Abstract

A device 1 for securing a carpet edge 2 adjacent a wall, comprises a housing 4 adapted for lying substantially parallel to the wall 3 and for receiving the free edge 2 of the carpet 5 and a gripper 6 adapted to lie substantially parallel to a floor 7 and to grip part of the carpet 5 inboard of the free edge 2 thereof. The device 1 is made in one piece as for example from plastic, metal or metal coated with plastic, and in any suitable or desired colour. <IMAGE>

Description

A CARPET SECURING DEVICE The invention relates to a carpet securing device.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a device for securing a carpet edge adjacent a wall, comprising a housing adapted for lying substantially parallel to the wall and for receiving a free edge of the carpet and a gripper adapted to lie substantially parallel to a floor and to grip part of a carpet inboard of the free edge thereof.
There may be an abutment against which an underlay may abut in use.
The abutment may form a wall part which extends from the gripper to a foot of the device which in use is adapted to rest on the floor.
The device may be formed in one piece of plastic, metal, metal coated with plastic, or any other suitable material.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a method of securing a carpet edge adjacent a wall, comprising providing a device as hereinbefore defined securing that device to a floor adjacent a wall, and feeding an edge of a carpet into the housing so that it is retained therein, and gripped by the gripper.
A device embodying the invention is hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a device according to the invention, in use, in perspective, and securing a carpet adjacent a skirting board.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a device 1 for securing a carpet edge 2 adjacent a wall, comprising a housing 4 adapted for lying substantially parallel to the wall 3 and for receiving the free edge 2 of the carpet 5 and a gripper 6 adapted to lie substantially parallel to a floor 7 and to grip part of the carpet 5 inboard of the free edge 2 thereof.
The device 1 is made in one piece as for example from plastic, metal or metal coated with plastic, and in any suitable or desired colour.
The housing 4 comprises a wall 8 upstanding, at substantially 900 in the embodiment, fran the gripper 6 and continuing into a convex part 9 which terminates in a free edge 10 lying in a plane substantially parallel to the plane of the gripper 6, and spaced from the wall 8 a distance just sufficient to receive the free edge 2 of the carpet 5. The gripper 6 has gripping means in the form of upstanding teeth 11 which in the case of a metal device 1 may be punched out of the device, for biting into the underside, in use, of the carpet 5 adjacent the free edge in the housing 4.
The gripper 6 is in use spaced above the floor, being supported in this position by a wall 12, substantially parallel to the wall 8, which leads to a foot 13 which extends under the gripper 6 in use and is substantially parallel thereto, the foot terminating substantially in a plane in which the wall 8 lies.
The wall 12 is of a height which is equivalent to the thickness of an underlay 14 for the carpet, the wall 12 forming an abutment against which the underlay 14 can butt as shown.
In use of the device 1, it is positioned against the skirting board 15 of the wall 3, the wall 8 lying against that board 15, and is secured to the floor 7 by securing means such as screws or nails passing through holes 16 formed in the gripper 6 and foot 13.
The underlay 14 is then laid, butting up against the wall 12. The free edge 2 of the carpet 5 is then fed into the housing 4 by manipulation and a part of the carpet inboard of the free edge is pressed down and pulled gently away from the wall 8 so that the teeth 11 of the gripper 6 bite into it and secure it in position.
The carpet 5 is then laid out across the floor 7, the device 1 providing a secure fixing so that a smooth expanse can be obtained prior to the opposite free edge being secured in a similar device.
The edges at 900, if it is a fitted carpet are secured on a similar way in similar devices.
The teeth 11 are angled towards the wall 8 to provide a secure fixing so that when the carpet is "smoothed out" away from the wall 3, the carpet is gripped, but can be smoothed taut to provide an even laying. The housing 4 enables this to be carried out too, as it has a sufficient volume inside the convex part 9 to allow more or less carpet to be fed into it to provide the necessary adjustment during laying. The free edge 10 grips the carpet too, to hold it in the housing, the convex part 9 being resilient to achieve this.

Claims (9)

1. A device for securing a carpet edge adjacent a wall, comprising a housing adapted for lying substantially parallel to the wall and for receiving a free edge of the carpet and a gripper adapted to lie substantially parallel to a floor and to grip part of a carpet inboard of the free edge thereof.
2. A device according to Claim 1, including an abutment against which an underlay abuts in use.
3. A device according to Claim 2, the abutment forming a wall part of which in use is adapted to rest on the floor.
4. A device according to any preceding Claim, formed in one piece.
5. A device according to Claim 4, the device comprising plastic, metal, metal coated with plastic, or any other suitable material.
6. A device according to any preceding Claim, the gripper comprising a foot for resting on the floor, a part substantially parallel therewith including upstanding teeth for gripping the carpet.
7. A device according to any preceding Claim, the housing being convex in use into the room.
8. A device substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
9. A method of securing a carpet edge adjacent a wall, comprising providing a device according to any preceding Claim, securing that device to a floor adjacent a wall, and feeding an edge of a carpet into the housing so that it is retained therein, and gripped by the gripper.
