechanism is provided to releasably hold the apparatus closed when in the foldaway position.
2 A collapsable foldaway ladder as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the lockable catchment mechanism is provided on the apparatus co-operable with the apparatus to releasably hold the apparatus closed when in the foldaway position.
3 A collapsable foldaway ladder as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the lockable catchment mechanism is provided, fastened to a suitable structure, co-operable with the apparatus, to releasably hold the apparatus closed when in the foldaway position.
4 A collapsable foldaway ladder as claimed in Claim 2 or Claim 3, wherein the lockable catchment mechanism is automatically applied on closing the apparatus.
5 A collapsable foldaway ladder substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1 - 3 of the accompanying drawing.
