Abstract

An arm sling has a waistband 10 and an arm loop 11 which enables the weight of the arm to be distributed over the shoulders and onto the waist, promoting comfort of wear. The arm loop can be passed through the waistband in order to hold the supported arm close to the body, if required. The waistband is fastened with Velcro strips 15 enabling the sling to be put on and taken off with ease, by the wearer without assistance. <IMAGE>

Description

ARM SLING WITH WAISTBAND This invention relates to an arm sling with waistband.
Presently, conventional slings made to support the arm (such as the triangular sling and the collar-and-cuff sling) do so by taking the weight of the arm on the wearer's neck. This can cause discomfort. In addition, the triangular sling (which is perhaps the commonest form of sling currently in use) requires assistance to put it on.
According to the present invention there is a waistband which takes the greater part of the weight of the arm. Attached to the back of the waistband is an arm loop, which passes over the wearer's neck to support the arm. Both the waistband and the arm loop are made from strips of a thick strong well-edged material such as petersham. The width of material used should be about 7 or scum. The waistband necessary to fit an average-sized adult is about one metre in length, and is fastened at the front by a 15 cm strip of Velcro. This enables the waistband to be adjusted. The material for the arm loop is about two metres in length.
The accompanying drawings depict the formation of the sling and the method of wear.
Figure 1 shows the sling in plan.
Figure 2 shows the appearance of the sling as worn by a person suffering from a swollen arm, as seen from the front.
Figure 3 shows the appearance of the sling as worn by a person suffering from a swollen arm, as seen from the rear.
The dotted lines marked on the sling in Figures 1 and 3 show the areas where stitching is required in order to attach the waistband 10 to the arm loop 11 (12 & 13), and to stabilise the arm loop at the back (14). The Velcro strip 15 attaches to its companion strip 16 in order to fasten the waistband at the front of the body. The Velcro strips are sewn to opposing ends of the waistband, one to the "top" side, and the other to the "bottom" side. If required, a small piece of sheepskin or foam may be sewn to the inside of the arm loop in order to give the arm additional protection. All the stitching, and most particularly that securing the waistband to the arm loop, should be made with strong tightly-sewn thread.
If it is deemed necessary to maintain the supported arm close to the body, it is possible with this sling to pass the waistband through the arm loop at the front. No additional ties are required.
