Abstract
A garden bird-feeder includes an outer lattice construction having a cylindrical portion topped by a dome portion. The lattice permits birds access to a base feeding tray and an upper dished bathing tray, but prevents predators, eg cats, from gaining access. A pole extends through a central aperture in the feeding tray and the whole feeder is supported by locating a central depression on the underside of the bathing tray on the top of the pole. The various components of the feeder are held together with spring clips and when dismantled can assume a flattened configuration. <IMAGE>
Description
GARDEN BIRD-FEEDER.
This invention relates to a practical garden bird-feeder of ornamental design. Bird-feeders are well known items of garden furniture. Their example ranges from model houses on stands, through pendant wire nut cages and half coconuts; grassed, earth and concrete areas to window cills and roofs.
The general purpose being to encourage the gathering of birds for aesthetic and emotional delight and to offer sustenance to God's creatures during times that include periods of hardship.
This invention (when assembled) will provide a practical garden bird-feeder of classically pleasing form: will be dynamically stable in winds: will provide predatcr-resistant feeding and bathing platforms: will be easily cleaned and replenished; and will offer the humerous illusion of 'caged birds', whilst not in any way restricting the natural freedom of the feeding birds.
According to the present invention:
There is provided a hollow cylinder, mounted vertically on its central axis, with a releasably secured hollow domed roof surmounting; as shown in figs 1 & .
There is provided., inside the cylinder, a lower feeding floor releasably secured to the base circumference of the cylinder; as shown in figs 1 & .
There is provided an upper bathing-level, inside the cylinder, and releasably secured to the upper circumference of the cylinder; as shown in figs 1 & .
There is provided a single-leg stand, that locates through a hole in the base level and is gravity secured to a blip in the under-side of the upper bathing level; as shown in fig 1.
There is provided a hook attached to the top-side of the blip in the upper bathing level.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Fig 1. shows in perspective, the assembled feeder mounted on its stand. the configuration resembling that of a domed cylinder of lattice construction, with two floors and central support stand.
Fig 1. shows the stand: which may be a braced leg, or a pole fixed in the ground.
Figs 2. shows the latticed dome in plan and elevation.
Fig 3. shows the the upper bathing level in plan and section; comprising a disc of suitably water resistant material with hollows formed for the containment of water and a central blip in the under-side to locate the stand and with a hook top-side should the feeder be suspended.
Fig 4. shows the lower feeding level in plan and section; essentially a flat disc with central hole of sufficient size to allow the free passage of the support leg.
Refering to the drawings:
Each of the four major components: the cylinder, the dome, the upper and lower levels, are releasably secured to its respective neighbour with spring clips for the purpose of assembly and safe mounting, and provisioning, cleaning, dismantling and transportation.
The lattice gauge of the dome and of the cylinder is of sufficient spacing to allow the passage of birds of blackbird size; but not predator mammals of the size of cats.
The hole in the floor of the lower feeding level is of such size as to allow the constructed devise to freely rotate about the vertical axis when assaulted by predator mammals, and to allow the devise to move in the wind without blowing over.
The physical charateristics of the materials used for the dome and cylinder such that when dis-assembled lay flat but when assembled, adopt their prescribed geometric shape, and are releasably secured by spring clips.
The physical charateristics of the materials used for the upper water level such; that the water is securely contained and that when the level is dis-assembled the depressions lay flat within the thickness of the level.
The physical charateristics of the materials used for the designed configuration of the assembled devise to maintain the designed shape of the devise in handling and use.
Claims (11)
1. When assembled, a practical garden bird-feeder of ornamental design, in the configuration of regular cylinder, with dome, and both of lattice construction. As shown in fig 1.
2. A bird-feeder as above described containing a lower feeding floor with central orifice that will allow the free passage of the support leg. As shown in fig 4.
3. A bird-feeder as described in claim 1. containing an upper floor for bathing, depressions in that floor level in the form of troughs, allowing the containment of water. A blip below the centre of radius for locating and securing the support leg. A hook located atop the blip radius should the requirement be that the devise is suspended. As shown in fig 3.
4. A bird-feeder as previously claimed with means for releasably securing the feeding and bathing levels and the dome to the cylinder.
5. A bird-feeder as previously claimed and as shown in figs 1.to 4. that will lay flat when dismantled.
6. A bird-feeder as previously claimed with means for releasably securing the devise -through gravity- to the support leg; or through suspension to any over-head projection.
7. A bird-feeder as previously claimed where the spacings of the lattice of the dome and cylinder are such as to allow the free passage of birds through the devise but not predatory mammals of the size of cats.
8. A bird-feeder as previously claimed where the rotational movement of the devise will deter predatory mammals from climbing and entering the devise.
9. A bird-feeder as previously claimed where the device is secure against excessive movement and damage through winds by the nature of its design and construction.
10. A bird-feeder as previously claimed where the lines of the devise will give the illusion of containing caged birds whilst not restricting the freedom of the birds.
11. A practical garden bird-feeder of ornamental design and substantially as described herein with reference to figures 1. to 4. of the accompanying drawings.
