Abstract

The electrical trigger control of a high pressure water jet pumping system (e.g. fig 1) comprises a high pressure pump (2) transmitting water through hose (3) to hand held lance (8) and nozzle (9). The process of pumping of water from high pressure pump (2) into hose (3) may be activated / deactivated by depression of lever (7) which actions switch (6) within trigger assembly (5) sending the appropriate electrical signal back to pump (2) via cable (4). <IMAGE>

Description

Electrical Trigger Control This invention relates to the method of control of a mobile hand operated high pressure water jet pumping system. Such a piece of equipment may be used, for example, for the cutting and removal of concrete, removal of coatings and debris from concrete and steel surfaces or for general cleaning of surfaces.
Systems of this kind have been proposed where water is pumped from a high pressure pump, comprising of an engine or prime mover attached to a suitable high pressure pump the water then being transmitted via a high pressure hose to the cutting nozzle which is mounted on the end of a hand held lance, the operator control of the water supply to the nozzle being by means of a hand operated trigger control lever, mounted on the back of the said lance.
In past inventions the trigger normally operated a mechanical water valve set in the trigger body. This has several undesirable characteristics of which all are detrimental to safety. Using this type of control the water would be held pressurised in the hose whilst not passing water to the nozzle, a danger if a hose should fail. The trigger would also require large operational forces to overcome the pressure in the valve, and would give rapid connection of the lance and nozzle to full pressure in the line - hence a large operator stress level and a related danger aspect.
This invention seeks to overcome the above problems by control of the emission of the high pressure water by means other than that described above.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a high pressure pump, which provides water at high pressure via a flexible hose to a hand held lance such a lance comprising of a nozzle/nozzles and a hand operated trigger mechanism, this mechanism being an electrical switch connected via an electrical cable to the high pressure pump, and connected in such a manner that whilst the trigger is released water pressure and flow exiting from the nozzle on the said lance is reduced or stopped.
The embodiment of the invention will now be described by reference to an example as in fig.l which is a schematic jet cutting system. Water is taken from a suitable supply (1) into the high pressure pump (2). The pump then provides high pressure delivery of water via hose (3) to the high pressure lance tube (8), and subsequently the nozzle (9). It is a feature of this invention that the process of pumping water by (2) into hose (3) may be activated or de-activated by depression of lever (7) mounted within the trigger assembly (5). This would work by lever (7) actioning a switch (6) within trigger assembly (5) and sending the appropriate electrical signal back to the high pressure pump (2)- via cable (4).
It may be a further feature of this invention that the switch (6) may be of the form, for example, of a proximity sensor, using a contained inductive sensing circuit to sense the proximity of the trigger action without a direct mechanical linkage to switch (6).

Claims (2)

1. A high pressure pumping system consisting of a high pressure pump supplying water via a suitable hose to a hand held lance, the said lance having an attached high pressure nozzle / nozzles and control lever, and wherein the control lever can be used to activate / deactivate the process of pumping water by the high pressure pump to the said lance, and where the control lever controls the said activation / deactivation by means of an electrical switch operated by the lever and an appropriate electrical signal transmitted by cable to the high pressure pump.
2. A high pressure water jet pumping system as in claim 1, where the electrical switch operated by the control lever may be of the 'proximity sensor' type incorporating a sensing circuit and without mechanical contacts inside the switch.
