Abstract

Electrodes; connections; diaphragms; oxygen and hydrogen, obtaining.-Apparatus for the electrolysis of water comprises electrodes which are formed by series of horizontal louvre-like strips, are separated by diaphragms, and are arranged closely adjacent so that the gases generated are conducted within the electrodes. Electric connection to alternate electrodes is made at the top and at the bottom respectively, to equalize the potential differences at different points. The louvre strips, not shown in detail, may be soldered to vertical tubes 1, one or more tubes being provided for each electrode. In the electrodes A of one polarity, conductors 5 are connected to the upper ends of the tubes. In the remaining electrodes B, each tube may be connected at its lower end to a conductor 4, which passes up through a lining of asbestos or the like within the tube. Alternatively, conductors for the second set of electrodes B pass through the bottom of the tank, from which they may be insulated or not; in the latter case, a porous diaphragm forms a lining for the tank. Narrow bells 6, preferably non-conducting, collect the gases from the electrodes A, B.
