Abstract

A gasketed structure for a front opening of a cooker oven comprises an inner member (8) and an outer frame (22) bounding the opening with surfaces of the inner member and outer frame extending behind the opening to define a slit. A widened region of the slit is defined by a portion of the inner surface of the frame member (22) that is offset outwardly of the opening and that is formed to define a concealed slot to which the slit leads. A flanged clip (45) bits into the widened region by insertion of a tongue (49) thereof into the slit and rotation of the clip (45) towards the opening until a web-portion of the clip registers with an outwardly offset portion of the frame member (22). The tongue (49) has then entered the slot and a flange (47), which faces in the same direction as the tongue (49), registers with an exposed face of the outer frame (22). A gasket (51) has a body, portions of which define a longitudinal slit (62) opening to an intended inner face, and has a leg (50) depending from the body. The clip flange (47) enters the slit (62) so that the leg (50) is drawn into the slit between the inner member (8) and the outer frame (22) as the clip (45) is rotated home. The widened regions and clips (45) may occur at radiused corners of a generally rectangular oven opening. <IMAGE>

Description

GASKET WED STRUCTURE This invention relates to a gasketed structure for an Opening, more particularly (though not exclusively) an oven opening of a cooker to be closed in face to face contact by a door.
The conventional way of providing a gasket for an oven cavity is to employ strips of silicone rubber in tension that meet at mitred-corners and are held to a surrounding frame by clips or other suitable means.
There is a need for a single gasket structure that can be attached around the opening of an oven cavity without unacceptable distortion at the corners and that can be easily removed for servicing or customer cleaning.
Broadly stated the invention provides a gasketed structure for an opening comprising an inner member and an outer frame bounding the opening with surfaces of said inner member and outer frame extending behind the opening to define a slit, said slit having a widened region defined by a portion of an inner surface of the frame member that is offset outwardly of the opening and that is formed to define a concealed slot to which the slit leads; a flanged clip that fits into the widened region by insertion of a tongue thereof into the slit and rotation of the clip towards the opening until a web portion of the clip registers with the outwardly offset portion of the frame member, the tongue has entered the slot and the flange which faces in the same direction as the tongue registers with an exposed face of the outer frame, and a gasket having a body, portions of which define a longitudinal slit opening to an intended inner face and having a leg depending from the body, the clip flange being engaged into the gasket slit so that the leg is drawn into the slit between the inner member and the outer frame as the clip is rotated home.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a fragmentary exploded view of a corner portion of an oven and front frame adapted by fitting of a seal according to the invention, the vlew being taken from the blind face; Figure 2 is a view of the oven from the visible face before fitting the seal; Figure 3 is a sectional view of a gasket; Figures 4 and 5 are plan and side views of a retaining cllp for the gasket; and Figure 6 is a section of the corner region of the oven with the gasket in place.
In the drawings, an oven for an electrically heated cooker has a continuous lining 8 defining an oven roof 12, side walls 10 and floor 1 4, each meeting at a radiused corner 16. The front edge 9 of the lining is reverse folded and then out-turned to define a flange 18 that is formed with slots 20 and that behind the corner 16 is formed with a cut-away region 20 of reduced width. The flange 18 is located a short distanc, conveniently about 1 cm., behind the lining front edge. The lining 8 fits into a front frame 22 that is generally of rearwardly facing channel section with its inner limb 24 formed with apertured lugs 26 that pass through the slots 20 of the lining 8.The inner limb 24 sits on the front face of flange 18 and the frame 22 is attached to the lining 8 by resilient clips 30 of C-profile whose lower limbs 32 are slotted to pass onto the -lugs 26 and rest on the blind face of flange 18 whilst their upper limbs have catch tongues 34 that fit into slots 36 in the lugs 26. As best seen in Figures 2 and 6 there is a small slit 38 between the reverse folded front edge 9 of the lining 8 and the limb 24 that defines an inner wedge to the frame 22. In the corners 16 the flange 24 is offset in a diagonally outwards direction without increasing the radius beyond that which would have been'required in the absense of the offset to follow the front edge 9 at the spacing of gap 38.Thus the corners of the frame 22 when viewed from the front have radiused regions 40 each defined by curved regions of angular extent slightly above 900 and each defining increased width regions 42 of the slit 38. The radiused region 40 of the inner limb 34 is of reduced depth and defines with the cut-away region 20 of flange 18 a narrow slot leading from the slot 38 to the concealed.
face of the frame 22.
In Figures 4 and 5 a retaining clip 45 is radiused when viewed in plan to fit into theregions 42 and to be retained behind the frame 22. It has an angular extent of about 800. In profile it has an out-turned top flange 47 and an out-turned tongue 49 at its base. It can be dropped into position-between the region 40 of the frame 22 and the front edge 9 of the lining 8 by inserting the tongue 40 into the region 49 and rotating the clip 45 inwardly to engage the tongue 49 into the slot between regions 20, 40.
A gasket 51 of silicone rubber or other resilient heat-resistant material comprises a leg 50 that fits into the slit 38, 42, a body region 52 and a head 54 of tubular section. The leg 50 is formed with basally facing angled ribs 56 that in use cooperate with the sides of the groove 38 to form a seal and resist withdrawal from the groove. Its basal end leads to an out-turned flange 58 that seals against the visible face of the frame 22 and forms part of the body region 52. The tip of the flange 58 carries a retroverted flange 60 with an inwardly facing slot 62 defined between the flanges 58, 60. The head 54 is formed integrally with the flange 60 and has an internal rib 64 to prevent it from being completely collapsed when the oven door is closed. The gasket 51 may be assembled to the front of the oven from its visible face by firstly inserting the flange 47 of clip 45 into the slot 62 with the tongue 49 protruding below the leg 50, after which the tongue 49 is inserted into the region 2, and the clip 45 is rotated home to the locking position previously described, the leg 50 being carried into the region 42. The leg 50 may then be pushed home along the slit 38 between the corners 16, the gasket 51 being under slight tension. The retroverted flange 60 rests on the front edge 9 of the lining 8 which stands slightly proud of the face of frame 22. If additional clips are needed between the corners 16, straight clips like the clips 45 may be provided and fit into similar enlarged base-slotted regions of the slit 38. Such additional clips, however, are not needed for most of the structures of the invention.
