An automatic control for a gas-fired water-heating apparatus comprises a microcomputer as a central control unit. The unit (13) can be switched between an input mode and a maintaining mode at least. A keyboard (14) and an at least three-digit, and preferably alphanumeric display means (15) is connected by control lines (16) and data lines (17) to the microcomputer (12). At least one selector key (14') of the keyboard (14) serves to switch from monitoring operation to an inputting operation and to a servicing operation. The remaining keys (14'', 14''') may be used to effect operational data during an inputting operation and for a setting of apparatus parameters, for fault diagnosis, or for a sampling of points of measurement, during a servicing operation. Description

t 1 12 12 - 4 C-') 6,: - o, C) An automatic control for water-heatinq
aiDparatus This invention relates to an automatic control for water-heating apparatus, especially but not exclusively gas-fired water-heating apparatus, such as circulating water-heating means provided with a heater for water consumption, which heating means may for example be one which can be changed over from supplying hot water for a heating system to supplying hot water for consumption, or for a flow heater, or hot-water storage apparatus, which control comprises as a central automatic control unit a microcomputer, to which are connected components and sensors of the apparatus for automatic control, such as a circulating pump, a fan, valves, igniting means or automatic fuel-firing means, a temperature feeler, and a flame monitor.
In previously proposed gas-fired water heaters in which microprocessors or microcomputers are used to control the apparatus said microprocessors or microcomputers are used to evaluate the operational data furnished by sensors of the gas-fired apparatus and to control and 'monitor the final control elements, for example the valves, and the igniting means, in accordance with predetermined algorithms and optionally in dependence upon externally provided desired values, such as a preselected temperature of a room thermostat. In such control means a display of operational data by display means is not necessary, and for this reason such display is not contemplated. EP-B 173,717 describes such an automatic control of a gas-fired heating boiler by a microprocessor. That plant does not comprise means for a display of operational states by a display unit.
It is also usual to provide heating apparatus with microcomputer controllers which have a higher rank than the control means of the apparatus. Such controllers provide desired values for the control means of the apparatus and said desired values are determined in dependence upon timing programs or on other parameters, such as the heating-up time, and the temperature- lowering time, which have been preselected by the user. For the selection of such parameters it is necessary that such control apparatus enters into a dialogue with the user and for this reason they require a display unit with controls, and the display may be controlled by the microprocessor or mcirocomputer.
Finally gas equipment control means have already been proposed which have a fault code and status display.
Such controls have only a one-digit seven segment display, which can display only a few status messages or fault messages, such as a message that the burner is on, or that there is a fault in automatic fuel-firing means.
The previously proposed apparatus has the disadvantage that a subsequent adjustment of heating apparatus in view of new safety regulations or for an energy-saving operation, for a desired exhaust gas j.
V 4 temperature, for an adaptation to the locally existing gas pressure and for similar servicing work or for a diagnosis and elimination of faults, can be effected only at a considerable expenditure. In most cases it is necessary to use external measuring instruments and this requires, inter alia, a demounting of the apparatus housing for an access to points of measurement. On the other hand, where an error code and status display is provided, the information which is furnished will not be adequate for a fast and reliable diagnosis, particularly in case of unusual faults.
For this reason it is an aim of the present invention to obviate the disadvantages set forth.
Accordingly, the present invention is directed to a control as set out in the opening paragrah of the present specification in which an input-enquiry control unit, comprising a keyboard and at least three-digit and preferably alphanumeric display means, is connected by control lines and data lines to the microcomputer, the keyboard comprises at least three keys, at least one of which is a selector key for switching from the display of actual operational data, such as the flow temperature or room temperature, during normal operation, to an inputting operation and/or to a servicing operation, and the remaining keys serve to change operational data during an inputting operation and for a setting of apparatus parameters, for example for fault diagnosis, or for a sampling of points of measurements, during a servicing operation.
Preferably, a read-only memory is provided, which is particularly programmable and erasable and which contains apparatus-specific limit data for fault detection, which data are compared in a time-division multiplex operation with actual operational state parameters, wherein a critical approach of the latter to the limit data in the read-only memory will result in a corresponding fault signal on the display means with priority over other displays.
For an emphasis of apparatus faults it is contemplated within the scope of the present invention that a flasher circuit is associated with multicolour- illuminating means, for the display means and with the selector key, said flasher circuit effecting an intermittent interruption of the power supply for the illumination during a servicing operation after an occurrence of an apparatus fault. 20 Further desirable features are set out in the dependent claims 4 to 10. It will be appreciated that the present invention permits a definite display of a multiplicity of operational states and a misinterpretation of operational data will be less likely because a separate code may be associated with each component of the apparatus and each point or measurement in the heating apparatus. In case of 2% a multidigit, alphanumeric display field it is possible to designate points of measurement and apparatus component even by plain text. In normal operation, the display field may indicate to the user, for example, actual states, such as room-temperature and liquid level in storage apparatus. After a switching to an inputting operation has been effected by means of the selector key, the user can actuate the remaining keys for setting or changing certain operational values and the corresponding values will be displayed in a clear and comprehensible manner on the display field.
A switching to a servicing operation will permit a person skilled in the art to enter into a detailed dialogue with the automatic control system and it will then be possible to sample and adjust particularly states of detailed components of the apparatus, for example those of the automatic fuel- firing means, the fan control, and the position of the exhaust gas damper, also to obtain readily actual and statistical data, such as the average igniting time, and the number of faults. A separate chimneysweep measuring operation, that is to say a prescribed check of certain operational states, can be performed in a simple manner. The error messages are specific so that a prolonged search for defects can be avoided.
An example of a control made in accordance with the present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the only Figure of which shows circuitry of the control diagrammatically.
Water-heating apparatus 1 comprises a heat source in the f orm of a gas burner 2, which is connected 5 to a gas line 3 by a valve 4 4 01. such as a solenoid valve, and with which a heat exchanger 8 is associated. The heat exchanger 8 is connected by a flow line 10 and a return line 9, which incorporates a circulating pump 11, to the heating circuit of circulating-water heater means.
The automatic control and control system of the waterheating apparatus 1 comprises as a central control unit a microcomputer 12, which has connected to it a flow temperature sensor 18, a flame monitor 71 with an associated flame probe 7, igniting means 5 for applying a high voltage to an igniting electrode 6, and an actuator 41 for the valve 4. Data lines 17 and control lines 16 lead from the microcomputer 12 to an input-enquiry control unit 13, which is provided with a key-board 14 and threedigit digital display means 15. The keyboard 14 consists of three keys 14f, 14", 14100. A selector key 141 serves to switch from the normal operation. The two remaining keys 1411, 14111 are provided for a change of operational data during an inputting operation and for a setting of apparatus parameters, for example for fault diagnosis, or for a sampling of points of measurement, during a servicing operation.
