Abstract

A connection is provided between an implement and a tractor. The implement is connected to the bottom link 8 of the tractor for rotation about a horizontal axis perpendicular to the direction of travel of the tractor. Operation of a ram 22 rotates the implement about the horizontal axis to force the implement into engagement with the ground. The connection further comprises an upper link 14 and an intermediate link 16. The upper link is for attachment at one end to the upper hitch of the tractor. The intermediate link is pivotably connected between the other end of the upper link and the implement, or link rigidly connected thereto. The ram is connected to act between the upper link and the intermediate link. <IMAGE>

Description

AN IMPROVED CONNECTION BETWEEN AN IMPLEMENT AND A TRACTOR The invention relates to a improved connection between an implement and a tractor. In particular the invention relates to a connection which has means for transferring part of the weight of the tractor to the implement for the purpose of improved ground engagement.
A known connection between an implement (eg. a spiker, piercer or slitter for turf) and a tractor comprises means to connect the implement to the bottom link of the tractor for rotation about a horizontal axis perpendicular to the direction of travel of the tractor and ram means connecting the implement, or a link rigidly connected thereto, to the upper hitch point of the tractor such that operation of the ram means rotates the implement about the said horizontal axis either to force the implement into engagement with the ground or to disengage the implement from the ground.
This will be referred to hereinafter as a connection of the kind described.
Adjustable links may be provided to rigidly connect the upper hitch point to the implement in the region of the said horizontal axis to locate the horizontal axis with respect to the upper hitch on the tractor and to form in effect an A frame.
A disadvantage of the known connection is that in practice the ram means has very little room in which to operate and could not be constructed effectively.
The invention provides a connection of the kind described in which there is an upper link for attachment at one end to the upper hitch of the tractor and an intermediate link pivotably connected between the other end of the upper link and the implement or link rigidly connected thereto, and in which the ram means act between the upper link and the intermediate link. This is effective to provide a mechanical advantage between the ram and the implement as the intermediate link acts as a lever.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a tractor connected to an implement by a connection including a ram and provided in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 shows a side view of an upper part of the connection of Figure 1; Figure 3 shows an upper part of the connection of Figure 1 as connected to an implement; Figure 4 shows the connection of Figure 1 with the ram fully extended; and Figure 5 shows the tractor connected to the implement by the connection of Figure 1 with the ram fully extended.
Figure 1 shows a connection 1 between an implement 2 and a tractor 4 as provided in accordance with the present invention. The connection 1 includes a pair of bottom link pins 6 connecting the implement 2 to the bottom links 8 of a tractor 4. The bottom links 8 are capable of being locked rigid by the internal mechanics or hydraulics of the tractor 4, so forming a rigid connection between the implement 2 and the lower hitch point of the tractor 4.
The upper part 10 of the connection 1 is provided between an upper hitch point of the tractor and an upper point 12 rigidly connected to the implement 2 and positioned above the link pins 6. The upper point 12 may be provided as an integral part of the implement 2.
Alternatively, the upper point 12 may be provided in a link, the link being rigidly connected to the implement 2. The upper part 10 of the connection 1 includes an upper link 14 pivotably connected to an intermediate link 16 at a pivot point 18. The free end of the upper link 14 is connected to the upper hitch point of the tractor by an easily removable pin. The free end of the intermediate link 16 is connected to the implement 2 at the upper point 12 via an adjustable link 20 (visible in Figure 2) by an easily removable pin. The adjustable link 20 enables connection between various types of implement and tractor at the upper point 12.
Relative movement of the upper link 14 and intermediate link 16 about the pivot point 18 is caused by a double acting hydraulic ram 22. The position of the hydraulic ram 22 is shown more clearly in Figure 2 which shows the upper part 10 of the connection 1. One end of the hydraulic ram 22 is connected to the upper link 14 at a point 24 displaced from the end of the upper link 14 that is connected to the upper hitch point of the tractor. The other end of the hydraulic ram 22 is connected to the intermediate link 16 at a point 26. The required relative movement of the upper link 14 and intermediate link 16 for a given stroke of the hydraulic ram 22 can be provided by a suitable geometric arrangement of the upper link 14, intermediate link 16 and hydraulic ram 22.
Figure 2 further shows in part one of a pair of adjustable tie bars 28 providing a rigid connection between the upper link 14 and the implement 2.
Advantageously, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, one end of a tie bar 28 is connected to the upper link 14 at or near the point 24 displaced from the end of the upper link 14.
The other end of a tie bar 28 is connected to the implement 2 by one of the link pins 6. The tie bars 28 are adjustable in length so that they may be used between various types of implement and tractor but provide a rigid connection during operation of the tractor and implement.
The combination of the tie bars 28 and the bottom link 8 form in effect an A frame. Connection of the respective ends of the ram 22 and the tie bars 28 to the upper link 14 at or near the point 24 displaced from the end of the upper link 14 rather than directly to the tractor enables the connection 1 to be provided as an integral structure instead of a plurality of parts.
The structure of the connection 1 defines a horizontal axis H perpendicular to the direction of travel of the tractor and implement, and about which the implement 2 can rotate. In the construction shown, extension of the hydraulic ram 22 causes the implement to rotate about the axis H towards the ground to engage the implement with the ground. Rotation in the other direction will allow the implement to be transported.
Operation of the hydraulic ram 22 is effected by a valve, which may be operated by the user, utilising the pressurised hydraulic system of the tractor.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the upper part 10 of the connection 1 as attached to the implement 2. The hydraulic ram 22 is partly extended. Figures 4 and 5 show the connection 1 with the hydraulic ram 22 fully extended, Figure 5 also showing the tractor 4.
Modifications to the embodiment described within the scope of the present invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
