Abstract

The covering assembly comprises a sleeve 1 and a draped cover 2 formed from a suitable fabric. At the rear bottom edge of the sleeve there is an extending strip 3 and a corresponding strip 4 extends from the back of the top surface of the cover 2. When the sleeve 1 and the cover 2 are positioned over parts of a car seat, for example, (in the attitude as illustrated in the drawing) the strip 3 will be folded below the bottom edge of the seat back so as to overlay the strip 4. Mutually engaging strips 5 are formed so as to hold the two strips 3 and 4 securely but releasably together. When the whole assembly is in place a very neat appearance is achieved. An opening 7 is formed in the top wall of the sleeve 1 to enable the sleeve to be dropped over a projecting head rest. <IMAGE>

Description

"Improvements relating to Car Seat Covers" Conventional car seat covers are not particularly effective in that problems are experienced in creating a suitable design which will ensure that the covers stay in place and in a relatively taut condition.

According to the present invention there is provided a removable car seat covering assembly comprising a sleeve to be slid over the seat back, and a draped cover to be draped over the base of the seat, the rear lower edge of the sleeve and the back of the top surface of the cover defining extension strips which will be overlaid when the assembly is positioned on the seat, the strips incorporating mutually engageable and releasable interconnection elements.

With such an assembly the sleeve and cover portions (which will of course be cut to shape to fit the intended car seat design) will be held together securely by the extension strips so that neither part of the covering assembly will tend to move or become significantly wrinkled.

In the preferred arrangement a further extension strip will project from the front lower edge of the sleeve, this further strip being tucked back under the bottom edge of the seat back so as to be gripped between the seat back and the seat base.

Ideally, if necessary, openings will be provided in the side or top walls of the sleeve for accommodation of parts projecting from the seat body (such as headrest mountings). With advantage, these openings will be releasably sealable, such as in the same manner as the interconnection elements on the extension strips, so that the sleeve can be located over the projections on the seat body and then the opening can be closed as much as possible to give a neat appearance.

In the preferred arrangement the interconnection elements will be so-called "Velcro" strips which conventionally comprise interconnecting hooks, barbs and loops on a material backing strip, although zip fasteners could conceivably be used.

The invention may be performed in various ways and a preferred embodiment thereof will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of parts of a covering assembly to be applied to a car seat, and Figure 2 is a perspective view of an alternative form of cover for a car seat back.

The covering assembly illustrated in Figure 1 comprises a sleeve 1 and a draped cover 2 formed from a suitable fabric. At the rear bottom edge of the sleeve there is an extending strip 3 and a corresponding strip 4 extends from the back of the top surface of the cover 2. When the sleeve 1 and the cover 2 are positioned over parts of a car seat (in the attitude as illustrated in the drawing) the strip 3 will be folded below the bottom edge of the seat back so as to overlay the strip 4. Mutually engaging "Velcro" strips 5 are formed so as to hold the two strips 3 and 4 securely but releasably together. A further extension strip 6 from the lower front edge of the sleeve 1 is tucked below the bottom of the seat back (in the manner as illustrated). When the whole assembly is in place a very neat appearance is achieved.

An opening 7 may be formed in the top wall of the sleeve 1 to enable the sleeve to be dropped over a projecting headrest. "Velcro" fastenings on the portions forming the sides of the opening 7 will be interengaged to close off the opening, leaving small holes 8 for the pillars of the headrest. Fixing cords 9 may be provided, if desired, to hold down the draped edges 10 of the cover 2.

Other seats within a car may be of a somewhat different structure. For example, a rear seat may be of split form enabling a seat back to be folded forward and there will often be projecting portions of the seat back which enable the seat back to be fixed back in position.

The sleeve 11 shown in Figure 2 has an opening 12 in the top wall through which an operating plunger can pass. The side wall of the sleeve is, in this case, of split form enabling an opening 13 to be defined so that the sleeve can readily be draped over the seat back and then held in place by interengaging "Velcro" fasteners on the portions defined in the opening 13, again leaving suitable openings 14 through which projections on the seat back will pass. An extension strip 15 at the lower front edge of the sleeve 11 will be tucked underneath the seat back to provide a neat finish.

The seat base will be protected by a draped cover of a suitable size and shape but designed generally on the lines of the cover 2 shown in Figure 1.

Claims (6)

1. A removable seat covering assembly comprising a sleeve to be slid over the seat back, and a draped cover to be draped over the base of the seat, the rear lower edge of the sleeve and the back of the top surface of the cover defining extension strips which will be overlaid when the assembly is positioned on the seat, the strips incorporating mutually engageable and releasable interconnection elements.
2. An assembly according to Claim 1, including a further extension strip which projects from the front lower edge of the sleeve, this further strip being tucked back, in use, under the bottom edge of the seat back so as to be gripped between the seat back and the seat base.
3. An assembly according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein openings are provided in the side or top walls of the sleeve for accommodation of parts projecting from the seat body.
4. An assembly according to Claim 3, wherein the openings are releasably sealable, such as in the same manner as the interconnection elements on the extension strips, so that the sleeve can be located over the projections on the seat body and then the opening can be closed as much as possible.
5. An assembly according to any one of Claims 1 to 4, wherein the interconnection elements comprise zip fasteners or interconnecting hooks, barbs and loops on a material backing strip.
6. A removable seat covering assembly substantially as -herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
