Abstract

The invention provides an incontinence pant or pad of substantially butterfly shape but with one wing of the butterfly smaller than the other so that the pant or pad, when used for male use, may be used with a larger wing of the butterfly at the front of the person, and when used for female use may be used with the larger wing of the butterfly towards the rear of the person. <IMAGE>

Description

INCONTINENCE PAD This invention relates to incontinence pads. Such pads are well known and used but most pads currently on the market are not designed for male and/or female use. An object of the present invention is to provide an incontinence pad, which, by virtue of its shape, can be used equally for male use or for female use.
According to the invention an incontinence pad is of substantially butterfly shape but with one wing of the butterfly smaller than the other so that the pad, -: when used for male use, may be used with the larger wing of the butterfly at the front of the person and when used for female use may be used with the larger wing of the butterfly towards the rear of the person.
Preferably the area of the larger wing is between 1.25 and 3 times the area of the smaller wing and more preferably 1.75 to 2 times. Each wing is preferably of trapezium shape with the narrower parallel edges of the two trapeziums adjacent each other.
The pad is preferably a reusable pad i.e. one which is washable. The pad may comprise an outer waterimpermeable layer, a packing of water absorbant material, the material being washable, and a second outer layer of water-permeable material. The inner and outer layers are preferably joined around their peripheries thus trapping the absorbant material within the two layers.
The incontinence pad may be attached to the wearer by any of the known means such as tapes, velco strips, etc.
In the accompanying Drawings: Figure 1 is a plan of an incontinence pad opened up into a flat position, being partly broken away to illustrate the various layers which form the pad.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2--2 on an enlarged scale showing the three layers which together make up the pad.
It will be seen that in Figure 1 the incontinence pad is of substantially butterfly shape with one wing 10 of the butterfly smaller than the other wing 11.
Each of the wings is effectively of trapezium shape and the wing 11 is of the order of 1.8 times the area of the wing 10.
The two trapeziums meet on the line 2--2 with their narrower parallel sides adjacent.
The pad comprises three layers, an outer waterimpermeable layer 12, an inner packing of water absorbant material 13 and a second outer layer 14 of water-permeable material. The layers 12 and 14 are adjoined around their peripheries 15, 16, 17 and 18 by stitching.
Tapes 17 may be provided to attach the pad to the wearer.
The waterproof layer may be a plastic coated fabric, the absorbant inner pad may comprise a mixture of rayon/ viscose and cotton or polymer and the second outer layer may be a knitted polyester layer. In use the knitted polyester layer goes nearest to the body.
When used by men the larger trapezoidal part 11 is placed at the front of the body whereas when used by women the smaller trapezoidal part 10 is placed at the front.
Thus this pad is suitable for both sexes. In the particular version of the pad as shown in the Drawings, the appropriate dimensions are: Width at 15 10+" (26.67 cms) Width at line 2--2 5" (12.7 cm) Width at line 17 14+" (36.83 cms) Distance from line 15 to line 2--2 6+" (16.51 cms) Distance from line 17 to line 2--2 13+" (34.29 cms) With these dimensions the area of the larger trapezium is 1.8 times the area of the smaller trapezium.
The absorbant pad could be in the form of two or three or more layers of absorbant material so that the total number of layers is not limited to three.
The absorbant pad could include other materials such as polyesters etc.
The pad may be used, for example, with stretch pants.
Although tapes are shown for fastening the pad , apreferred alternative is to use an elastic ' velcro' fastener.
