Abstract

The motorcycle has an electric motor 5 in each wheel powered by a generator 23 which is driven by an i.c. engine 1 via an automatic gearchange 2. The speeds of the engine 1 and motors 5 are linked by an electronic management console 6. Toxic emissions are reduced by catalytic conversion in exhausts 9. <IMAGE>

Description

HYBRID DRIVE MOTOR CYCLE This invention relates to a hybrid drive motor cycle.

Motor cycle. design has traditionally followed the concept of leading, or front wheel, steered and not powered. A trailing, or rear wheel, not steered, powered by A fixed engine in the chassis, or frame.

Disadvantages of this layout are ;a) Insufficient weight over wheels.

b) Front/rear wheel size diffrential.

c) Drive to one wheel only with respect to relatively short wheelbase,with tendency to lift front wheel.

d) Concentration of weight centraLly between wheels.

e) Primitive drive system.

f) Tendency to lift rear wheel under braking.

According to the present invention there is provided:a) 4 compact, efficient internal combustion engine of approx. 600 cc.

capacity, catalytic exhausts to keep toxic emissions to a minimum, driving; b) Through an automatic gearchange to provide smooth shifting up and down on demand, to; c) A generator to provide all electrical power to supply demands of battery maintenance, lighting and electronic needs, and power on demand to d) Electric motors 1 mounted in each of both front and rear wheels, via power leads as required,controlted by e) An electronic control management system.

The invention is shown pictorially, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which; Figs. 1,3 & 4 are Plan, Front & Rear views showing general layout.

Fig. 2 specifically illustrates the general layout of the aforementioned technical features.

The relevant parts are indicated by a broken line thus ~ The component parts shown on the drawing, with specific reference to Fig.2, are as below:1) Internal combustion engine.

2) Autodrive unit.

3) Electric generator unit.

4) Supply wires qty. 2.

5) Electric motors qty. 2.

6) Electronic management console.

7) Fuel reservoir & supply.

R) Battery,(main & standby).

9) Twin catalytic exhausts.

Claims (6)

1. Acceleration and deceleration of the machine is achieved by rotational adjustment of a handgrip throttle. This action increases or reduces the amount of electrical input to the electric wheel motors,thereby altering the rotational speed.
2. The demand or reduction of electrical power, initiated as in Claim 1, is electronically linked to the revolution output of the internal combustion unit.
3. The revolution output of the internal combustion engine resulting from initiation described in Claims 1 & 2, responds accordingly to increase or decrease in speed and therefore modify power output to the generator.
4. The result of engine speed change as described in Claim 3 is to modify the range of revolutions through the automatic gearchange process as required.
5. F6r example, an increase in twist of the throttle, initiates internal combustion revolution increase, in turn increases speed of generator via gearchange and supplying more electrical power to wheel motors to increase Road Speed; and vica versa, relating to Claims 1-4 inclusive.
6. With reference to deceleration, as vica versa in Claim 5, the electronic management provides for the electric wheel motors to slow down smoothly without stopping completely, in order to maintain vehicle traction (Hydraulic brakes are fitted to both wheels and have an antilock system).
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows 1A motor cycle having a front and a rear wheel located by a frame characterised by: an internal combustion engine having a power output shaft; an electric generator having an input drive shaft; a transmission linking the power output shaft of the engine to the input drive shaft of the generator and providing for at least two speed ratios between the output and input shafts; electric motors mounted in the front and rear wheels; electrical power supply leads passing directly or indirectly from the generator to each motor; and a speed control system providing for the regulation of the speed of the motor cycle by regulating the power supply to the motors.
2 A motor cycle as claimed in Claim 1 incorporating an engine/transmission control system providing for the engine speed to be adjusted in response to the speed control system.
3 A motor cycle as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the internal combustion engine is equipped with a catalytic converter to reduce noxious emissions.
4 A motor cycle as claimed in any preceding claim incorporating a fuel storage system wherein the fuel for the internal combustion engine is stored in gaseous form.
5 A motor cycle as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the transmission is automatic with either stepless or stepped transmission ratios.
6 A motor cycle as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the front wheel is used for steering the bike.
7 A motor cycle as claimed in Claim 6 wherein the front wheel is pivoted for steering by way of a hub mounted pivot.
8 A motor cycle as claimed in Claim 7 wherein the frame takes the form of a beam extending forwardly to support the hub mounted pivot and rearwardly to support the rear wheel by means of a lateral cantilever.
9 A motor cycle as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
