Abstract

An implement storage device comprising a body lattice (1) having a plurality of upwardly extending walled elongate compartments (2) having open uppermost ends. At least some of the compartments extend substantially parallel to and adjacent respective further compartments, the adjacent compartments being separated by common elongate sidewalls (3). Selected common sidewallls (3) may be removed from the body lattice (1) such that the remaining walls (3) of the respective adjacent compartments define a shaped receptacle (4, 5, 6) for receiving a selected one of the implements.

Description

Implement Storage Device The present invention relates to a device suitable for storing implements such as carpenters' or mechanics' tools, garden implements or the like.
Typical well known tool boxes comprise an openable box in which the tools (spanners, screwdrivers, chisels, hacksaws and the like) are laid on their side. Such conventional tool boxes suffer from a number of disadvantages in terms of ease of use and safety. For example, sharp edged tools such as saws, chisels, craft knives or the like may lie amongst other tools with their sharp edges exposed, thus putting the user at risk of an accident. Furthermore small tools may be difficult to find if they are covered by other tools.
The present invention alleviates these disadvantages.
According to the present invention therefore, there is provided an implement storage device comprising a body portion having a plurality of upwardly extending walled elongate compartments, the uppermost ends of said compartments being open, with at least some of said compartments extending substantially parallel to and adjacent respective further compartments from which further compartments said at least some compartments are separated by common elongate sidewalls, selected ones of which sidewalls may be removed from said body portion such that the remaining walls of the respective adjacent compartments define a shaped receptacle for receiving a selected one of said implements.
It is preferred that the storage device, and particularly the body portion thereof, is of moulded plastics.
The common elongate sidewalls are preferably removed from the body portion by hacksawing or "snapping off" from the body portion along the respective line of connection to the body portion.
Preferably, the device is provided with handle means enabling the device to be carried in the hand by the user. It is further preferred that the body portion is in the form of a lattice of compartments having regular geometric transverse cross sections, which are preferably rectangular and/or square.
In a preferred embodiment. the device according to the invention further comprises a walled tray in which the body portion may be located. Advantageously, the tray is provided with a handle such that the device may be supported with the body portion resting on and located by the tray.
In this embodiment. it is preferred that the tray walls are less upwardly extensive than the outer walls of the body portion.
It is further preferred that the outer walls of the body portion and the tray walls should be slightly spaced from one another. This may be achieved by the provision of spacer elements either internally on the tray walls, or externally on the outer walls of the body portion.
The invention will now be further described in a particular embodiment by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings. in which: Figure 1 is a perspective representation of an implement storage device according to the invention; Figure 2 is a perspective representation of the device of Figure 1 in its ready to use condition; and Figure 3 is a perspective representation of a preferred embodiment of an implement storage device according to the invention.
Referring to the drawings, an implement storage device comprises a rectangular moulded plastics body lattice 1 having a multiplicity of upwardly extending compartments 2 formed by mutually perpendicular intersecting walls 3. The body 1 is moulded such that the walls 3 are connected to one another at their intersections and that a "line of weakness" exists slightly spaced therefrom. The walls 3 may be broken, cut (for example, using a hacksaw or the like), or otherwise removed from the body 1 along the lines of weakness. to produce shaped enlarged receptacles 4.5.6 (See Figure 2) suitable for receiving tools or other implements.
In this way, for example, as illustrated in Figure 2, side walls 3 can be removed to produce a receptacle 4 for receiving a plane, a receptacle 5 for receiving a hammer, a receptacle 6 for receiving an irregularly shaped specialist tool, such as a soldering iron or the like.
It will be noted that side walls 3 may be removed from the body lattice 1 to suit the requirements in terms of shape and size, of a particular user's tools. Furthermore, all tools may be accomodated in the device with their sharp or working edges either downwardly facing or adjacent the walls 3 of the body lattice, reducng the risk of a user accidentally cutting himself when searching for a particular tool.
The centrally located aperture 7 extends right through the body lattice 1, and as is seen in Figure 3, permits a handle 8 provided on the base of tray 9 to project therethrough. In the embodiment shown in Figure 3, the outer walls 10 of the tray 9 are adjacent the outer walls 11 of the body lattice 1 and spaced therefrom by the outwardly projecting spacers 12 provided thereon. The walls of the tray extend only part way upwardly adjacent the walls 11 of the body lattice 1 enabling the space between the walls 11 and 10 to be used for receiving larger substantially planar tools such as saws, or sanding discs.
Various inserts. not shown. arranged to be received in the compartments 2 may be used for specific purposes. For example, small removable containers may be located in the compartments for storing screws, tacks or the like; and inserts or the like may be provided for some of the compartments 2 in order to reduce the effective depth of the relevant compartment where it is desired to store shorter tools such as small screwdrivers or the like.
