Abstract

A one piece plastics moulded hinge mechanism suitable for use in a restraining clip for electric cables comprises a pivot member 9 and a pair of hook members 10 which clip over the pivot member to hold the clip in its closed position. An interconnection arrangement 3, 4 permits locking of the hinge in the closed position by overcentring the connection therebetween. <IMAGE>

Description

Hinge Mechanism The present invention relates to a hinge mechanism, in particular to such a mechanism in the form of a plastics moulding and more particularly but not exclusively to a clip incorporating such a mechanism.

In many environments such as in laboratories, exhibition centres, offices and similar environments it is often desirable to hold communications and other distribution cables in a semi permanent manner. For example on reconfigurable exhibition stands electrical cables for lighting and power points need to be provided for a few days during one exhibition and, when the stands are used at a subsequent exhibition a revised lighting or power plan may be required.

In laboratories environments where "bread board" circuit design is practised then interconnection between circuits by wire or optical fibre often results in a loose tangle of interconnecting flexible leads since the alternatives of either providing "permanent" location of the interconnections using staples or permanently located loops through which leads must be threaded required excessive effort or time to be spent by the circuit designer. Temporary arrangements such as locating flexibles with adhesive tape for example may result in leads being snagged accidentally and in the case of fragile media such as optical fibre may result in damage to the threads.

Accordingly it has been proposed that releasable clips may be used to provide semi-permanent location of flexibles.

One of the problems of providing such clips is the provision of a suitable hinge and locking arrangement at an economic cost.

Accordingly it is one object of the present invention to provide a hinge mechanism which may be incorporated in a clip of the kind referred to above and which is relatively inexpensive to produce. According to the present invention there is provided a hinge mechanism of moulded plastics material comprising a first member including a pivot arm and a second member including a hook arrangement, the hook arrangement being arranged on assembly of the mechanism to flex to pass over the pivot arm, the mechanism including means to inhibit subsequent separation of the hook and the pivot arm.

Preferably the hinge arrangement comprises a one piece plastics moulding having a substantially planar member interconnecting the first and second members.

The planar member may comprise two portions having a reduced section between them whereby an overlocking action may be used to lock the hinge in its closed position. One of the two portions may include a key shaped member to facilitate locking and release of the mechanism.

According to a feature of the invention there is provided a clip of moulded plastics material comprising a first platform and a second platform, the first platform including a pivot arm and the second platform including a hook arrangement, the pivot arm and the hook arrangement being arranged on assembly of the mechanism to form a hinge in accordance with any one of claim 1 to 6.

One or both platforms may include one or more channels to facilitate location of flexible leads with respect to the clip and means may be provided to facilitate attachment of the clip to a surface.

Clips in accordance with the feature and incorporating a hinge in accordance with the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings of which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a clip prior to assembly.

Figure 2 is a side view of the clip of Figure 1, Figure 3 is a reverse plan view of the clip of Figure 1, Figure 4 is a section through the hinge arrangement of the clip of Figure 1 after assembly, Figure 5A show the clip of Figure 1 after assembly in to 5C respectively open, closed and locked positions, and Figure 6A shows exemplary adaptations of the clip of figure 1 to 6E for use in locating specific articles.

Referring first to figures 1 to 3, the clip is adapted for manufacture as a one piece moulding of a plastics material such as polypropylene for example. After assembly, the interior of the clip comprises two platforms 1 & 2 the surfaces of which meet to grip articles inserted between them.

The platforms 1 & 2 are interconnected by two planar members 3, 4 each interconnection comprising a reduced section 5, 6, 7 of the plastics material. One of the planar a members 4 has a spigot 8 integrally moulded therewith the function of which is hereinafter described.

The hinge of the clip comprises a pivot member 9,9' and a hook arrangement 10,10' which, referring also to Figure 4, on assembly when the clip is folded so that the platforms 1, 2 meet, pushing the platform 2 from the distal end causes the hook 10 to flex with the resilience of the material allowing three support pieces 11 to ride down a ramp 12 and forcing the pivot member 9 into a recess 14 of the hook 10. The hinge mechanism thus assembled is restrained from separating by the shaping of the hook 9, interaction between the edge of the support pieces 11 and the ramp 12 and the holding effect of the planar link 3, 4.

