Abstract

A loadbearing block a and a coat of plaster c, separated by and bonded in various manners to, a rigid insulant b. The insulant and the loadbearing block should be tongued on one edge and one end and grooved on the other edge and end so as to eliminate cold bridging across inside leaves of external cavity walls. Description

This invention relates to a composite building block which is a pre-plasteered, pre-insulated loadbearing building block for use as an inside leaf of an external cavity wall.
This invention eliminates cold bridging across the joints of blockwork in an inside leaf. This cold bridging can account for up to 7% of the area of a wall. so this is an important step forward in energy conservation.
Buildings are normally constructed with external cavity walls.
Cavities can be totally filled with an insulant. usually under pressure. There are severe problems with water being trapped in the insulant and bridging the cavity.
Cavities can be patially filled using cavity batts as the wall is being built. Problems still occur, mostly because of faulty workmanship, as the method relies on the integrity of the tradesmen.
Blockwork can have an insulant bonded to the cavity side of the block. Joints to the blockwork are lett exposed and unprotected.
Plasterboard with an insulant bonded to the back can be used as a thermal dry lining to block inside skins.
All these methods require work to be done on the inside as a separate operation, whether it be plastering or taping and jointing plasterboard.
All these methods also allow the cold bridging to take place across the joints of the blockwork, which, although disregarded in thermal insulation calculations at the moment, nevertheless gives a distorted vaiue for the thermal resistance of a wall.
According to this invention a concrete, lightweight concrete, aerated concrete or gypsum loadbearing block as one face and a coat of plaster as the other face, separated by an insulant such as mineral fibre. fibre glass, polyurethane, polystyrene, indeed any rigid insulant to form a sandwich.
The blocks and the insulant should be tongued and grooved to avoid cold bridging across the joints, as in Fig 1.
The insulant can be mechanically fixed to the loadbearing part of the block and the coat of plaster on the inside, using dovetail or other types of joints, at various frequencies in the block as required, as in Fig 2, or can be bonded to the two surfaces of plaster by the use of an adhesive, see Fig 3.
Blocks can be made up to any overall thickness, depending on the insulation value required, and can be manufactured in any height or width.
Special reveal blocks. which are handed, are also a part of this invention. See Fig 4.

Claims (1)

  1. Claims, A loadbearing block and a coat of plaster. separated by and bonded in various manners to, a rigid insulant.
The insulant and the loadbearing block shouid be tongued on one edge and one end, and grooved on the other edge and end so as to eliminate cold bridging across inside leaves of external cavity wails.
Gypsum. if used, can be made hydrofuge if required so that walls can be built before roofing works commence without the blocks being adversely arfected by water.
