Abstract

An ankle and leg support is composed of a single block of plastic foam 1 with a density such that, the weight of a human leg when resting in the shaped slots 2, it will not compress to more than a prescribed linear dimension thus keeping the heels above the surface of the mattress. The foam will be manufactured with a texture that, in its own right, is compatible with and will not chafe the human skin. The block will be of sufficient width and height to give it stability when inhabited by sometimes restless patients. An offset foam block support for a shorter left or right leg as shown in Figs 3 and 4 is made to adjustable dimensions. <IMAGE>

Description

ANKLE and LEG SUPPORTS FOR ORTHOPAEDIC PATIENTS This invention relates to a preformed plastic foam ankle and leg support block for orthopaedic patients lying in the prone position or sitting with legs stretched out.
Hospital patients, who have undergone orthopaedic surgery on legs, hips, or the pelvis for whatever reason, may be bed ridden for long periods during which time pressure sores can easily develop especially on the heel of the foot. These are painful, difficult to treat and protect, adding to the problems of mobility and ultimate recuperation.
At the moment no custom made former or support is in use which prevents the formation of pressure sores.
This design is composed of a single block of plastic foam with a density such that, the weight of a human leg when resting in the shaped slots, it will not compress to more than a prescribed linear dimension. Thus keeping the heels above the surface of the mattress. The foam will be manufactured with a texture that, in its own right, is compatible with and will not chafe the human skin surrounding the achilles tendon at the heel and the skin around the ankle.
The block will be of sufficient width and height to give it stability when placed on a hospital bed, under bed-clothes, and inhabited by sometimes restless patients.
A specific description of the invention with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows in elevation a plastic foam block with shaped ankle guide slots.
Figure 2 shows in elevation a plastic foam block with angled slots.
Figure 3 shows in plan view a foam block with an offset for the left leg.
Figure 4 shows in plan view a foam block with an offset for the right leg.
With reference to the drawing block 1 is composed of a plastic foam which has two slots in which the patients ankles are placed.
The slots areradiused 2 and angled to ensure the correct anatomical posture of the feet.
The width 3 of each block is sufficient to provide stability when inhabited.
Figure 1 shows slots which give more regulation to the foot posture 4 for necessary surgical cases; while Figure 2 allows a greater degree of movement 5 for those cases not requiring such a regimen.
Figure 3 shows an offset support block where the left leg is shorter than the right. Dimensions of offset are adjustable.
Figure 4 shows an offset support block where the right leg is shorter than the left. Dimensions of offset are adjustable.

Claims (5)

1. A preformed plastic foam ankle and leg support block for orthopaedic patients with radiused and variously angled slots to suit the different needs of surgical cases.
2. A preformed plastic foam ankle and leg support block as claimed in claim 1 but with an offset to give support to the left leg which is shorter than the rights. Dimensions adjustable.
3. A preformed plastic foam ankle and leg support block as claimed in claim 1 but with an offset to give support to the right leg which is shorter than the left. Dimensions adjustable.
4. All dimensions angles and radii may be changed as claimed in claim 1 to suit the needs of individual orthopaedic patients, but without altering the principle.
5. A preformed plastic foam ankle and leg support block substantially as described herein with reference to figures 1 to 4 of the occompanying drawing.