The clip is now ready for use and referring to Figure 5, in Figure 5A the clip is shown in an open position ready for insertion of a flexible lead, for example an optical fibre to be inserted between the jaws formed by the platforms 1, 2. Once the item to be located has been inserted, the jaws of the clip may be closed together as shown in Figure 5B. It will be appreciated that moving the clip between the positions shown in Figures 5A and B is simply a push-pull action.

However, if it is desired to inhibit the opening of the clip then causing the members 3, 4 to overcentre as shown in figure 5C presents accidental opening of the jaws. To facilitate movement of the members 3, 4 between the locked position (Figure 5C) and the free position (Figure SB) the member 3 has an extended spigot 8.

It will be noted that the jaw formed by the platform 2 has a longitudinal extension 15 integrally moulded with it to facilitate opening. The platform 2 has a lateral extension 16 (as shown in figure 1) which may be used either to hold loose clips whilst opening or to include (eg) apertures for screw fixing of the clip to a surface.

As an alternative to screw fixing the outside of the platform 1 may carry an adhesive pad (not shown).

In the form thus a discussed, the clip has been found suitable for locating optical fibres (which have a very small diameter). However, the clip may be readily modified for other purposes examples of which are shown in figure 6.

For example in Figure 6A the platforms 1 & 2 each include part of a circular aperture which may accommodate a co-axial type cable. Figure 68 shows a modification of the platform 2 in which several channels for locating (eg) several bell wires are provided.

Figures 6C and 6D respectively show modifications of the platform 2 to carry a typical flat "twin and earth" mains electricity cable and a plurality of single heavy duty conductors.

The modification show in figure 6E in which the platform 2 has a ridged surface is particularly suited to utilisation of the clip for holding paper or similar planar items in position on a desk or hanging on a wall or notice board.

Other modifications to the clip for uses such as with "microbore" piping for example will be readily apparent without affecting the basic manufacture of the one-piece plastics moulding.

Claims (12)

1. A hinge mechanism of moulded plastics material comprising a first member including a pivot arm and a second member including a hook arrangement, the hook arrangement being arranged on assembly of the mechanism to flex to pass over the pivot arm, the mechanism including means to inhibit subsequent separation of the hook and the pivot arm.
2. A hinge mechanism according to claim 1 wherein the means to inhibit separation comprises a substantially planar member interconnecting the first and second members
3. A hinge mechanism according to claim 2 wherein the planar member comprises first and second portions having a reduced section therebetween whereby an overcentring action may effect locking of the mechanism in a closed position of the hinge.
4. A hinge mechanism according to claim 3 wherein one of the portions comprises an extended spigot to facilitate locking and unlocking of the hinge.
5. A hinge mechanism according to any preceding claim wherein the pivot member is partioned along its length and a plurality of hook members each cooperating with a respective portion of the pivot member are provided.
6. A hinge mechanism according to any one of claims 2 to 5 manufactured as a one-piece plastics moulding.
7. A clip of moulded plastics material comprising a first platform and a second platform, the first platform including a pivot arm and the second platform including a hook arrangement, the pivot arm and the hook arrangement being arranged on assembly of the mechanism to form a hinge in accordance with any one of claim 1 to 6.
8. A clip according to claim 7 wherein at least one of the platforms includes at least one channel arranged to locate at least one flexible lead.
9. A clip according to claim 9 wherein at least one of the platforms has a roughened surface whereby friction between the surface and planar articles inserted in the clip is enhanced.
10. A clip according to any one of claims 7 to 9 wherein one of the platforms includes mounting means arranged to facilitate attachment of the clip to a surface.
11. A clip according to any one of claims 7 to 10 wherein one of the platforms has at least one lateral extension arranged to provide a finger grip to facilitate opening of the clip.
12. A clip substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figures 1 to 5 of the accompanying drawings.
